First time to St Lucia? St Lucia has two distinct "personalities" - hopefully this short guide will help you decide what is right for you:

The North (Rodney Bay/Castries/Gros Islet) is where you find all the large resorts, lots of restaurants, a casino, duty-free shopping, etc. There is a little hiking and snorkeling on Pigeon Island (in Gros Islet). The views are nice, but overall the area is not too dissimilar from many other Caribbean Islands. This is the area to choose if you are looking to mostly soak up the sun on the beach, and want a typical Caribbean beach town to walk around in the evening for bars and restaurants for tourist-oriented nightlife.

The South is where you find the iconic Pitons and views that will literally stop you in your tracks. Here is where the best outdoor activities are located - hiking in a rain forest, climbing a Piton, snorkeling, diving, dolphin and whale watching, waterfalls, ATV rides, zip lining, plantation tours, horseback riding, mountain biking, mud baths and the drive-in volcano, wind and kite-surfing, and of course, relaxing on the beach, including the white-sanded Sugar Beach. A few resorts/hotels and private villas are sprinkled across the hillsides, many (like ours) positioned to get the most amazing views. The restaurants range from food trucks for lunch to white-tablecloth fine dining. There is a much more local and laid-back vibe to this part of the island than the North. Ten years after a stay in Soufriere you'll still recognize your pictures as being from St Lucia. If you are looking for an outdoor and active vacation, or to simply stay at an accommodation with incredible views of the Pitons and feel your stress melt away, this is the part of the island you want.

Why is this all important? It's difficult to have both. It's about a 90-minute drive (each way) from Rodney Bay to Soufriere on very twisty roads, so don't be fooled by the short linear distance on the map and stay in the north if you want to play in the south - or vice versa.

What would a stay at Villa Grand Piton be like?

_______________________________________________

Picture a romantic, tranquil, spacious villa, high on the ridge of a hill overlooking the Caribbean.

Start your day watching the sailboats glide along the sea under a rainbow, while sipping a cup of smooth local coffee or cappuccino.

Float in the sparkling swimming pool, surrounded by cashew trees and brilliant bougainvillea. Or grab your gear and go snorkeling or diving at the best areas in St Lucia, only a short drive away.

Dine on delicious freshly-caught fish outside in the shaded gazebo as the sun sets over the Caribbean.

After dinner, marvel at the Milky Way and the billions of stars in the inky-black night sky.

Sip a glass of wine while being cooled by the mountain breeze.

Watch for shooting stars while being serenaded by the music of the night.

Everywhere you look, you are surrounded by a postcard-perfect panorama of the Piton mountains and the Caribbean Sea and the most amazing sunsets. Inside, you have all the comforts of home with comfortable queen beds, en-suite bathrooms, air-conditioners blowing cool air on the beds, a wonderfully-equipped full kitchen and an entertainment room.

Villa Grand Piton enjoys an ideal location, enjoying the same jaw-dropping view of the Pitons and the Caribbean as Jade Mountain and Anse Chastanet resorts. You will be just a few minutes' drive away from beaches, restaurants, and activities, but far enough up the hill that you'll feel that you are at the top of the world, away from it all. Our unique location means it is incredibly peaceful, and the position of the villa ensures that you'll have an amazing view of the Pitons and the sun setting over the Caribbean

Our friendly staff will keep the villa and the pool sparkling clean and give you assistance around-the-clock, whether you need information on the best time to climb the Piton or just need more shampoo. Our housekeeper and property manager, Doxie, is an excellent cook - she can either just do the cooking for a modest fee (usually about $20 US for a multi-course dinner) or provide your entire meal (please ask for pricing).

Additional important information about Villa Grand Piton:

Our home is a non-smoking villa. No smoking anywhere in the villa or on the grounds, except in a designated smoking area at the base of the driveway.

The villa and grounds pose inherent dangers for children under 13. If your party includes any children under 13, please contact us so we can describe the issues. We want to ensure Villa Grand Piton is a good fit for your party.

The villa is not available for rent without the staff.

The villa is built in the open-architecture style of most Caribbean residences. This style emphasizes harmony with the outdoors, and does not try to create an impenetrable barrier between the interior and exterior. Doors are not weather-stripped, windows are not covered by glass, and the buildings often have other openings to allow free airflow, allowing insects and geckos into these houses. Our windows are covered by screens, beds and the Jacuzzi all have mosquito nets, and we have an outdoor mosquito-control machine to help keep the mosquito population down.

Given the open nature of the house (interior walls that do not go to the ceiling, no glass covering the windows), the air conditioning in the bedrooms will not be able to cool the rooms, but does blow cool air on the beds to make sleeping a little more comfortable.

Noises also carry somewhat in an open-air house, and you may be able to hear what is happening in a nearby room in the house when the rest of the house is very quiet. We've put some small radios in the bathrooms and there are TV's in the bedrooms. Feel free to turn either of these on to create some background noise.

We do require a signed (electronic signature) rental agreement, which will be provided upon your request to book the villa.

About Owner - Bill and Loretta

We've been married for almost 20 years, and just sent our youngest child off to college. We both have stressful full-time jobs as engineers in the energy industry, and we have to fight the traffic of a big town (Houston) every day. We're getting close to retirement, so we started looking for a place to retire a few years ago, and decided that St Lucia was the only choice after visiting multiple times. We grew up in the Midwest, and never, ever dreamt that we'd retire in the Caribbean! But we love St Lucia so much, we decided to buy our retirement home a few years early, and share our home, so that you can experience the joy of spending time in St Lucia, too.

Why Owner - Bill and Loretta chose Soufriere

We purchased Villa Grand Piton as our vacation/retirement home. We knew it was the right place for us the moment we stepped out of the car - the view of the Pitons stopped us in our tracks and we just stood there, awestruck, for a few minutes. Then we walked into the house, and saw how spacious, light and airy it was, and we were positive this was the right choice. After spending our first evening there, listening to the tree frogs and the breeze rustling the leaves, we could not imagine any other place that we could call "home".

We hope you find it as magical and restorative as we do.

What makes this villa unique

We started vacationing in St Lucia over 10 years ago, and the beauty of the island, the weather, and the friendliness of the people convinced us we had to spend as much time as possible in St Lucia. We've visited much of the Caribbean, and we've never found any other place where the people are as genuinely warm and caring as in St Lucia.

St. Lucia is a wonderful getaway whether you are looking for romance, rejuvenation or exciting activities. Palm-fringed beaches, unspoiled rainforests and the majestic Piton Mountains make up the gorgeous landscape of Saint Lucia. Natural waterfalls, breath-taking views, friendly locals and authentic culture are sure to impress even the most cultured traveler. St. Lucia has some of the most beautiful scenery in the world. Among the natural beauty of the island are ancient fortresses, fishing villages and gracious town squares waiting to be discovered. You can hike, bird watch and explore the natural attractions of St. Lucia or you can take part in many of the activities on land, water or air from horseback riding to SCUBA diving to helicopter rides.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We had such a wonderful and relaxing time. I have so much appreciation for the kind and warm people here. Doxie made my trip extra special. I really enjoyed her chocolate tea and special remedies for my chest cold. The food was amazing! This is a magical place and we truly loved every minute.

Magical experience!

  • 5 of 5

Words really can not describe this slice of paradise! We had a family of 6 of us and as soon as we arrived we were amazed at how beautiful and breathtaking the view was. It was like something you would see out of a magazine! The sunsets and rainbows were amazing! The view of the pitons were magical! The beautiful flowers and luscious landscape surrounding us with little hummingbirds everywhere were so lovely. The villas itself was extremely well kept and fit all 6 of us comfortably. The staff was amazing! Junior, Billy, Doxie, Neil and John took very good care of us. We hired Junior to drive us (the only way to go in my opinion) and he took us everywhere! We got to see ALL of Soufriere and it's beauty! We came to St. Lucia for our destination wedding and this experience will be one unforgettable experience for our family. Loretta you really did an amazing job with this gorgeous villas and your staff! They have become like family to us. This villas will forever hold a special place in our hearts and we will definitely be returning for our anniversary! I recommend this place to anyone looking for the ultimate St. Lucia vibe! Thank you to everyone that helped make it perfect and unforgettable! Definitely Good Vibes at the Grand Piton Villas! :)

Unforgettable Birthday Week!

  • 5 of 5

Breathtaking!

Words fail to describe the beauty of this place!

Saint Lucia is definitely one of the most breathtakingly beautiful places on Earth!

Villa Grand Piton is spacious, beautifully decorated and comfortable with all the amenities you might need. I forgot my hat and was glad to see they even provided that!

Loretta was extremely helpful giving us information and tips prior to our trip. We also communicated with her easily during our trip through messenger.

Junior our driver picked us up at the airport and drove us to the villa, he also served as concierge making restaurant and activities reservations for us. He even got us a dentist appointment!

We visited the volcano, waterfalls, scenic trails, helicopter and boat tour, spent the entire day at Sugar Beach, definitely one of the most beautiful I've ever seen and dined at various wonderful restaurants.

Doxie is fabulous, we payed to have her shop for us and prepare breakfast every morning and a few dinners as well. Her lobster is superb! She even baked me a birthday cake!

The lush green vegetation, the breathtaking panorama never gets old! We were visited by tiny little birds in the mornings and got a frog concerto every night.

Weather was perfect! Thankfuly St. Lucia wasn't affected by the hurricanes this year. We got a little sunshine and a little rain, which made for gorgeous rainbows. The sunsets and the full moon where magical!! We even got to experience a sunset through a rainstorm...something I've never seen before!

We've had a truly unforgettable week! Favorite place I've visited so far!

Did not want to leave!!

intoxicating!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I were so blessed to have our long-awaited vacation in St. Lucia after the 3 Hurricanes the preceeding month. The sense of absolute peace and calm upon landing in beautiful St. Lucia was palpable. The trip to the villa with Junior was filled with wonder at the incredible vistas of sea and mountain with beautiful blooming flowers added for emphasis.

Junior met us with a cold Piton beer that was so welcome after the long flight from the states. He gave us history of the island's past and explained the route and what we should look for in such an informative manner. We felt like old friends immediately!

Our first view from the Gran Ption Villa was spell-binding. Wow! It really looks unreal it is so beautiful! Doxie met us along with the rest of the wonderful staff showing us around the property that was to be our private heaven for the next week. She made us roti that was out-of-this-world and gave us a refreshing home-made rum punch that further lifted our spirits.

Our welcome basket was sumptuous and lasted well into the week. When we found ourselves rested we asked Junior if he could deliver us a pizza the next evening for supper and he helped us to formulate the plans for the next few days excursions: we hired him to take us to the volcano and mud-baths, the botanical gardens, the beach at Anse Chastanet and Mamin and even shopping is Soufriere! Snorkeling was fabulous near the villa but (like so many othes), we opted to have him take us back to the villa afterwards. That is quite a hill to climb to get to that magnificent view!

We had 2-3 days of rainy weather but suntanned in between the showers! We never regretted that we had spent more time at the villa as we had Doxie show us how to cook with wonderful St. Lucian spices (which she also gave us as a gift upon our departure). The gardens around the villa are full of fruit and we learned more about life as a native St. Lucian from Paul, Neil and Doxie throughout our awesome stay. The entertainment room was wonderful and gave us a chance to "stay connected" with our favorite movies (what a grand collection they have!). But my wife loved the bathtub the best and enjoyed relaxing at the end of each day reflecting upon how wonderful each and every day had been. We visited the Tet Paul nature trail and got great pictures of the surrounding islands and the Pitons but truthfully, the view at Gran Piton Villa is just as grand! Sad to say, we left our hearts in St. Lucia.....just like the rest.

Great St Lucia experience at Villa Grand Piton

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 arrived on Saturday with an agenda of sightseeing throughout the island. However, we loved the Soufriere area so much that we took advantage of the many activities close to the villa. The villa itself has a beautiful breathtaking view over the water. We spent many afternoons relaxing in the pool and enjoying the beautiful sunsets. Doxie oversees the management of the villa. It was so nice to have housekeeping each day and Doxie is a fabulous cook. We had Doxie cook us dinner for 3 of the nights and she uses fresh local ingredients which we all throroughly enjoyed. The villa has spacious bedrooms and the air conditioning in the bedrooms made sleeping comfortable. The linens, towels and supplies were all in good shape. When the owner states that she provides what you need, she means it. Beach towels, chairs, coolers, bags, and snorkeling equipment in a variety of sizes is all provided for your use. I can't think of any improvements needed and the location and atmosphere made this the perfect place for our week on St Lucia!

Wonderful anniversary stay

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I decided to travel to St. Lucia for our 17th anniversary. After looking at different resort and VRBO options, we decided to stay at Villa Grand Piton. We could have been more pleased with our choice. The house offers outstanding views and an excellent staff. We saw countless rainbows that made the already beautiful view even more incredible. Doxie was exceptional, as was her rum punch and cooking. I don't think you could have anyone better at her position. Neil brought us fresh coconuts one day to drink by the pool. Junior was not only a great driver, but he also provided great insight on things to do. I highly recommend hiring him versus renting a car. The roads are difficult in spots, and it was much more relaxing not having to worry about it. I feel the cost difference between the two was nominal. We stopped to eat at the Reef on the way in. Their sailfish and bakes were excellent. We also stopped at the grocery store to pick up a few drinks and mixers. The welcome basket had more than we anticipated. It lasted us a good bit of the week, as we ate out and had Doxie cook for us a few times.

The house has pretty much every amenity you can imagine, from various snorkel masks, to beach chairs, to mosquito protection, to a computer with printer (for airline tickets), to large TV's. There is a cold water dispenser in the house, so there is no need to buy extra water at the store. There literally is no stone left unturned when it comes to the thought put into this house rental. Loretta is available and responsive to any needs or issues.

Anse Chastenet/Jade Mountain/Anse Mamin is down the hill from the home. I recommend checking the cruise ship itinerary before going there. Two chairs and a hut are only $30. On a non-cruise day it was very pleasant. We were told that Anse Mamin had the best burgers on the island. It was surprisingly one of the best burgers I have had in a while. Sugar beach is a short drive over between the pitons. The chairs there are more expensive (about $100), but the service was pleasant.

I can recommend Ladera, Mango Tree, and Boucan. Boucon was the best food in our opinion. The other two were excellent as well, and provided amazing sunset views.

You will not go wrong in choosing this house... Amazing views, great staff, responsive owners. You truly could not ask for more.
