About the property

21 Castella's Lane, 2 Bed, 2 Bath Cottage, Private Deck on N Atlantic Cliffs

RedHouseNL, 21 Castella's Lane, is a lovely, cozy oceanfront cottage perched on the cliffs of Pouch Cove Newfoundland, overlooking the N Atlantic. Upstairs it offers 2 bedrooms (queen beds) with incredible ocean views, a small sitting area for coffee or reading with a view and a full bathroom with tub/shower. Downstairs is a fully equipped kitchen, living room with wood burning stove, a 'study' with books and a full sized futon which can fold out for a 5th guest, and a second bathroom off the study with a stall shower. The living room is bright, open and spacious, offering incredible ocean views. Off the side of the living room is a dining room with big rustic table great for meals, games and dare I say work?!

The House also has a large deck off the back, with 4 Adirondack chairs to enjoy the scenery and perhaps catch a glimpse of whales and dolphins cruising by. A side deck off the dining room is equipped with 2 lounge chairs for more of the same!

Steps from East Coast Trail. Short drive to local beaches. 25 minute drive to downtown St John's.

Why Chris Rutkowski chose Canada

This property is special and you will understand the minute you walk inside. The view of the ocean is mesmerizing! From the vastness of the water to the waves crashing on the cliffs, you will not be able to look away! The sunrises are spectacular along with the occasional whale sightings, many different birds and of course icebergs. Even at night, when it is totally dark, you can hear and feel the ocean. The fresh ocean air is wonderful!

What makes this cottage unique

The house is extremely cozy and comfortable inside. I like the winter season the best with the wood stove going and watching it snow outside. It's a great escape! During the summer, the back deck is the place to be. Four adirondack chairs facing the ocean keep you and your favourite beverage occupied for hours!

This was a home away from home - but better!

  • 5 of 5

There is nothing like lying in bed and seeing the stars touch the horizon then waking up with the sun rising over the sea. Our stay was worry free because Chris thought of everything when setting up this perfeect holiday home.

The location was great for getting into St John's or anywhere else on the Peninsula for the day and coming home for the evening. We stayed warm despite the cold wind whipping around us because there is no shortage of heating throughout and on a mild morning at the end of September we took our first breakfast on the porch and listened to the waves crashing below.

Every person we met was kind and lovely, I encourage anyone to stay here to have a taste of this beauty.

Perfect week on the East Coast

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I loved staying in this meticulous, bright, spacious and gorgeous oceanfront. The owner greeted us personally and generously answered all our questions via email before arrival, and was responsive to our requests during our stay. We used the house as a base for hiking chunks of the east coast trail, and it was a great location for that endeavor. A great place to wake up and enjoy breakfast on the deck with the sunrise, and a great place to come back to after a day of hiking. We made good use of the well- outfitted kitchen for making dinners and loved dining in as the view from the dining room (the view from all the rooms, in fact) was priceless. We saw whales a few times from the deck, even though it was later in the whale season, and so enjoyed the blueberries that grow on the property and seemingly everywhere in Newfoundland. We would definitely recommend !

Piece of Paradise in Pouch Cove

  • 5 of 5

Our family of four had the pleasure of staying in this beautiful home for a week in early August. We are mom, dad, 14 year old, and 12 year old (kids shared the upstairs second bedroom). The Red House is just far enough away from St. John's to be remote without taking hours to get to it at the end of big days. There are great grocery stores in on Torbay Road just outside of St. John's (the one in Torbay itself is much smaller but still good) to get your provisions. The house seemed large compared to the photos - great entryway for all of our coats and shoes, comfortable living room with ocean-watching windows. The kitchen is big and directly behind the living room so it has the same ocean-viewing windows. Kitchen had everything - permanent coffee filter, every pot and pan we needed, well working stove and oven, toaster, etc. The dining room table was perfect for meals and cards and trip planning. Lots of windows to let the breezes in. The bedrooms were wonderful - extremely comfortable beds and lots of storage. The second bedroom has a closet for hanging stuff up, too. The upstairs bathroom was spacious and well-stocked with plenty of nice bath, hand, and wash towels, and bathmats. In most rooms you have complete privacy and you have spectacular views! We spent a lot of time on the decks in the mornings and evenings. We saw lots of humpbacks, shooting stars, and beautiful birds. We stayed home one great weather day (we only had rain one day) and hiked the East Coast Trail to Cape St. Francis It was so great to have Chris meet us at the house upon our arrival - he showed us around and obviously takes great pride in his home. The room with the futon in it is a very sweet room - off the living room, it has doors to keep it private and is adjacent to the downstairs bathroom. Having one or two people in this room would be very comfortable, I think. Also, nice window with great views from this room. There is nice bookshelf with lots of paperbacks (i left one; took one :)) and many guidebooks. A perfect home, lots of privacy, way "out there" but still close enough. We hope to return!!

Perfect

  • 5 of 5

This is a great place to stay in NL, close enough to St John's but still in a world of its own. The view is amazing, and the house is comfortable and has all you need to live well for a stay. We saw whales from the deck on three days of our vacation. Couldn't recommend this place enough.

The RedHouse is the essence of beauty & charm with a dramatic backdrop.

  • 5 of 5

Our recent stay at the RedHouse was everything we could have hoped for! The house itself was a compelling blend of a charming, rustic, artsy, traditional Newfoundland cottage. Every room had a view & the decor & art was given much thought.

The grounds.....amazing! We spent hours on the deck whale watching and gazing at the ever changing skies. The East Coast trail is right there for hearty hikes with dramatic views.

Chris (the owner) was charismatic, gracious & thoughtful:). Thank-you!

We loved our stay at the RedHouse!

Incredible house with the perfect location

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic house . The location could not be more perfect. Made us feel like we were on the edge of the earth looking out at the ocean. Chris made us feel welcome from the moment we arrived . The extra touches were a real bonus. Incredible view of the sea from every room in the house including the bedrooms. Enjoyed our time on the deck every morning and evening. House was spotless and very well equipped. Getting the print of the house framed. What a perfect momento
