Orchid Knoll sits in a dramatic location on the ridge of St John's highest mountain, Bordeaux Mountain. The 1200+ foot elevation offers fabulous 320-degree views, plus excellent (clothing optional) privacy and tranquility. Although Bordeaux is slowly being developed, it is still a pristine, peaceful neighborhood that offers unspoiled tropical beauty and serenity. The house itself was designed to capture the spectacular beauty of its surroundings, with views that include St Croix to the south, St Thomas (west), Jost Van Dyke (north), Tortola, (northeast) and Virgin Gorda in the east. This is one of the most panoramic views on St. John, and it's really spectacular. It's a 20-25 minute drive into Cruz Bay, 10-15 minutes into the smaller town of Coral Bay and a 10-15 minute drive to the National park beaches.
Orchid is a romantic and comfy 2-bedroom, 2.5 bath home that was built in 1997 from hand cut native stone and wood. This is a 2-level house, with the master bedroom, great room (living, dining, kitchen areas) and covered porch on the upper level, and the guest bedroom, pool and sundeck on the lower level. The attractive interior reflects the casual elegance of an upscale French country villa, with arched French doors and windows, beamed cathedral ceilings, terra cotta tiled floors and pleasing furnishings, antiques and accessories. A large wrap around covered porch runs the length of the great room and serves as an outdoor living/dining area, and is a perfect spot for reading, relaxing and enjoying the fiery sunsets over St Thomas, while sun worshipers will love the south facing pool and sundeck on the lower level.
There are two bedrooms, with the cozy master bedroom (queen), located on the upper level, and including air conditioning, a walk in closet and a tiled bath. The master bedroom faces east with excellent down island views of Tortola and the BVIs. It opens to a small deck through screened sliding glass doors. The master also contains a desk and an upholstered chair for late night reading or writing. On the pool deck level, the guest bedroom (2 twins or king) also has a/c, a tiled bath and faces east to capture the first rays of the rising sun.
Exquisite hand rubbed French doors, white cathedral ceilings, and tiled floors define the ample great room. A wrought iron couch with upholstered sofa cushions, 2 easy chairs and an eclectic blend of selected furnishings and accessories create a personable living room. If you need additional warmth, which is not likely, one of the centerpieces of the living room is a working fireplace. A 32' flat screen TV/DVD and an iSymphony FM stereo with CD, iPod and memory card slots are also provided, as well as wireless Internet
The kitchen is well equipped and includes a 4-burner stove and oven, dishwasher, microwave, blender, coffee maker, toaster and a fine selection of dinnerware, cookware, and server ware. A washer/dryer is also provided.
You may dine inside at the formal dining room table seating 6-8 or take advantage of the superb views on the tiled upper deck at the table seating four.
If you have a sense of adventure and a desire to get away from it all, and if you long to try something a little bit off the beaten path, then Orchid Knoll will reward you. If you worship the quiet splendors of nature, dazzling sunrises and sunsets and nights meant for stargazing, but also want a modern and comfortable home, you'll love this villa. Our very private and romantic mountain top villa is ideal for honeymooners and other lovers, and also for adventuresome families, tan all over sun worshipers, or anyone seeking undisturbed peace and quiet.
We’re a family from Connecticut that has been vacationing on St. John for more than 20 years. We love everything, and I mean everything, about this beautiful island. We’ve traveled a lot and we have always felt that there’s no place like St. John anywhere on earth, so we decided to build a home here. We bought our land before the real estate boom, so we had lots of attractive locations to choose from. Our priorities were a location that was very private and also well off the road to insure absolute peace and quiet. Most important, we wanted a spectacular view that included views of sunrises in the east, sunsets in the west, and lush green mountains, blue waters and unlimited views in every direction. There was really only one location that delivered what we were searching for, and that was Bordeaux Mountain, St John’s tallest mountain. We found a perfect site on Bordeaux, almost at the very top of the mountain, on a ridge that gives us views to the east and west and also the north and south, along with excellent privacy, tranquility and peacefulness. We’ve spent a lot of time in this house over the years, and every minute of it has been a blessing.
Owner/Property Manager purchased this villa in 1997
When we bought this land we were looking to get off the beaten path and find a spot where there are no tourists. We also wanted a quiet place where the privacy and the silence of the mountain forests were supreme. We searched and searched for a piece of land that matched our desires, but after exploring and scouting out much of the island, we realized there was only one location that was going to meet our demands – Bordeaux Mountain. Bordeaux is king of the St John mountains. It’s rugged, natural and unspoiled, adventuresome, relatively remote and undeveloped, and very private, with the highest elevation and the best views on St. John. Once we picked our neighborhood it took even longer to find an exceptional home site, but it pays to wait and we found exactly what we were looking for. The house itself is an attractive and comfortable villa, but the house is defined by its location, and this location is exceptional.
Lots of St. John villas claim to be unique, but when you have one of he most impressive views on St. John, like we do, then you are indeed unique. Our views include Virgin Gorda and sunrises far in the east, St Croix on the distant southern horizon, and Reef Bay in the nearby southern view, St. Thomas and sunsets to the west and Virgin Gorda to the north. Nobody on St. John can match these views; they are truly spectacular.
This house has a genuine sense of remoteness and adventure, it’s largely hidden from view, we never see a tourist, yet we’re only 4-minutes from the restaurant/bar on the Bordeaux Mountain overlook, 10 minutes from fanciful bars and restaurants in Coral Bay, and 15-20 minutes from some really great restaurants, bars, groceries and neat shops in Cruz Bay. Our pool and sun deck offer complete privacy and are perfect for full body tanning. Speaking of uniqueness, how about a functional fireplace in the living room? It’s more to enhance the French country ambiance than to keep you warm, but it’s different. As for our villa name, yes-exquisite orchids, lovingly cultivated by yours truly, surround the house. They are a flower of great beauty, and the last time a young man inadvertently picked some, I nearly had a heart attack, so please enjoy them in their natural habitat.
Cant beat the views from anywhere on the island. Orchid Knoll is truly the coziest cottage on the island. I spent every evening star gazing from the living room porch. Got to be comfortable with the remote location. Peaceful and Dreamy! I recommend Orchid Knoll to anyone wishing for peace and tranquility! We booked our next trip!
One of the most gorgeous settings imaginable combined with the coziest house and living options. Sunsets are the daily treat. 270 degree views best in the island. Hiking trails to beaches close by. Simply unforgettable experience. Can't wait to book our next trip!
I just loved being on the Hill. The views were fabulous. The home was well laid out and comfortable. Enjoyed having the pool to play in and idle away the day if I so chose. The Island itself provided many choices of venue.
I would and will recommend Orchid Hill to every one.
My stay could not have been nicer nor more relaxing.
The site was beautiful-every thing you would want to relax in and recoup your energies. The views 250 degrees were outstanding. The pool convenient and the island was charming and offered many opportunities to participate in local doings.
