About Jim Massey
My name is Jim Massey. I am a Civil Engineer, General Contractor, and Real Estate Broker, born in Winston-Salem. I came to Roaring Gap in 1965 where I met and married my wife, Nancy. She is a registered nurse with a specialty in surgery in Elkin and my partner in the real estate and construction business. WE WILL NEGOITATE OUR RATES BASED ON NUMBER OF NIGHTS AND NUMBER OF PEOPLE STAYING. WE WILL ALSO TALK TO YOU ABOUT YOUR BRINGING A PET.
Jim Massey purchased this Chalet in 1998
Why Jim Massey chose Roaring Gap
My company designed and built this house at about half its present size in 1966 for a couple from Winston-Salem. Years later we built them a bigger home two houses up the street, and sold this house to a couple from Florida. When it became available again in 1998, Nancy and I bought it because all the really good view lots had been built on and we had always dreamed of living on one of the spectacular view properties on Ridge Road. We gutted it down to the bare framing, doubled its size and built it all over again, finishing in 2000. We lived here for 10 years and then moved into a new home across the street in Olde Beau. Ultravista is presently for sale, but will not be shown when there is a guest in the house. LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR HOME BY VIEWING OUR MORE THAN 50 FIVE STAR REVIEWS!
What makes this Chalet unique
Having designed and built almost all the view homes on Ridge Road, Nancy and I knew that the view was good, but didn't know it was spectacular until we lived there. I didn't know that sunrises sometimes are as beautiful as the best sunset. Also, I had no idea that a full moon could be so brilliantly exciting. Watching lightning storms in the valley from up here is really special. So are fireworks in valley communities on July 4th. When the fog is lying in the valley, the mountain tops look like islands in a cotton sea. And every night when the lights come on down below, called 'valley stars' by locals, it looks like a large city. The view is different every day.

Our family calls this "The Big House". We love coming to Roaring Gap!
Our family is growing so we needed the 4 master suites! The kitchen is very well equipped with a brand new refrigerator and gas range. utensils, bowls and baking dishes. It's wonderful to have 2 ovens and the pantry is generously stocked! We used the grill twice and the dining room was able to seat all 14 of us! The view off the many balconies and decks is spectacular no matter the time of day! It's a very special place for our family and holds many wonderful memories! Highly recommend! Thank you for your hospitality! :-)
Thank you, Criss, for coming again to our home atop Roaring Gap Mountain, and celebrating your family Thanksgiving here! It was great to see all of you again. My best to you, and hope to see you again next year..........Jim
Great Time at a Beautiful Location
Family reunion for parents' 65th wedding anniversary. Beautiful views and terrific home in a lovely neighborhood made it a memorable event for everyone. Lots of space to gather and enjoy each other's company - spacious great room, dining room, and decks. Plenty of bedrooms (6) and bathrooms (5 .5) for some privacy, too. Beautifully decorated. Well-stocked kitchen (pots, pans, plates, glasses, utensils) and pantry (lots of the basics like coffee, cooking oil, sugar). Fixed most of our own meals on the gas range and oven, and used both the gas grill and the charcoal grill outdoors. (Over the 4 days we were there, we were able to cook ribs, steak, eggs, sausage, bacon, hash browns, French toast, and even waffles - there's an electric waffle maker in the kitchen.) A bonus to be able to eat delicious food at the Hummingbird Grille at the Highland Meadows Golf Club (less than a mile from the house). Everyone we spoke with in the clubhouse was pleasant and friendly. The Pro Stop (a little over a mile from the house) has a small grocery store that was sufficient for most of our needs, and Elkin (about 20 miles south) has several grocery stores (as well as the Angry Troll Brewing Company brewpub and restaurant). Jones von Drehle vineyard and winery is about 8 miles from the house, and Stone Mountain State Park, with hiking trails, is about 6 miles. So much to do during the day, and a beautiful house to relax in when not out running around.
Thank you so much, John, for your very complimentary review of our home on top of the mountain at Roaring Gap, NC. Our family enjoyed living there for many years, especially the panoramic mountain and valley views which are constantly changing. I enjoyed meeting you and your family, and sincerely hope you can come back to see us again. Sincerely, Jim
Ultravista has ultra views! And so much more.
Jim Massey is an excellent host, and rightfully proud of his Ultravista mountain home. We were a family gathering of 14 and really enjoyed our time there. It is a large house with bedrooms at opposite ends for some privacy and quiet as needed. Everything was tastefully decorated, and Mr. Massey thought of all the amenities visitors might like. We used the club pool as well as visited Stone Mountain State Park and some other local areas. One of our greatest pleasures was sitting on the deck overlooking the view and catching up with relatives. We had a great time.
Thank you so much! It is always nice to hear that other families enjoyed staying in the place we called home for so many years. It is a big house that we try to keep clean and up to date so that all who come can experience the comfort of the place and the awesome views of the valley and mountains. My best to you......Jim
It was a lucky find
Five years ago! We have enjoyed UltraVista with each and every visit. There is always something new to go with the already substantial offerings of this great rental house. Because the weather did not cooperate for our usual deck sitting, we discovered cornhole in the garage! A great place to enjoy the rain under cover and fresh air. Thank you, Jim, for your continued hospitality. God willing, we will see you again next year! We always have such a good time.
Thank you, Lynny, for your gracious comments about our home on Roaring Gap mountain. We try to make improvements to our place to keep it up to date, and Nancy and I spend a week or so there every chance we get. We lived there for years, and, like you and your group, love going back to relax and to see the incredible mountain views and sunsets. See you next year!.......Jim
Great getaway for a big family
Our whole extended family of 16 had a great week here! Tons of space and a unique layout on 3 floors made it comfortable for several families to share the house enjoyably. Standout features include an incredible panoramic view of the mountains (especially from one of several outdoor tables on the deck), finished garage-turned game room, close proximity to the state park where we spent every single day hiking and swimming in waterfalls and the cutest "hidden" playroom for small children I've ever seen. Thanks for a great week!
Thank you so much for your kind review. I am glad you and your family enjoyed our big house where my family lived for many years. We always enjoy going to the close by Stone Mountain State Park, the Blue Ridge Parkway, and the many other interesting things to see and do. I am pleased also that you appreciate the very special valley and mountain range view that is different every day. I hope you all can come back soon............Jim
No one wanted to leave
I've had the pleasure of staying in this wonderful home with a large group of my girlfriends. As a group, we've visited many vacation homes but have NEVER returned to the same one. But when we stayed here, every single guest said we were coming back, and we did. it's now an annual joy. This time I got to bring my family, and every day someone said 'I wish we never had to leave.' This home is an oasis of peace and loveliness. The view is extraordinary. The true gift is arriving to a warm welcome and not having to worry about bedding or snacks or trash bags or coffee...it's all there! Easiest and most delightful trip imaginable. You will never want to leave :)
Thank you so very much for your generous review. I appreciate getting to meet your family and friends, and look forward to seeing you again soon. Best to you, Jim
This cusom designed and built home, ULTRAVISTA, is located in High Meadows Development, home of the private High Meadows Golf and Country Club. Because the owner is a member, house guests can play golf most weekdays. The course is a meticulously maintained layout designed by the well known architect George Cobb. For more golf, guests may play across the street at Olde Beau Golf Club, which Curtis Strange called 'one of the greatest mountain golf courses ever built'. There are 2 more 18 hole courses within a 20 minute drive.
3 miles from High Meadows is the center of the famous 469 mile long Blue Ridge Parkway. The parkway provides sightseeing, hiking, bicycling, restaurants, and pleasurable driving to many points of interests.
4 miles from High Meadows is the entry to the 14,000 acre Stone Mountain State Park. Bring your camera, because there is a lot to see and do - scenic walking trails, flora & fauna, waterfalls, horse trails, camping, trout fishing, picnicking, rock climbing and much more. Here in Alleghany County is the developing New River State Park (New River is the second oldest river in the world) for camping, tubing, hiking, picnicking, etc.
11 miles north is Sparta, NC, our county seat and a great small town to visit. Nestled between the local mountains, you will find our Court House, Alleghany Memorial Hospital, Farmer's Hardware, many restaurants, delis, and coffee shops, museum, arts and craft stores, wonderful local pottery, artists, campgrounds, fitness center, antiques & collectibles, grocery stores, pet care, river recreation, sporting goods, winery, etc.
Vineyards and wine making comprise a huge industry in our area. Many wineries are within a 30 minute drive from ULTRAVISTA with tours, tasting, restaurants, and award winning wines.
