About Allen and Sherita Manen

Allen and I were high school sweethearts and were married a month after my high school graduation. We lived on Cave Mountain, just up the road from the famous Hawksbill Crag, for several years before purchasing this land that is now home to Saddleback Lodge. The land was raw with no road access, water, or electric. We built our dream home in 2007 and Allen has worked to make it what it is today. God has blessed us with three beautiful daughters and their families which consist of six grandchildren.

Allen and Sherita Manen purchased this lodge in 2000

Why Allen and Sherita Manen chose Ponca

This area has always been home for me. Both sets of my Grandparents were born in what is now known as the Buffalo National River Park. My 24 year old Maternal Grandpa married the love of his life when she was 15 and moved her into a 16x16 cabin which he had built on the River in 1927. The partial foundation and chimney still marks the location of this home site. My dad walked across the Buffalo River every weekend to date my mom. Saddleback Lodge is our dream home, but was built late in life when our kids were almost ready to leave the nest. We love our family get-togethers here, but now want to share this wonderful home with you.

What makes this lodge unique

Saddleback Lodge features Spruce Pine Logs, Native Stone, Cedar, and Aspen throughout the 6000 square foot structure. It offers many unique benefits, such as complete privacy, wood-burning fireplace, large game room, open fire pit, on-site hiking trail to the majestic waterfall, and the beautiful view from the back porch.

Annual Family holiday gathering

  • 5 of 5

Saddleback lodge is located in a beautiful, private, quiet, lovely valley that allowed our family excellent hiking and wandering in the beauty of nature. The lodge itself was very comfortable for our extended family to play games and relax together. There were plenty of comfortable beds and sleeping areas for all ages.

The kitchen had plenty of utensils and pans for cooking. There was ample space for food storage and personal items. The owners made us feel like we stepped into our own home.

We enjoyed the upstairs so much we hardly used the game facilities in the downstairs location.

We definitely will return to this dream home.

Perfect setting for our group. Plenty to do, but just us! No other distractions around.

  • 4 of 5

This setting was just great for us. The living room, cozy, yet enough seating for all 15 of us. The play room kept our kids ages 10 to 18 really entertained with foosball, air hockey, pool table and ping pong! Our guys had lots of fun playing soccer and football in back yard and the 10 & 11 yr olds loved pond and the paddle boats as well as the chickens. The kitchen was well equipped and had the added benefit of an adjacent utility room with more counter tops, an additional sink and plenty of electrical outlets so even our big Thanksgiving meal didn't over tax it all. Sheritta was a very attentive owner. BUT the best part was how self contained we were. No other distraction to pull us away from enjoying each other. Beautiful Buffalo River wilderness provides great hiking and running trails. Thank you!

Quiet retreat in the Ozarks

  • 4 of 5

This house is in a beautiful spot away from the noise of any roads. The living space was huge with plenty of room for our family of 20 to spend time together. There were adequate beds for everyone. The only drawback in the sleeping arrangement is that there are 2 queen beds in the upstairs space that lack privacy for sleeping in. Once the loud (older) members of our family got up for coffee there was no way for the people in the loft to sleep anymore. The kitchen was somewhat small for 20 people. The large livingroom made up for the lack of kitchen space and there is a large laundry room off the kitchen that provides extra counter and storage space. The property was clean and well-maintained. The owners were the perfect combination of being available if we needed something but leaving us to our privacy. I would recommend this property to anyone who wants a quiet get away out of the city. We enjoyed kayaking and hiking nearby trails. The remoteness doesn't lend itself to going to Jasper to pick up supplies or going to restaurants often.

Relaxation at it's best! Love this area!

  • 5 of 5

Went with a group of friends and family. Close to hiking and Elk. Caught fish in the lake, watched deer in the field, & listed to coyotes in the distance. Told stories and danced around the fire pit and enjoyed talking with the owners. Great Weekend!

Girl's trip

  • 5 of 5

I, along with 7 other women, had a wonderful weekend at Saddleback Lodge. The lodge and surrounding land were wonderful - spacious, clean, great views of the Ozark hills and fall trees, amazing sunsets and star-filled sky... And Allen and Sherita couldn't have been more welcoming and accommodating. We felt like we were right at home and had made new friends. Thank you for welcoming us into your home.

Reconnect with your loved ones by visiting the Buffalo National River Park, America's first National River. The River flows 135 miles through the majestic Ozark Mountains and offers many outdoor adventures. Canoe the river, explore the trails, drive the scenic routes, or view the famous Arkansas Elk herd in the Boxley Valley. Saddleback Lodge is in the heart of the Upper Buffalo National River Park and just minutes from where the River flows through the historic Boxley Valley. Floating the Buffalo is fun and exciting, but the adventures don't stop there. Allow the Upper Trails to take you to historic home sites and numerous waterfalls, including the most popular, Lost Valley; most photographed Arkansas Landmark, Hawksbill Crag; or the highest waterfall between the Rockies and the Appalachians, Hemmed in Hollow at 204 feet.
