About the property

4 Bedroom + Sitting Room W/twin, 3.5 Baths, Waterfront, Double Boathouse, WiFi

Dragonfly is perfectly outfitted for a family trip or get-together with friends. We include TWO 10' KAYAKS with paddles for our guests to use! These would rent for $55/day each at local marinas, which is a huge savings in a week!! (Kayaks provided in mild climate and warm weather, late spring-fall.) We ALSO have fun water sports equipment available to rent, just inquire! Typically, we can offer two stand-on paddleboards and a water bouncer with attached slide. Kids of all ages LOVE them!

Our home is located on Great Creek, about 1 mile north of Route 903 in Bracey, VA, on Lake Gaston. The house is just 1 mile from the local Holly Grove Marina and 2 miles from the lovely area award-winning winery! There is a nearby bar and grill you can drive or boat to, and they offer live music and other fun events. The water, location and amenities are ideal for families.

We have complimentary WiFi, dedicated flatscreen TV for Wii gaming system, Satellite TV's (4), 55 inch flat screen in basement gaming room, flat screen in living room, Blu-Rays (2), DVD (1), TWO Kayaks with paddles (ask about other water sports available for rent), Verizon cell signal extender, Bluetooth stereo, large outdoor deck with outdoor dining area with patio umbrella and separate seating area, grill, double boat house w/1 covered slip available for guests and other spots to tie up additional boats or jet-skis, covered dining table on the dock, mini-fridge on dock, quiet swimming at the house with large adjacent open water for tubing or water skiing so kids can swim without traffic and the benefit of open water right there for big water sports, foosball table, indoor basketball hoop, outdoor full size basketball hoop, ping pong table, board games, highchair/pack-n-play/step stools for those traveling with little ones, chaise lounges, fire pit with benches, fully equipped kitchen w/gas range, granite counters, seated dining in the kitchen and dining room indoors, open living room/dining room floor plan, wood burning fireplace, Rinnai hot water heater for endless hot water (all four showers can be run at the same time without running out of hot water!), parking for 4-6 cars, 2-car attached garage for bikes, flat concrete driveway area for playing ball or riding scooters, and corn hole! We also have a special fishing license for all of our guests to be able to fish directly off of our dock without the need for their own separate licenses! That saves you $60/pp and you can fish to your heart's content right at the house! Amenities may change. Feel free to inquire.

The deck on the dock has both shaded areas under cover and a sunny deck area for drying off or soaking up some rays. The deck on the house gets afternoon sun and is nicely shaded for morning coffee and dinners at the outdoor dining table. The dock boards were all recently replaced, you will find this is one of the nicest boat houses around!

There are two boat ramps nearby, each less than a mile from the house. One is a private gated neighborhood ramp just for our community and our guests, the other is Holly Grove Marina just south of Highway 903. We are convenient to markets and gas.

We have redone so many features of the home with fantastic upgrades including new decking on the dock, new outdoor furniture and lovely interior upgrades. One of us is an architect/certified interior designer and the house is stylish with a classic and comfortable updated vibe keeping comfort and family function in mind! There are so many gathering spaces in this home, everyone will find a comfortable and favorite spot. Kids and adults can have their own areas to watch different movies or play while the adults visit. Kids LOVE the bunk room and the fun themed video game area. Many homes will advertise they are 5 bedrooms, but they do not have TWO living areas for families and friends to enjoy different movies or give the kids their own space to hang out. This house is made for indoor and outdoor fun for all ages!

The water at our spot on the lake will warm up faster than the main lake, extending our season. It is also lovely and calm where we are even when the main lake is choppy. However, we still have the benefits of wider water views, the convenience of a space right by the house for letting loose with the motor boat and having fun tubing/water skiing, and the main lake is just minutes away. It's the best of both worlds!

**Memorial Day/JULY 4TH HOLIDAY/Labor Day: There are many special events including fireworks for July 4th and live concerts close by for these holidays. The local winery has dinners with wine pairings at various times of the year.

The bed count is:

2 kings (1 California king and 1 Eastern standard king), 1 queen, 1 double, 3 twins and 2 twin air mattresses, 1 loveseat that flips out to a queen sized mattress, plus additional full size sofas (not sleeper sofas).

Guests provide their own linens, towels, paper products and soaps/shampoos.

Sheet rental is available.

5 BR (4BR + Sitting Room connected to the Master)/ 3.5 Baths, Sleeps 13-16*. We have comforters and pillows for all rooms, with allergy covers on the mattresses and pillows. The beds each have either a pillow top mattress or mattress topper for added comfort. The Master bedroom, Guest Room 1 and Guest Room 3 each have views of the lake.

Master - California King size bed with attached sitting room/vanity area with additional twin bed. There is a privacy door between the master and the sitting room. Off of the sitting area is a closed shower/toilet/sink area, but there is also a second sink vanity with great counter space and tub/shower in the main vanity area.

Guest Room 1 - Queen

Upstairs Guest Bath - Separate full bath upstairs with tub/shower, and lots of counter space.

Main Floor:

Guest Room 2 - Twin over Full size bunk with twin trundle. Stairs, not a ladder, go up to the bunk! This is a favorite hangout for kids but can easily accommodate a family.

There is a half bath on the main floor.

Finished Walkout Basement:

Guest Room 3 - King size bed, standard East Coast King size.

Loveseat in front of gaming TV flips out to a queen sized mattress.

Full bathroom with tub/shower just off the guest room on this level.

*Additional Sleeping Options:

There is a large gathering space in the finished basement with a sectional sofa. The sofa is comfortable but there is also plenty of space for an air bed or slumber party set-up for kids! Our experience is that air beds are far more comfortable than sleeper sofas (hate those bars in your back!), so we opted not to furnish with a sleeper sofa. The air mattresses have the added bonus of being able to be placed where it best suits your family.

The upstairs master bedroom and the main floor living area each have comfortable sofas that could be used for overflow sleeping (for single use, not sleeper sofas). The sectional in the game room downstairs would sleep two small children or 1 adult. The rooms are all spacious and several have enough floor space for twin air mattresses. Please email us with specific questions regarding how your group will be comfortable at the house!

Our guest maximum is 13 adults plus children up to a total of 16. Exceptions are made on a case by case basis for infants.

There are restaurants, a lovely winery just a few short minutes from the house, and other attractions in nearby South Hill, VA and Littleton, NC. Raleigh, NC and Richmond, VA, including King's Dominion amusement park and water park are easy day trips.

Rent a boat, get some ice cream or deli sandwiches at the easy to access marina 1 mile away. It's a quick trip there either by boat or car. Large, quiet cove swimming right at the house with a large area for tubing or water skiing just 1 house down at the cove's entrance. Only 3 minutes to the main lake for even bigger water if you wish to explore! Kayak or canoe up Great Creek and enjoy the scenery. Have fun trying your skills at fishing off the dock! Only 6 minutes from Rte 85, 1-2 miles from two convenience grocery stores, 17 minutes from South Hill, VA and Littleton, NC, each with large Food Lion grocery stores. South Hill has rainy day activities such as bowling, small movie theater, train museum, farmers' market. Several area restaurants, under 1.5 hours to day trips in Raleigh, NC, or Richmond, VA, local festivals and quaint shops in nearby historic Clarkesville, VA. The local winery has outdoor music concerts and other events throughout the year.

Groups with Small Children:

We have a pack-n-play and highchair at the house for your use. We also have stepstools and a sizable set of BPA-free plates, cups and kid utensils that are dishwasher safe. The full size twin bed in the sitting room has optional bed rails that are very easy to add/remove. If you need to contain small roamers, it is simple to section off an area on the main floor that will keep little ones away from stairs. You can just close the door from the back hall to the foyer and insert a tension mounted child gate in the opening from the foyer to the living room/dining room open space. That will effectively create a level space that includes the powder room, kitchen, living room and dining room. Having traveled with our small children, we know that at certain ages having the ability to keep them away from stairs can be key! We have also installed a hotel lock on the main door so little ones can't run out unnoticed, and we have sliding door stops at the house you can clip on the doors (please ask if you need those).

About Owners, Dragonfly

One of us is an architect and certified interior designer, and grew up in Virginia. The other works in IT and is a transplant from Northern NJ. We currently live in Northern Virginia with our two small children. Over time, we have seen the slow transformation of Northern Virginia from areas of rolling hills and barn silos to highways and strip malls. We love to get away to the lake, escape from congestion and have time to focus on nature, life's simple treasures and, well, quiet. On a daily basis we struggle like everyone else to balance the demands of work and our two wonderful small children. Most of the time, we are overworked and overstressed! Unwinding and spending quality time with family and friends is what this lake house is all about! We work incredibly hard to keep this as a perfect place to gather with multiple families or friends. It's an ideal spot!

Owners, Dragonfly purchased this house in 2013

Why Owners, Dragonfly chose Bracey

We had been looking for a special lake house surrounded both by trees and lovely water views for several years as a place to vacation and share with others. Finding Lake Gaston, which enjoys consistent water levels and fixed docks, only about 3.25 hours from our main home has been ideal. The weather is often 10-12 degrees warmer than in Northern VA, and this particular spot enjoys 6-8 degrees warmer lake water than main lake properties, yet we have the benefit of large water right next to the house. We don't have to worry about high speed traffic with the kids swimming, and we love taking the boat down to the marina a mile away for an ice cream cone on a summer's day. The house fit our needs with plenty of space for multiple families, two great gathering spaces, hardwood floors and a real treehouse feel. It's truly our reprieve from the hustle and bustle of normal work and life! Having a lovely winery 2 miles away with special events and dinners is a big plus! We enjoy the convenience from Rte 85, and even the drive on 85 is more pleasant than 95 S. We love the terracing and gorgeous stone walls, and evenings on the deck or dock.

What makes this house unique

We enjoy the protection of the wide cove, with the views of bigger water and land with a lush canopy of trees. We love the view back of the house from the dock with the stacked stone landscaping walls and the covered eating area on the dock. We saw several homes that were nice houses but had horrible water views or bad water depth, but here we enjoy 8'-9' deep water off the end of the dock with gorgeous views in a fabulous lake location! The craftsman style touches of beadboard wainscot in the foyer and stair, the beadboard ceiling in the kitchen, the open floor plan, the beautiful staircase, the vaulted living room ceiling, 85' of shoreline, flat concrete play space on the front of the house and many other features all made this property an ideal choice for our family. Two of our bedrooms have king sized beds, and we have no issue with hot water thanks to our Rinnai on demand hot water system.

As owners, one of us in the design profession, we are adding so many new elements and updates both inside and out! Many of these are not yet pictured as we are constantly updating faster than we can take the current pictures, and we add wonderful touches every year! We re-landscaped the back yard and outfitted the deck and dock for summer.

Check out the events in nearby historic Clarkesville, VA's first waterfront town, or just enjoy the charming shops. Spend a day on wine tours starting at the award winning Rosemont Winery just 5 minutes from the house! Special 4th of July fireworks from the main bridge on Lake Gaston!!

Beautiful House w/Great Lake access - fish off the dock!

  • 5 of 5

6 adults & 6 children rented this amazing house over Columbus Day weekend. We also rented the water trampoline/slide which was a huge hit! The weather held up & it was about 80 & cloudy all weekend with a little rain here & there. We loved the kayaks, huge dock/boathouse, & fire pit for outdoor fun. The water was nice & deep for the kids to jump in off the dock. We literally spent hours out there lounging on the comfortable chairs. We brought lunch down both days & ate at the table there. The house itself was very clean & comfortable. Nice showers. Beds were nice. We enjoyed the Weber grill on the deck & the kitchen had everything you need to cook with (maybe a better whisk & a good knife?). We played ping pong in the garage, corn hole downstairs, basketball & some board games too. The basement has a huge, cozy sectional & a nice TV that the kids loved. The only complaint would be that the fridge didn’t have an ice dispenser so we had to keep going to the store to get ice (we knew this before we rented). The Dollar General is very close to the house.

The owners were wonderful & patient. I had lots of questions that they answered promptly & in detail. They truly want their renters to have a great time & were very helpful.

The day we got there the kids started asking about coming back next year. The adults soon agreed! Perfect long weekend with friends. We made many great memories, especially the kids catching huge catfish off the dock. It was so much fun & we can’t wait to go back!

Fantastic property in a darling part of Virginia

  • 5 of 5

My gal pals and I take a weekend trip every year and this was the perfect location for a relaxing vacation with close friends. There is an adorable winery just a few minutes away and the lake and dock are perfect for lounging and cooling off. The house was beautifully decorated and very clean. The owners were easy to communicate with and made themselves available to us as we had questions. We look forward to utilizing this property again for future trips!

Relaxation in a Beautiful Setting

  • 5 of 5

Our annual multi-generational family trip found us at Dragonfly this year and we couldn't have been happier! From the moment of booking, the owners have been wonderful to deal with and so responsive. The home was immaculate, spacious and very comfortable. The only piece I wasn't sure of (and could have asked beforehand but didn't) was the bedroom setup - the two master bedrooms are on either the floor above or the floor below the main living area. So, for our group, the stairs were a bit of an issue, but just a minor one, the solid banisters helped. Also, we didn't really get use out of the 5th bedroom since it was right off of the larger upstairs master bedroom, which was occupied by the grandparents in the group, and my teenage daughter wasn't really interested sleeping off of their bedroom and bathroom. However, for families with younger children, this could be a great option. With several blow up and alternate mattresses available, sleeping arrangements, even without the use of the 5th bedroom, were a non-issue. The kitchen is well-stocked and more open to the dining and living areas than what is depicted in the pictures, so this too was another pleasant surprise. Sitting out on the back deck and on the dock was thoroughly enjoyable especially on the breezy days. Since there is only one fridge in the kitchen, the fact that there is a separate mini fridge down at the dock was an added bonus. It's thoughtful details like this that really made Dragonfly special. We will hope to be back again someday. Our group took advantage of swimming every day in the nice warm lake, sun bathing, cooking s'mores at night in the fire pit, and barbecuing several dinners. The pictures of the property are lovely and still don't do Dragonfly justice. It was even lovelier than the pictures. Our best lake house rental to date by far! And a great big THANK YOU to the owners!

Wonderful family reunion

  • 5 of 5

House was very nice, clean, and comfortable. Great location, view, & accessories. Great space for the kids downstairs but we spent most of our time on the main deck and at the water. We enjoyed sitting out on the deck, the kayaks, Stand Up Paddleboards, and the "water trampoline" the most. Thanks so much. Would definitely visit again and suggest it to others!

Perfect Family Vacation Lake House!

  • 5 of 5

Not only was Dragonfly beautifully & perfectly had everything we needed and we had the absolute best time!

The only problem we had was the time went by too quickly!

Comfy beds with plenty of space.... never felt crowded with our party of 10. Firepit, Kayaks and Paddleboards were a huge hit. Ate every meal on the large deck overlooking the lake. Lots of fun indoor games and activities too like ping pong and games! The owners quickly answered any questions we had.

Beautiful Home!

  • 5 of 5

This home is amazing. My family has thanked me over and over for booking it. My children (twin teenage girls and an eleven year old son) enjoyed playing ping pong in the garage. The kayaks and the water bouncer were a hit outside. We roasted marshmallows by the fire pit. We cooked steaks on the gas grill and cooked meals in the nicely stocked kitchen! The house is well decorated and very clean. The showers are wonderful! Holly Grove Marina is very close to the house, but we rented a deck boat from Morning Star Marina which was about a 20 min drive by road - it's only about 7 miles to house by boat. The kids tubed and we had lunch at The Pointe. There is a Food Lion in Littleton and a Dollar General closer to the house. We had take out pizza from Lake Gaston Pizza one night, too. I loved the twin bed that is in the sitting area between the master bedroom and master bath. My son stayed in it when a another family joined us for a couple of nights. My husband is a general contractor and he thought the house was in great shape, well maintained and beautifully decorated and landscaped. Sitting on the deck and the dock as the kids played in the water was exactly what I needed to relax! It is the most kid friendly house I've ever stayed in - we had a two year old with us for a couple of nights and there was plenty to keep him entertained! I could go and on. We will vacation here again. The owners were great to work with. I knew I could call if I needed them, but all the details were in a binder at the house.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a great detailed review! We have kids ourselves, and having been avid renters over the years of other vacation homes, we figured out what works and what doesn't so we could make Dragonfly an ideal family getaway, or great place for friends to gather. We also love being able to keep an eye on the water and the kids while we relax on the deck and dock. We look forward to having you back soon!
