Casa Tres Palmas is conveniently located 1 hour from Los Angeles and San Diego, and less than 25 minutes from John Wayne Airport. There are so many things to do within a short drive, but we also recommend you spend as much time as possible enjoying the tranquil lifestyle you'll find living near the beach in San Clemente in your home away from home.
As you drive north along Pacific Coast Highway you follow the coast for about 10 minutes to Dana Point Harbor. Here you can rent kayaks, sailboats, paddleboards, join a fishing trip, or even take the ferry to Catalina Island for the day.
Another 10 minutes and you're in downtown Laguna Beach, where you can find excellent restaurants, shopping, art galleries, beaches and the Pageant of the Masters and Sawdust Festival in the summertime. Another 15 minutes north and you're in Newport Beach, home of 'The OC' complete with an active nightlife and just about all the high end shopping you could ask for.
LA is another 30 minutes north taking the 405 FWY. Classic sights include Venice Beach, Hollywood, China Town. You can catch a Hockey game, there are two basketball teams including the Laker's, Dodger Stadium if you love baseball, and plenty of action sports events.
If you take the I-5 FWY for 10 minutes you pass the historic downtown area of San Juan Capistrano. There is a beautiful Mission that was founded in 1776, a definite must see for those interested in California history. There is also a large train station nearby. You can also find excellent hiking if you drive into the Ortega Mountains about 20-30 minutes east of San Juan Capistrano. Make sure to get a wilderness adventure pass from the local merchants to use the designated parking areas, and make sure you have a map!
Another 10 minutes north and you'll find the Irvine Spectrum which is a huge shopping center with top of the line retail stores and many familiar restaurant names such as Yardhouse, Cheesecake Factory, and Javier's. There is an IMAX and 20+ theaters.
Disneyland and California Adventure are only about 35-40 minutes away from the house! These are a must for every family, an unforgettable experience. There is also Knott's Berry Farm nearby which is a Western theme park. We also have our local Orange County teams, the Anaheim Ducks hockey team and the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim baseball squad.
For the surfers: World famous Trestles Beach is just a short drive to the south side of town. If you decide to take the beach path you'll start at Linda Lane Beach and head south. You'll pass the following beaches in order: San Clemente Pier, T-Street, Lost Winds, Riviera, State Park (Calafia Beach), Cotton's Point, Upper Trestles, and the world class Lower Trestles where the tour stops every Summer.
For the longboard and paddleboard enthusiasts: San Onofre is the southernmost fwy exit in town. You'll find it very easy to spend all day hanging out down at 'San-O's', which is undoubtedly a landmark of surf history. Make sure you get down there early in the summertime, as people line up starting at dawn to get the best parking and a few waves before the crowds arrive.
Casa Tres Palmas is a two block walk from the water, and about four blocks to Del Mar Avenue which is our 'Main Street'. We try to never miss a sunset down walking the beach trail and always try to catch the Farmer's and craft market on Del Mar Ave. every Sunday morning. Happy hour at the Fisherman's restaurant on the pier Mon-Fri is also a local favorite.
There is also plenty of fun to be had to our south. There is a harbor in Oceanside about 20 minutes down the I-5 where fishing trips can be arranged. Del Mar Racetrack is another 15 minutes south and opens some time in July and finishes in September. There are usually free concerts held every Friday and Saturday which are always super fun.
San Diego is about one hour by car or train from the house, and is a very fun city. Daytime activities for the family include the San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld, San Diego Wild Animal Park, and LegoLand for the younger ones. If in season you can catch a San Diego Charger football game or watch the Padres play baseball.
Above all we hope you enjoy yourself. Save as many days to do 'nothing,' because it feels really good doing nothing by the beach in San Clemente:)
About the owner: I've been fortunate enough to grow up in San Clemente and go to college at Concordia in Irvine, so I've never really had to leave town. Around twelve years ago I met my wonderful wife, who moved here while in high school. Thankfully, like me, she never plans to move away! We love to travel, ideally to remote tropical locales with good waves. Because we travel so often it only makes sense to give others the opportunity to enjoy our beach house while we're gone.
Why the Owner Chose San Clemente, CA, USA:
We chose this home because it was perfect for us. It is the quintessential San Clemente Beach Cottage which we upgraded to our tastes. I grew up in the neighborhood and must say it is really a great neighborhood
The Unique Benefits at this House:
