The 'Cottage' at Lion's Gate - Spectacular view in lush surroundings

Bedrooms 1
Space 520 sq ft
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 3 - 4 nights

About the property

My husband Chris and I have lived on St. Thomas for over 20 years. He came to dive, I came to sail. We met by chance and discovered we both have a love of the water and the Caribbean life style. Chris is very talented and knew he wanted to live here permanetley, so he built a house on the top of the hill. We got married in 1995, and often talked about making the home we love accessible to guests. In 2008 we expanded it to accommodate guests in our downstairs studio apartment. We are thrilled with the way it turned out as it captures the Caribbean life style that we love.

The apartment has been so popular that we decided to build a one bedroom cottage. It took a year and I am so happy to say the we finally finished it on July 4th. Independence day has new meaning. It is a Caribbean dream cottage with spectacular views. We marvel at how many humming birds call the apartment home and now it seems that the green parrots have up living in the tress near the cottage.

I'm sure up will love it too. The spacious porch is a perfect way to enjoy your first cup of coffee or to sit back in the evening and watch the colors change over the islands with a cool beverage in your hand. The trade winds will keep you cool as you sit outside from breakfast to diner, and of course if needed there is air conditioning.

My husband, Chris, and I live on the property. We will help you enjoy your vacation in any way we can. Just ask for local tips on restaurants and activities.

About Maxine Lavitt

Chris rebuilt the main house in 1989 after Hurricane Hugo blew it down. And then he met me. We married in 1995. We share a love of the islands and enjoy showing it off to friends and family.

Maxine Lavitt purchased this cottage in 1989

Why Maxine Lavitt chose Red Hook

The view and the breeze are something I never get tired of. Not even after all these years. It would be hard for us to ever move from here. The parrots and hummingbirds are personal friends.

What makes this cottage unique

We are close to everything but feel a million miles away when we reach the top of the hill.

New addition to the bedroom, a 53" TV so you can watch your favorite shows with the AC on in perfect conditions. There is also a TV in the living room.

You can watch two shows at once.

Wonderful Stay at The Cottage at Lion's Gate

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I wanted a honeymoon with a little adventure. We chose The Cottage at Lion's Gate and couldn't be happier! It was so nice to feel like a local instead of staying at a resort. The cottage was adorable, but the view was spectacular! The pictures don't even do it justice. We are still talking about how much we miss that view! Max was awesome and so helpful in recommending places to go and things to eat. We decided to sail with her one day since so many of the other reviews recommended it, and we had a great time! Definitely look into it! We rented a car and were glad that we had it. There are tons of restaurants right down the hill in the Red Hook Plaza and a beautiful beach within a 5 minute drive. The car and passenger ferries are right down the hill too. The location was perfect! I was a little worried about not having air conditioning in the living room, but as soon as you swing those doors open, the breeze comes flowing through the whole house. Honestly, we spent most of our time on the porch anyway (Louie was great company on the porch as well!) The bed was comfortable and the shower was huge! You won't regret staying at The Cottage at Lion's Gate!

Owner's Response: Evan and Justin, my wish is that you come back to celebrate an anniversary. The best was getting to spend the day with you on the sail boat and show you the underwater world. I'm writing this from the porch and the sun is just coming up. The view is always changing and I love it too. Thanks so much for spending your honeymoon with us. Max

Really nice place.

  • 5 of 5

Just up the hill out of the busy little strip of red hook. Bring walking shoes if your not renting a car. Steep roads to walk anywhere.

What a fantastic place to stay

  • 5 of 5

Your eyes are not lying to you. Yes, the view is fantastic. The location is unbeatable. The hosts are wonderful.

Here's what I learned from this trip....

1. Rent a vehicle with four wheel drive. Your gonna need it if you are adventurous and want to explore st thomas and st John.

2. Go to Megan's Bay. You won't be disappointed. The food concession will surprise you how good it is.

3. Go to Trunks Bay, but take food with you. No fun driving back to Cruz bay for food and adult beverage.

4. Moe's Market, down the hill, has the very best Norweigan salmon you will ever find. Melts in your mouth like butter.

5. Be very patient when driving. Took me a day to get used to left side driving.

6. Louie, and his buddy, are the best guests you will have. They are hilarious.

Had a great time. Will definitely come back again.

Owner's Response: Hi George and Pam, We loved having you stay at the Cottage. A shame you left a day before the big super, blue, red moon. It lights up the harbor but then we can't see the big dipper. We hope to see you back again for a getaway. Seeing your smiling face when I got home was always a delight Thanks again. Max

Great place to stay!!

  • 5 of 5

I would stay here again! Maxine is great, so are her husband and dogs. The view from the balcony of the cottage was beautiful, it almost did not feel real. We ate breakfast out there in the morning (and Lou, one of the dogs on the property, joined us in hopes for some bacon!) and we sat out there and watched the harbor at night. The bed was comfortable, the bathroom was nice (but if you have windows/doors open, the wind might blow the bathroom door and it sounds like someone is knocking - they are not knocking!!). We felt very safe, the property is gated.

We rented a car and ended up not even using it a lot. Red Hook has a lot of places to eat and shop within walking distance of the cottage. The hill back up to the cottage is not horrible but you'll need decent leg strength, I hike a lot so that's just my opinion. The Ferry dock is within walking distance too so you can travel to other islands.

We ate at Senor Pizza, Senor Frog, Fish Tails, and the Tap & Still. The only thing I didn't like was the burger at the Tap & Still. Everything else was good. They are all within walking distance to the cottage. We walked every night, we got sweaty, but it was okay. Driving on these islands is kind of scary.

Overall, we had a great time. We would go back in a heartbeat. Thanks Maxine!

Owner's Response: I'm so happy to hear that Jessica was as awed by our view as I am. It is something you never get tired of. We are in the heart of the action but high enough up on the hill to feel like you are in the country. Perfect. Thanks for staying with us and I hope to see you back Maxine

Lovely cottage

  • 4 of 5

Wonderful hostess, very well appointed, clean, comfortable, adorable space with AMAZING views. Those who would appreciate being perched just above the heart of all the goings on of st thomas, including lots of music and lively people, would most enjoy their stay in this Red Hook location. Get a 4wd-your stay and meanderings will be easier. Great beaches nearby.

Car: recommended

Red Hook, on the East end of St. Thomas, is the perfect place to stay. Just down the hill from Lion's Gate is the ferry terminal. In 15 minutes you can be across Pillsbury Sound and in the National Park on St. John. A 40 minute ride takes you to Tortola, in the BVI. Bring your passports for this. The Baths at Virgin Gorda are spectacular with huge boulders that look like a giant tossed them up in the air and they landed in the ocean creating The Baths.

American Yacht Harbor is right at the bottom of our hill. A 2 minute car ride or five minute walk. All the day sail boats and fishing boats leave from here.

Red Hook also has an active night life. Everything from a cold beer and hot pizza to fine dining. Shops to explore and the docks are filled with yachts to dream about.
