About Rik Sassa

I am a stone mason/carpenter/artist that believes in living simply and close to nature. I enjoy creating spaces for people to use and demonstrating that living spaces can be beautiful, efficient comfortable and economical to build if you use your imagination and local resources. I think a building can have a life of it's own and impart a feeling on the people that stay there. I stive to create exotic, beautiful and organic structures that resonate tranquillity and harmony with their surroundings...... I hope you will agree.

Why Rik Sassa chose Pawlet

This property has every thing that I was looking for in a piece of land: various levels, a view, open land and wooded, some huge old tree and stone walls that give it a feeling of history, water nearby and a rural feeling, and of course- being in Vermont, a state I feel a great connection with.

What makes this cabin unique

The benefits of this property are that it is centrally located, as I have said, 'all roads lead to West Pawlet.....eventually'. It is also private yet easy to access.

Peaceful and Eclectic Retreat

  • 5 of 5

Rik's log cabin is exactly what my husband and dogs were looking for - a place in the woods to get away. The cabin was eclectic, clean and fully stocked. Rik met us at the cabin upon arrival and offered a great deal of information about the property, the details of the cabin and the surrounding location. In addition, he brought over a fresh loaf of bread and farm fresh eggs from his chickens.

We enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend the cabin to others!!

Perfect location for the total Vermont experience!!! Can't wait to go back!!

  • 5 of 5

I've been back to reality for a few days now and I'm absolutely having withdrawals from this breathtaking place! This is the perfect place to either unwind and escape the every day grind or round up some friends and get adventurous! I found this gem after months of researching to find the perfect spot for my mother's 70th bday. This cabin definitely surpassed my expectations! The owner, Rik, was readily waiting for our arrival (even though I was a bonehead and missed the driveway at first) and gave us a warm welcome, a full tour, and a rundown of how everything works. The four of us were completely amazed by Rik's hard work and we could all tell he put his heart and soul into the creation of this cabin. His passion for nature and reusing materials completely shows through his design. I stayed in one of the downstairs bedrooms which had a bed that I nicknamed the "Branch Bed". It was nice and cool downstairs and I had a perfect view of the woods and stars from the bed. All other bedrooms were great and spacious and included all linens. My absolute favorite parts of the cabin would have to be the bathrooms though! All 4 are different and equally as awesome! The first floor bathroom features a stone shower and a waterfall! You can open the reclaimed wood doors and enjoy some sun and a beautiful view of the woods while you shower! The downstairs bathroom features a stone tub and has a waterfall by the faucet. Loved it and took a nice long bath the first night! The master bath has a walk in shower and views of the mountains and lastly there is a mosaic mirrored bathroom that's pretty funky! Just in case we didn't get the bathing experience we wanted inside the house, there's an outdoor shower that you can enjoy while listening to the birds and looking for deer! Now that's liberating! We all had the best time and can't stop talking about it! We also brought 3 furry friends along and they had a great time as well! If you do decide to bring a furry friend, I would highly recommend bringing a tie out so they can roam the backyard but not run off. I can't wait to book another weekend here and I was truly sad to leave the woods! Many thanks to Rik for building this beauty, the warm hospitality, the delicious rosemary bread & eggs, and for joining us for a drink and some laughs! We will never forget this place and the memories made there will last a lifetime! Be back soon!!! :)

The property and the home were so unique, clean and private. We are four 60 year old broads celebrating our birthdays. The main bathroom has a waterfall in it! Rik is a wonderful host and we will be back.

Rustic fantasy cabin set on a quiet, secluded hillside.

  • 5 of 5

We are four friends that were looking for a beautiful, and quiet place to get away from it all. This was even better than we had anticipated. While there were only four of us, this rental can easily accommodate larger groups. The cabin is spacious, welcoming, and clean. Every room has artistic touches that you have to see to believe. There are lovely places to gather together as well as places to go off and be alone. We were welcomed with some freshly baked rosemary bread on arrival and the fridge had fresh eggs and orange juice. Rik made us feel welcome but gave us our privacy while letting us know that he was nearby if we needed anything. We enjoyed having fires in the fireplace as well as on the patio. There are hammocks for reading and napping and there's even a wildflower filled labyrinth to wander in. Can't say enough good things about this place but I believe I have a character limit. Suffice it to say, we will not be looking for a new rental for our getaway next year. We found the place that has everything we were looking for. Thanks again, Rik!

This place is absolutely amazing. The attention to details is incredible and the surroundings are very calm and peaceful. The bathrooms are very creative and a nice surprise. The place was clean and has lots of room.

Rik is awesome. He was very easy to work with and always responded in a timely manner. He greeted us with homemade bread that was delicious, as well as with fresh eggs and Vermont cheese. Thanks Rik for sharing your place, we will definitely be back.

This is a four season location, centrally located between five ski areas (two large, Stratton and Killington and three smaller ones, West Mountain, Bromely and Willard Mountain). There is cross country skiing and snow shoeing nearby. In the warmer months, there is trail hiking at Merck Forest Farm Center (along with various homsteading demonstrations and workshops on different weekends). There are a few mountains to hike nearby for views of surrounding towns and area (1 to 2 hour hikes). Many biking opportunities around, including a tandem bike here that is at your disposal. There is a 30 mile converted rail trail at the bottom of the driveway for biking, walking, horsebackriding and snowmobiling. Fishing on the Famous Mettowee and Battenkill rivers (canoeing/tubing as well). Dive into history and swim at the Old Dorset Marble Quarry, there is also a playhouse and an 18 hole golf course/tennis, along with fine dining in Historic Dorset (15 mins away), Saratoga is an hour away with Racetrack/Casino, shopping, dining, music and arts. Water slide, tree-top adventure course and zip line at two ski resorts in summer. Beautiful Lake St. Catherine (15 mins away), Lake Bomoseen (35 mins away) and big Lake George (45 mins away) all have boating, water skiing while Lake George has golf, mini golf, dining, malls, and Great Escape amusement park/ water park. Locally there are numerous farmers markets, yard sales, and antiquing options around. Natural Vermont provides streams to peruse, birds to watch, hunting in hunting season and mid Sept. to mid Oct. is foliage season when the hills burst into oranges, reds and yellows. Sightseeing all around, but if all this activity seems too much and what is really needed is a break from activity, then grab a cold drink and relax on the porch swing or hammock and enjoy the sunset while listening to the great horned owls, then come inside for a nice romantic evening in front of the fire.
