2-Bedroom, 1.5 Bathrooms Apartment With Magnificent Views Of The Luberron
About Jackie Ghiara
Jackie and I (Hugo) met and married while living in New York City in 1990. I'm from Cordoba, Argentina and she's from Waterford, Ireland. We moved to Europe in 1998 and we currently live on a small farm in the South East of Ireland.
Jackie Ghiara purchased this Apartment in 2013
Why Jackie Ghiara chose Ménerbes
We purchased in this area because of its location, history and charm. Where I grew up we had a similar climate and I just love spending time in Provence as it feels very familiar to me... but it's a lot easier to travel here a few times a year rather than trekking all the way to Argentina. Jackie loves it here too, again because of the weather. Living in Ireland we get more than our fair share of rain. So, we look forward to spending time in Provence where we know that the sun will shine most days. What attracted us to Menerbes was curiosity about Dora Maar, Picassos's companion and muse. He bought a house in Menerbes in 1944 and ended up gifting it to Dora when they separated. She was an artist and photographer and spent the latter part of her life living in Menerbes. Her house is currently an artist and writers retreat. What we discovered when we visited was that Dora wasn't the only artist who called Menerbes home. The village was also home to artists; Nicolas de Stael, Joe Downing and Jane Eakin, none of whom are still alive... but that fact gives you an idea of how tranquil and beautiful a place Menerbes is. Another reason for choosing this area is its location. It's very close to Marseille airport (Marignane 50 minutes) and also close to Nice, just a 2 hour drive away. And, locally the village is well located to visit and enjoy the many hilltop villages such as Oppede Le Vieux, Gordes, Goult, Joucaste, LaCoste, Roussillon. Menerbes is just a short 20-minute drive to Apt where you can enjoy the weekly Saturday market. And for more general shopping and larger stores we're just 40 minutes from the beautiful city of Avignon.
What makes this Apartment unique
The property really captivated us because we both love old buildings and we also value our privacy and this property comes with a lot of history and is also very private. The apartment is made up of two interconnected caves which we think were originally used for housing animals and later used as the village laundry. The previous owner renovated the caves from a ruined state and turned them into a very comfortable retreat from the world. In addition what made us fall for this property was the fact that it had a private terrace and great views out onto the Luberon. In Menerbes, it's very difficult to find a property in the village that also has outdoor space and a view, but we managed to get everything we were looking for all wrapped up in... Les Hirondelles. When you think of caves you probably think dark and dank. But in Les Hirondelles, this is not the case as there are two large arched openings facing south and so the apartment enjoys full sunlight all day. Finally, the fact that the apartment is located in the village was another reason that swayed our decision. It's very conveniently located for the grocery store, the post office, the bakery etc. And, while it's very conveniently situated to everything the fact that the building is built on a hill allows us to have access to all of the village amenities but still have a very private and secluded retreat from the world.

We loved it! My wife and I loved the property. It is right in the heart of the village. Parking is readily available nearby. The property is large. It is bigger than we expected. The outdoor patio is quite large and has a great view. The dining room is a sun room plus their are two bedrooms. Krissy was a huge help meeting us there and providing advice. We highly recommend this property.
The centrality, view & privacy were greatly appreciated. The agent was very helpful & contactable. Property amenities were wonderful. Local restaurants need to book AND definitely cancel if necessary!
We enjoyed a wonderful stay in this nice Apartment. Wonderful small village.
We had a lovely stay in this beautiful rental located in the friendly village of Menerbes. It’s an ideal location for visiting neighboring villages. Beautiful vistas, delicious food, and welcoming ambiance.
Great to have you as guests, and delighted that you enjoyed your stay.
This property was highlight of our trip! Our family of 4 (2 girls ages 11 & 15) loved this apartment. From pizza restaurant on one side and Epicurie on the other side, it was perfect location. Krissy the manager of property was so responsive and helpful even provided help when we had a flat tire. The village of Menerbes is fantastic and views from deck are beautiful. We really enjoyed the great kitchen, washing machine and modern/updated bathrooms. Plenty of storage and books and games provided kept us entertained on quiet nights after dinner. You must try Bistro 5 in village as well with stunning views and delicious food in fun environment. We thought the tuna steak was excellent! We cannot wait to return!
Glad you enjoyed you all enjoyed your stay.
A lovely flat in Ménerbes
Les Hirondelles is a charming, comfortable and interesting pied-à-terre in the center of the lovely village of Ménerbes.
The owner, Jackie, and the property manager, Krissy, made the rental easy and problem free.
We loved every aspect of our stay.
I'm glad you had a nice time Mary. Hope to host you again sometime.
Hilltop Villages nearby:
Goult: Perched on a hill with a solitary road to the peak. Near the end of the road is a 12th-century castle, the Chateau de Goult and a windmill. Be sure to make time for lunch or a drink at Café de la Post in Goult.
Oppede le Vieux: The old village built on a rocky hill has narrow streets and is mostly deserted. There is a church and a castle at the top of the hill. The view from the top is worth the climb.
Bonnieux: Dating back to Roman times, it rests on top of the Luberon hills casting a watchful gaze across the rest of the valley. Again, the view from the top of the village is well worth the trudge up the hill.
Lacoste: A picturesque hilltop village overlooking the village of Bonnieux on one side and the Grand Luberon Mountains to the east, and flanked by Mont Ventoux to the north, and the Petit Luberon to the south. It's where you'll find the castle that belonged to the Marquis de Sade.
Gordes: This is an imposing hilltop village in a beautiful setting. However, it can be very windy.
Rousillon: This hilltop village is famous for its ochre and the colors in the rocks will just blow you away. Lots of art available in this village.
Monday: Goult in the afternoon
Tuesday: Gordes and Lacoste
Thursday: Menerbes - you'll only have to walk out your door to enjoy this market.
Saturday: Apt - can be crowded, so get there early.
Sunday: Coustellet - this is the best produce market in the area.
