Lovely large private suite, family- friendly, private sandy beach 20 steps from the door! Floor to ceiling windows throughout giving panoramic views towards the open Pacific, Lennard Island Lighthouse and Tonquin Beach. The new Tonquin Trail begins at the end of Tonquin beach and leads through virgin rainforest, platform lookouts over Templar Channel and two more beautiful sandy beaches. The UNESCO Biosphere of Clayoquot Sound is at your doorstep. Discover the story behind the wreck of the Tonquin!

The three bedroom, two bathroom suite, large living room, dining room, with hand adzed beams, wood-burning fireplace, and sundeck create an ambiance not replicated in other Tofino homes. The living area is spacious enough for games, the fireplace, and flat screen TV. The dining room table has space for 8 comfortably. A large south facing sundeck wraps around the three bedrooms, overlooking Tonquin Beach. At the main entrance, there is a small covered deck with large barb-b-que.

Following the steps down to the beach on a short trail, there is a beautiful pocket sandy beach, perfect for sunsets, outdoor beach games or a hot dog roast. A long beach walk can be enjoyed from the private beach to Tonquin Beach and beyond at low tide. Tonquin Beach is a hidden treasure, with cultural history, scenic coves, and a natural freshwater pool perfect for young children to enjoy. We also have a trampoline on the property that is available with supervision ! For those interested in fishing, you can fish right off the rocks in front of the house at high tide !

If you prefer, you can walk the 1 km. road into town to enjoy an evening meal or go shopping.

We have boogy boards available to borrow at no extra cost! Enjoy the simple Tofino experience of surfing, fishing, and hiking and eating at the best restaurants on Vancouver Island ! We will provide all the information you need to make your experience here memorable!

About Cathy Thicke

We bought our house in 1989, and began doing Bed and Breakfast in Tofino in 1990, as one of only 5 homes to do so. In 1998 we converted the main floor of the large house into a private vacation rental suite, allowing guests to share our experience of living 'on the beach'. My husband works at the hospital in Tofino, as a physician, and I serve on the District of Tofino Council, Tonquin Trail Committee, and the Clayoquot Biosphere Trust.

Cathy Thicke purchased this house in 1989

Why Cathy Thicke chose Vancouver Island

We chose this property for its 1.3 acre south and west facing beachfront, and its proximity to town and the local hospital! It is a very unique property, with two beaches, hiking trail, great kayaking, 'supping' opportunities, whale watching, breath-taking sunsets, and the best low tide viewing on the Tofino coastline. You can even surf on Tonquin Beach in the winter! The sunsets here are sublime!

What makes this house unique

Beach walking, Tonquin Trail through old growth rainforest and sandy beaches, SUP-ing, kayaking, fishing from beach ( June to September ), whale watching from the beach in front, surfing, storm-watching, trampoline on property, and to finish- Tofino has many Canadian culinary delights ! ( Sobo, Tacofino and Shelter are our favourites!)

Perfect place to enjoy Tofino and the Pacific Northwest

  • 5 of 5

Cathy was a great host - the property had everything you'd need - including beach access, fireplace + outdoor pit with wood!, kids toys and books, and easy walking access to hiking trails and all the delicious food that tofino has to offer.

I stayed with my wife, parents and 3 young kids (1,4,7) and we had plenty of space, were comfortable when inside or playing on the property.

We were even lucky enough to see grey whales passing by one evening around sunset!

Please dont book this place - I will be back and want to ensure availability ;)

site d'exception

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5

Walk to restaurants and town, to hiking trails , to beaches and then return to your fully equipped, super comfortable and spacious home....downstairs, ground level but 14 ft ceilings in the living area! And it's very of all the beach off the accommodation is private. Highly recommended.

Best location ever!

  • 5 of 5

My husband, 9-year old daughter and I stayed here for 3 nights at the end of May and our only complaint was that we didn't have more time! The house overlooks two private beaches and there is a short walkway down to the larger one, where we ate picnic-style breakfasts and dinners and soaked in the gorgeous scenery (complete with eagles soaring above). The house was comfortable and our host, Cathy, left delicious croissants for us the first morning. She was also extremely helpful in recommending things to do and restaurants. The kitchen was adequately equipped and she took the time to show us how to operate the oven. I also appreciated the "to go" coffee cups so we could enjoy a hot beverage on the beach. The house is a short walk into town and is also adjacent to the start of the Tonquin Trail, which is a must do. There is even a trampoline for kids (and kids at heart). We have stayed in many vacation rentals and this one really stood out as one of our favorites! Highly recommended!

Owner's Response: Thank you ! It was a delight to have you here. The Tonquin Trail is certainly one of my favourite trails on the coast, through mostly virgin rain forest, and will soon be completed to Middle Beach ! The Tonquin started from New York in 1810, but met its demise here in Clayoquot Sound, so there are American historical connections.

Lovely home on the beach

  • 4 of 5

Our family really enjoyed our stay at On the beach. Having laundry was a bonus in the stormy weather we had. Beds were amazing too.

The oven took at lot of patience to figure out.

The owners were away but the caretaker greeted us when we arrived but unfortunately did not see her when we left our last morning to say goodbye and to make sure we had closed everything up well.

Great experience overall!

Owner's Response: Thank you. We were sorry to miss you on this occasion- we don't go away often! I will make sure the oven has a three step process posted. Sorry but this oven thinks like a computer ! Cathy

Tofino is a beautiful small town on the west coast of Vancouver Island. It is known as the Surf Capital of Canada, with the average age of 34! Tofino is in the midst of the Clayoquot Biosphere Reserve, a world -reknowned UNESCO designation. There are less than 600 Biosphere Reserves in the world and 16 are located in Canada. Tofino is adjacent to the Pacific Rim National Park, Provincial Parks, Tribal Parks, and in a World reknowned shorebird flyway. Tonquin Beach, a municipal park is adjacent to the house. The Tonquin Trail is at the top of the driveway, 2 kilometer trail, with spectacular views over the Clayoquot Sound Biosphere, and the wreck of the Tonquin ( 45 min. round trip). At low tides, Tonquin Beach is the best beach in the area for tidal pool viewing. Whales, eagles, and fish abound and may be seen from the sundeck or beach in the spring and summer. Tofino is the best place to learn to surf in Canada ! There are many stores providing lessons, with Surf Sister generally thought to be the best. Whale watching or bear watching by boat is also an option, with Remote Passages offering family packages. Sobo restaurant, only 1 km. away offers very healthy food at affordable prices ( child friendly menu), and the best margaritas in Canada! There is bear watching, sport fishing, hiking, beaches galore, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, and culinary delights in this small jewel of a town.
