About Jackie Ghiara

Jackie and I (Hugo) met and married while living in New York City in 1990. I'm from Cordoba, Argentina and she's from Waterford, Ireland. We moved to Europe in 1998 and we currently live on a small farm in the South East of Ireland.

Jackie Ghiara purchased this apartment in 2013

Why Jackie Ghiara chose Ménerbes

We purchased in this area because of its location, history and charm.

Where I grew up we had a similar climate and I just love spending time in Provence as it feels very familiar to me... but it's a lot easier to travel here a few times a year rather than trekking all the way to Argentina.

Jackie loves it here too, again because of the weather. Living in Ireland we get more than our fair share of rain. So, we look forward to spending time in Provence where we know that the sun will shine most days.

What attracted us to Menerbes was curiosity about Dora Maar, Picassos's companion and muse. He bought a house in Menerbes in 1944 and ended up gifting it to Dora when they separated. She was an artist and photographer and spent the latter part of her life living in Menerbes. Her house is currently an artist and writers retreat.

What we discovered when we visited was that Dora wasn't the only artist who called Menerbes home. The village was also home to artists; Nicolas de Stael, Joe Downing and Jane Eakin, none of whom are still alive... but that fact gives you an idea of how tranquil and beautiful a place Menerbes is.

Another reason for choosing this area is its location. It's very close to Marseille airport (Marignane 50 minutes) and also close to Nice, just a 2 hour drive away.

And, locally the village is well located to visit and enjoy the many hilltop villages such as Oppede Le Vieux, Gordes, Goult, Joucaste, LaCoste, Roussillon.

Menerbes is just a short 20-minute drive to Apt where you can enjoy the weekly Saturday market. And for more general shopping and larger stores we're just 40 minutes from the beautiful city of Avignon.

What makes this apartment unique

The property really captivated us because we both love old buildings and we also value our privacy and this property comes with a lot of history and is also very private.

The apartment is made up of two interconnected caves which we think were originally used for housing animals and later used as the village laundry. The previous owner renovated the caves from a ruined state and turned them into a very comfortable retreat from the world.

In addition what made us fall for this property was the fact that it had a private terrace and great views out onto the Luberon.

In Menerbes, it's very difficult to find a property in the village that also has outdoor space and a view, but we managed to get everything we were looking for all wrapped up in... Les Hirondelles.

When you think of caves you probably think dark and dank. But in Les Hirondelles, this is not the case as there are two large arched openings facing south and so the apartment enjoys full sunlight all day.

Finally, the fact that the apartment is located in the village was another reason that swayed our decision. It's very conveniently located for the grocery store, the post office, the bakery etc.

And, while it's very conveniently situated to everything the fact that the building is built on a hill allows us to have access to all of the village amenities but still have a very private and secluded retreat from the world.

Notes:
The apartment is located within the same building as the epicerie (grocery store) so it's very convenient for stocking up on fresh fruit and vegetables as well as a nice selection of regional foods, including local cheeses. Also, there is a provencal market held every Thursday morning in Menerbes. You can buy salamis and an assortment of meats from the butcher. You'll also find an excellent cheese counter, fresh olives and breads. Of course there are many fine vineyards in the areas and a visit to Le Musee de la Truffe is a must while staying in Menerbes. You can buy all sorts of truffle- related items such as truffle oil, truffle pate, truffle slicer etc., and in addition there is a very good selection of local wines available in the cellar of Le Musee. No visit to Menerbes is complete without a trip to the top of the village where the Musee de la Truffe is found.

Perfect place for comfort, view and unique ambience!

  • 5 of 5

We spent 5 days at this beautiful apartment in the heart of Menerbes. The four of us (2 couples) were very comfortable with our separate bedrooms. The expansive view from our private terrace was outstanding and furnished with ample furniture. Plus, the hillside town of Menerbes is a great place to walk, explore and dine.

Great location

  • 4 of 5

Having spent a week with friends at this place I would recommend it if you want to be in the centre of a quaint village in Provence. The views were great and the accommodation was comfortable for the two couples. An easy location to visit the other villages in the area. Restaurants were also nice in the village.

Stunning comfortable apartment - A great base to explore the Luberon.

  • 5 of 5

This apartment is a delight and looks exactly as the pictures on the Homeaway site.

We are very particular when choosing accommodation and were very happy with our choice this cute apartment. The apartment was lovely and clean which I noted straight away. The bedding was comfortable, the kitchen was well equipped and it had all the amenities for making our stay comfortable. The location of this apartment is perfect for a stay in the Luberon as it is central to all other villages and places of interest.

The restaurants are great and we spent many nights during our 8 days at the local favourite Le 5 Bistro (divine views at sunset). My memories will be of the fresh croissants that we collected early every morning from the bakery right below. (I could tell by the smell wafting up that they were ready)

We will be back next year when we come back for our daughters wedding and hope to be able to stay here again.

My only disappointment was that the deck was so hot in the afternoon we could not enjoy an evening drink out there in the hot sun. (It was an extremely hot week for May!)

Thank you Jackie for a memorable stay.

Well kept. Lots of character with the stone walls etc. Bright and airy. Both bedrooms are large. V comfortable. We had 2 weeks of sunny weather so the view everyday was wonderful! So many great restaurants to choose from either in Menerbes or surrounds.

Owner's Response: Thank you Carl, it was a pleasure to have you stay. I agree the view from the terrace is spectacular...it's a great place to start your day with a cup of coffee and also a great place to end your day with a glass of wine as you watch the sun set. Jackie

Quiet, private apartment with a great view of mountain village and countryside

  • 5 of 5

Menerbe is tucked away in the Luberon countryside, a beautiful village less heavily trafficked by tourists than other towns partly because it's a bit hard to find. You need a small scale map to find it listed and there are few signs to it until you're almost there. The area is quite peaceful with vineyards and Provence style houses everywhere. The apartment is well furnished and the glass front, including a large terrace, looks out over the valley below. From the terrace you also get a nice view of the village off to the right, with some facades lit up at night; the terrace faces west so you also have a nice view of sunsets. We enjoyed staying in the village, taking walks and visiting one night the Cafe Progres, where the locals hang out and welcomed us warmly. Had a nice chat in English about movies and politics with Daniel, who if you meet please say hi for us.

Exceptional - Unique - Beautiful

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful one week stay at 'Les Hirondelles'. The contact and support in advance by the owners was great. Krissy, the nice property manager, was waiting for us and gave us all the helpful advices about the apartment. You'll feel instantly like 'home'! The photos on the internet are beautiful - reality is ever better! Clean, very beautiful designed and tastefully decorated. For me as an interior designer an outstanding achievement. There is nothing what you would miss. ...and the terrace with the view over the Lubéron is great.

Ménerbes is probably the most beautiful village in the region - quiet, authentic, not overcrowded like Gordes, Roussillon, etc., but with all the amenities you won't miss. Especially the Restaurant 'Les Saveurs Gourmandes', the épicerie and the boulangerie next to the apartment.

It is simply recommended. The holiday remains best remembered. We would love to come back!

And thank you for the Rosé, Jackie!

Hilltop Villages nearby:

Goult: Perched on a hill with a solitary road to the peak. Near the end of the road is a 12th-century castle, the Chateau de Goult and a windmill. Be sure to make time for lunch or a drink at Café de la Post in Goult.

Oppede le Vieux: The old village built on a rocky hill has narrow streets and is mostly deserted. There is a church and a castle at the top of the hill. The view from the top is worth the climb.

Bonnieux: Dating back to Roman times, it rests on top of the Luberon hills casting a watchful gaze across the rest of the valley. Again, the view from the top of the village is well worth the trudge up the hill.

Lacoste: A picturesque hilltop village overlooking the village of Bonnieux on one side and the Grand Luberon Mountains to the east, and flanked by Mont Ventoux to the north, and the Petit Luberon to the south. It's where you'll find the castle that belonged to the Marquis de Sade.

Gordes: This is an imposing hilltop village in a beautiful setting. However, it can be very windy.

Rousillon: This hilltop village is famous for its ochre and the colors in the rocks will just blow you away. Lots of art available in this village.

Provencal Markets:

Monday: Goult in the afternoon

Tuesday: Gordes and Lacoste

Wednesday: Merindol

Thursday: Menerbes - you'll only have to walk out your door to enjoy this market.

Friday: Bonnieux

Saturday: Apt - can be crowded, so get there early.

Sunday: Coustellet - this is the best produce market in the area.

Antique Markets:

Ilse Sur La Sorgue
