About Roger and Donna Shipley

God has blessed us with our lifelong dream of having a place of our own in the mountains to enjoy His creation. Free Spirit Cabin is the perfect place to quiet your soul and free your spirit to experience all the beauty of nature and the serenity that it holds. We are so happy to be able to share this peaceful place with you.

Roger and Donna Shipley purchased this cabin in 2012

Why Roger and Donna Shipley chose East

Free Spirit is located on the summit of a ridge line which has a unique quality of it's own. On the ridge, it is quiet most of the time. There is usually a breeze blowing through the trees in the forest surrounding the open deck. After a good rain, a waterfall down below will sound off to provide a tranquil departure from the usual quiet. At night the sky opens up from the deck for star gazing in our zero gravity chairs and in the morning the birds call for meditating in quiet solitude. All this preparing you for a inspirational hike in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park just a short distance away.

What makes this cabin unique

The access to Free Spirit Cabin is only three steps up to the deck from the driveway.

The capacity of 5-6 people includes a king bed downstairs, queen bed upstairs, and futon in the loft. Each bedroom has it's own jacuzzi tub and full bathroom with shower/tub.

Sky Harbor is conveniently located between Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge making both within just a few minutes drive. Dollywood is so close you can occasionally hear the train whistle from the locomotive. There is also a back way to Dollywood, Pigeon Forge, Gatlinburg, the Arts and Crafts Community and a bypass to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park from Sky Harbor to avoid heavy traffic. Our laminated map shows how to get to both places and a few other shortcuts and bypasses around the area.

The Great Smoky Mountains are now a second home to us. Something we have always dreamed of. When we hike these mountains, our hearts tune in to the essence of the Love of God. The serene forests, the beautiful waterfalls, and views from the top of the world have brought us closer to God and has shown us the 'peace that surpasses understanding' when we are in these beautiful mountains. We have tried to channel that peace through our blessing from God we call Free Spirit. It is our greatest desire to share that peace with our guests through the spiritual theme of our cabin. God's love flows more freely through a vessel open to receive his love. We hope Free Spirit can assist in your quest to find His Peace, His Joy and His Love.

Comfortable, Convenient, and Complete!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay at Free Spirit Cabin was very comfortable with a jacuzzi tub in each bedroom and a large deck to enjoy Mother Nature.

The cabin is between Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, so it is not far from either. There is even a bypass around Gatlinburg to the National Park which got us there in 20 minutes.

Everything we needed was provided. Towels, kitchen utensils, a washer and dryer, and even an ice-maker in the freezer were available. The pool table was great as well as the hot tub. Charter Cable was on every TV with a parental code for the little ones.

A great place to come home to after a shopping spree, a trip to Dollywood, or a relaxing trip into the Smokies.

We will be back.

Peaceful, relaxing and beautiful

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed the cabin it was very inviting and comfortable, decorated with taste, the beds were comfortable and there was plenty to do however sitting on the deck was by far our favorite the view is spectacular and the lack of noises was beyond anything we could have asked for. We would definitely recommend this cabin and we ourselves would love to go back thank you so much Roger and Donna for allowing us to enjoy you are Little Piece of Heaven on Earth. It was super easy access to the National Park along with Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your stay and your generous review of our cabin. We also love the "quiet" that exists on top of the ridge. The wind is nice when it does blow through the trees. The birds are fascinating to hear mainly in the mornings. There is even a waterfall that roars after a good rain. But to sit on the deck and just hear nothing, is priceless. Thank you for bringing that back to mind. We are glad you enjoyed your stay and hope to see you back soon.

Beautifully decorated mountain cabin that met all our needs!!

  • 5 of 5

This is mountain living, I really enjoyed staying at Free Spirit!! It is a great cabin!! I didn't know what to expect about driving to the cabin, the 1st drive up was a little scary with the elevation and no barriers on one side, but the road is paved and after going up and down a couple times I felt more comfortable. The cabin had all the amenities that we needed. There was a full kitchen but we chose to eat out more and have leftovers. They thought of everything from extra chairs, TV trays, TVs in the living room and each bedroom plus in the pool table room, BBQ grill, hot tub, candles, labels and directions where needed, etc. We enjoyed having 2 master suites!! After a day in town we just wanted to each enjoy our own jacuzzi in our rooms. We used Apple Maps to get us around town and we had no problem with Verizon reception and the cabin's wifi was faster than our own. There are a couple trees that have acorns and when the acorns fall on the metal roof it makes a very large scary thud and then rolls down and thuds on the porch. FYI clock in dining room makes bird calls on the hour and we thought birds were landing on back porch.

The cabin is very close to downtown Gatlinburg and downtown Pigeon Forge. We had a chance to go to Ripley's Aquarium, Ripley's Odditorium, Dolly Parton's Dixie Stampede, drive up to Klingman's Dome, Salt & Pepper Shaker Museum, eat BBQ at Bennett's (each downtown had one & I recommend the burnt ends, sooo good!), enjoyed shopping in the Villages Mall (got some bubble bath, cinnamon bread, cold chai latte, check out Life Is Good for some t's for you or you dog, Lazy Ones has the coolest pajamas and there is a sock store too!). We did ride the trolley a bit, you can pay $2 for a day pass for most of the lines. We also enjoyed taking the tram up to the top of the mountain where there was more shopping and restaurants. The scenery is amazing whether you are on the top of the mountain, your cabin's porch or from town looking up, driving with your window down to not miss an amazing photograph. It was nice to keep running across the Little Pigeon River and look at its beauty. When we got here on October 16th I thought we would be in the middle of the color change but it was a little late this year and we could get better pics of it driving through the Smokies toward Asheville. We did not get to experience Dollywood or her splash water park or the 8 mile artist colony drive, need another trip to Free Spirit!

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for your amazing review of our cabin. You certainly pointed out the reason we love to share our home with those who appreciate it. You pointed out the many things to do in the area. And how close Free Spirit is to everything. Sorry you missed the peak of the leaves. It is hard to predict exactly when Mother Nature will show off her beauty. Looking forward to your visit next time in order to see all other attractions you missed this time.
