About Bruce Johnson

Hello! My name is Bruce. Welcome to New Orleans. I personally renovated my home in 2006.

Bruce Johnson purchased this house in 2005

Why Bruce Johnson chose Algiers Point

The home is located in historic Algiers Point, the second oldest settlement in New Orleans.

What makes this house unique

My home is an economical alternative to the French Quarter, and yet is just a five block walk or drive to the Algiers/Canal Street Car/Passenger Ferry. Historic Algiers Point is a quiet alternative to the fast French Quarter pace, and yet close enough to enjoy the full benefits of the French Quarter and all of New Orleans.

Great value and location

  • 5 of 5

Lots of positives: neighborhood was perfectly safe for walking at just about any hour of the day for a few women on a girls trip. Riding the ferry at $2 each way can add up, but is worth it, the Uber ride might take twice as long at certain times and is around $12 each time. You are literally across from the French Quarter. At a fraction of the cost, and in my opinion, much cleaner, safer and friendlier environment. Unit was well maintained and having a washer and dryer is a huge plus. Beds were comfortable and not dated. Sofa very comfy, even though it was not slept in by us. Please note, it is a basement style apartment, and comfortable for average height females - not taller than 5'6". A tall gentleman may feel crowded or too close to the ceiling.

Things to consider:

WiFi was unable to connect all trip. This was not great, since all of us had different cell phone service providers, and NONE of our providers gave us coverage - we frequently missed calls. This lack of coverage stayed happening citywide, but worse in the apartment. Do NOT wear impractical shoes. The streets are broken/dirty/messy and not worth ruining anything more than 1 pair of sneakers. Ladies - to go out at night I recommend sandals.

Food in general is amazing - places we strongly recommend include Ruby Slipper Café, Arnauds Remoulade, and Oceana. Didn't make it to Café Du Monde, but smelled delicious and was full as we walked by. Many of the major restaurants will have lines or long wait times - save yourself the headache and download the NOWait app and you will be contacted when its time to eat.

Another interesting tidbit - most clubs feature live bands, not DJ. This matters if you plan to dance. Side note: while Bourbon St is fun, especially to drink, Frenchman Street is the new place to get upscale jazz classics and new music. It's also a little cleaner. Do not engage in conversation with the street people....they will hustle you out of $20 for 1 picture snapped on your cellphone.

Overall - a great experience and we plan on returning to the city and using this awesome property as home base again.

Cute house in quiet safe neighborhood.

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay very much. It was a bit small for the 6 of us but we made it work. The low ceilings were a challange for my over 6 foot tall son and nephew but not a bad thing. Overall I would definitely come back to this location again. I'd even like the info for the upper unit too, to rent on my next trip to NOLA. Bruce was awesome and we kept in contact during our stay to make sure everything went smoothly. This home made our first trip to the Big Easy super easy and comfy. Thank you again Bruce!

Property and neighborhood is lovely.

  • 4 of 5

This listing is the bottom floor of a really awesome house in Algiers Point. The neighborhood was fantastic, we all loved it. The entrance was to the bottom floor apartment was a bit secretive, but my family loved that! I will also say that the pictures here on this listing don't do the place any justice. Its MUCH nicer and better decorated than these pictures show! Its a roomy 2 bedroom, one bath with large, open kitchen/dining/living space and separate laundry room. The only real downfall was how low the ceilings were, and the ceiling fans even lower! Actually so low that my 6'2" tall husband hit his head more than once! Just be aware! Bathroom was very large with large garden tub that my little kids loved! The place was immaculately clean! There is really only one designated parking space out front, but room close by if you have more than one vehicle. Its also just a quit walk to the ferry that takes you into the French Quarter. Also, several great little neighborhood eateries nearby, we really loved Tout de Suite. Delish for breakfast!

The only reason I did not give this listing 5 stars is because of some strange interaction with the owner. I know I scour reviews to see other peoples experience and it was odd enough that I thought people deserved to know why I didn't give it 5 stars. In the beginning, the owner was timely in his correspondence. He sent us detailed instructions for how to get to, and into the apartment. He also gave detailed instructions for the stay, and what to do after. When we left, we texted to say so, like he'd asked, so the cleaning lady could come by. When we were several hours towards home, we realized my youngest had left one of his stuffed animals behind. I texted to ask if he'd check with his cleaning lady and said that if it were found, we'd pay to have it mailed to us. She did in fact find it, and via text, I offered to paypal the owner the money for shipping. He said he did not have paypal and asked for my credit card number. He got frustrated with me when I wouldn't give it to him, but then asked for our mailing address. Later the same day, he called and again asked for my credit card number and got heated with me when I would not give it to him. We've still not completely resolved the issue, I sent him a money order in the mail to cover the $5 shipping a week ago, and we're hopeful our little lovey is on its way back to us!

Owner's Response: I’m glad you enjoyed the property. I’m sorry you misinterpreted my eagerness to return the stuffed animal. When we first discussed it, I thought you wanted it ASAP, hence the credit card. As it turns out, it’s been 2 weeks and I still haven’t received your check. I will mail it as soon as I receive your check. Thank you.

Perfect for our needs.

  • 5 of 5

This is our 3rd time staying here and it is perfect for ALL of our needs. We travel with two dogs and the backyard is perfect for running around. There are two delicious cafes in walking distance that we always eat at least once during our trip. The ease of use of the ferry to get to the city is also very convenient.
