My husband Chris and I have lived on St. Thomas for over 20 years. He came to dive, I came to sail. We met by chance and discovered we both have a love of the water and the Caribbean life style. Chris is very talented and knew he wanted to live here permanetley, so he built a house on the top of the hill. We got married in 1995, and often talked about making the home we love accessible to guests. In 2008 we expanded it to accommodate guests in our downstairs studio apartment. We are thrilled with the way it turned out as it captures the Caribbean life style that we love.
The apartment has been so popular that we decided to build a one bedroom cottage. It took a year and I am so happy to say the we finally finished it on July 4th. Independence day has new meaning. It is a Caribbean dream cottage with spectacular views. We marvel at how many humming birds call the apartment home and now it seems that the green parrots have up living in the tress near the cottage.
I'm sure up will love it too. The spacious porch is a perfect way to enjoy your first cup of coffee or to sit back in the evening and watch the colors change over the islands with a cool beverage in your hand. The trade winds will keep you cool as you sit outside from breakfast to diner, and of course if needed there is air conditioning.
My husband, Chris, and I live on the property. We will help you enjoy your vacation in any way we can. Just ask for local tips on restaurants and activities.
Chris rebuilt the main house in 1989 after Hurricane Hugo blew it down. And then he met me. We married in 1995. We share a love of the islands and enjoy showing it off to friends and family.
Maxine Lavitt purchased this cottage in 1989
The view and the breeze are something I never get tired of. Not even after all these years. It would be hard for us to ever move from here. The parrots and hummingbirds are personal friends.
We are close to everything but feel a million miles away when we reach the top of the hill.
New addition to the bedroom, a 53" TV so you can watch your favorite shows with the AC on in perfect conditions. There is also a TV in the living room.
You can watch two shows at once.
Located on a hillside above Red Hook, this cottage was ideal for sunrise coffee and relaxing drinks on the porch, and the easy one minute drive down the hill into town or to the main road for exploring the island. The ferry to St John is also in Red Hook. The cottage is comfortable and quiet ( save for the island's ubiquitous crowing roosters), and was perfectly equipped with all you need: wifi, wine glasses, beach towels, fans, a very comfortable bed and a parking spot! Maxine and her two friendly dogs could not have been more welcoming. Make sure to get Maxine's tips on where to eat and which beaches to check out. And ask about her sailing excursions, too. Her sloop is right in Red Hook. We will definitely return.
We arrived at The Cottage and were first overwhelmed by the view. When we met the owner, Maxine, we realized that we were in for an amazing vacation. Her attention to detail showed in every step. We felt as if we were in our own cottage, with a very well equipped kitchen, comfortable bed in an air conditioned bedroom, even a great and friendly dog "Eva" that would come and greet us every morning during breakfast. She always got a slice of cheese from us. The highlight of our trip was a day trip on Captain Maxine's boat. Don't miss it!
I brought my husband here for his birthday. We explored St Croix, St Thomas, and St John, and we couldn't imagine why we'd stay anywhere other than the Cottage if we come back to the USVI.
When we walked into the cottage, we couldn't believe the view. Yes, that view means a steep hill up from town, but we, a middle-aged, out-of-shape couple, walked up it every day (according to my FitBit, it's 24 floors between the cottage and Duffy's Love Shack...where our bartender used fresh-ground nutmeg even on the happy-hour bushwackers). If you want to go anywhere outside of Redhook on the island, though, you'll need a car, and the cottage has a secure parking spot.
We had fun cooking a couple of meals in the kitchen, which is well appointed and had plenty of staples. The shower is huge and fun, and the bedroom is comfy. When we were awake in the cottage, though, we spent most of our time on the porch enjoying the view, not just of the harbor but also the beautiful landscaping around the cottage.
The pictures do not exaggerate, and Maxine was a great host.
This was our second visit to the Cottage -- and it's as wonderful as ever. Just enough space for two, knockout views and fresh air, a kitchen and a porch to die for. It's all you need for a visit to Red Hook, which has more and more options for shopping and dining than even our first visit two years ago. Chris and Max are great, and their dog Eva is a sweetheart too. Thanks again for a wonderful visit!
Our thirtieth wedding anniversary at Lions gate!! Wow!!! will not wait 30 years to go again. The mountainside chalet provided the perfect setting to relax, unwind, close to the action and great place to launch exploration of the VI's. The well furnished chalet was very comfortable with lost of accessories such as BBQ pit, beach chairs, beach towels and had a superb view of the habor. The porche was a fantastic place to enjoy an early morning cup of coffee or an evening glass of wine.
Max (the host) has a great host full of suggestions for trips, eating and shopping. The chalet is close to fantastic restaurants, and Moe's a local grocery store. the harbor gives you easy access to the ferry to St, John, and to book sailing or motor boat excursions.
What a wonderful experience! Since the cottage was built as a labor of love, details were well thought out and executed. The bed, the cabinets, several of the furnishings, and even the doors were handmade using mahogany by the ownesr. Similarly, the tiles were cut and laid by the owners, too. Attention to detail through out. The cottage had everything we needed. Also, we had a delightful breeze throughout our stay. Our hostess was very friendly, warm, and funny, and always available to make recommendations regarding places to go and food to eat. We particularly enjoyed the chicken roti at Latitudes 18. We went sailing with our hostess and had a lovely time. Her first mate was able to identify many fish and sea creatures while we were snorkeling. And, our hostess recommended a delightful company for our power boat excursion all of the way up to the Baths on Virgin Gorda. We truly feel that our hosts are new friends. We recommend this cottage to anyone and everyone visiting St. Thomas. We would stay at this cottage again in a heartbeat!
Red Hook, on the East end of St. Thomas, is the perfect place to stay. Just down the hill from Lion's Gate is the ferry terminal. In 15 minutes you can be across Pillsbury Sound and in the National Park on St. John. A 40 minute ride takes you to Tortola, in the BVI. Bring your passports for this. The Baths at Virgin Gorda are spectacular with huge boulders that look like a giant tossed them up in the air and they landed in the ocean creating The Baths.
American Yacht Harbor is right at the bottom of our hill. A 2 minute car ride or five minute walk. All the day sail boats and fishing boats leave from here.
Red Hook also has an active night life. Everything from a cold beer and hot pizza to fine dining. Shops to explore and the docks are filled with yachts to dream about.
