Breathtaking views of the Atlantic and Caribbean ...Experience Great Exuma from the comfort and privacy of the Hummingbird House and enjoy stunning 360 degree views of the colorful waters of Elizabeth Harbor, Master Harbor, Crab Cay and the south side bone fish flats. Soak up the sun and revel in the mild maritime climate of the cays while making this well appointed refuge your own, with space for parties of up to 6 guests. Lush tropical foliage surrounds this centrally located property that offers easy access to the south side water ways, beaches and bone fish flats; take a 10 minute drive to Georgetown or head up the road to Cheater’s restaurant. Or stay in and enjoy the unique open floor plan of the upper floor: a fully equipped kitchen, living room and dining room areas and 2 covered, elevated porches connected by a walk around deck space. The upper floor also contains a single bedroom and half bath as well as a day bed in the living room that sleeps 1 guest. Downstairs you’ll find spacious king and queen bedrooms, each with en-suite bathroom, and the house laundry room. Wake up to the tranquil sounds of hummingbirds and bananaquits that frequent the tropical gardens surrounding the house.
The house is located 20 minutes or less by car from the beautiful southern beaches, including Hooper's Bay, Jolly Hall, Stocking Island, Forbes Hill and the world famous Tropic of Cancer (voted among the top ten beaches of the world by “Island Living” magazine). The bonefish flats, known for world-class fishing, are a ten minute walk away and the Moriah Harbour Cay National Park is minutes away by car. These waters are fabulous for kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkeling and other water sports.
The private location of this house provides the perfect getaway for those seeking peace and tranquility despite being close to several restaurants and the amenities of the quaint town of George Town. Whether you enjoy relaxing, golfing, bird watching, beach combing, fishing, water sports or night life, the Hummingbird House is your home away from home for enjoying all the cays have to offer. We purchased the home in December 2013 so we have just started renting the house. Everyone has really enjoyed their stay so far. Please contact us if we can provide more information and ask about stays for longer than one month.
We started coming to Exuma six years ago to help veterinarians with free neuter and spay clinics for cats and dogs. We fell in love with this beautiful island and its people immediately. We have been all over the Caribbean and Bahamas and have never seen water quite as beautiful as it is around the Exuma Cays. We are all animal lovers and like the fact that there is an ongoing effort to try to help the animals of this island. We live in a cold climate and this is the perfect warm getaway for us.
Mike and Margaret Barton purchased this house in 2013
We love this house because it is so private but yet is close to town, beaches, fishing and several excellent restaurants. The view is absolutely breathtaking, the colors of the waters are stunning and the tropical flowering gardens provide a natural habitat for many types of birds. It is the perfect getaway any time of year. The summers are a little warmer but still very nice.
We fell in love with the view from this house. We have been told by locals that it is one of the best views on the Island. In the morning one can watch the sun come up with a cup of coffee and in the evening there are glorious sunsets. Also, because of the location on the ridge, there is always a cool ocean breeze. Everyday is an adventure on Exuma, whether it is discovering a new beach, fishing the flats or talking to folks from all over the world who love the sailing that the Exuma Cays provide.
The house was exactly what I was looking for! It's located out of town and with no neighbors nearby, which made sitting on deck very peaceful. The view was amazing!
The house setup is great. I really liked the open concept with the common rooms upstairs and having the bedrooms on the main floor. A friend of mine came on the trip, and having our own ensuite bathrooms was very convenient. The house is well equipped and communication with Margaret was above and beyond my expectations.
If (more like when) I make it back to Exuma, I would definitely stay here again!
We stayed at the Hummingbird House for one week in August 2016. The house is on a quiet street so we never saw any neighbours during our stay... which was fine by us. Our group consisted of two adults, two children and one infant. We all had plenty of space whenever we decided to stay in. The kids especially loved having a day bed in the living room so they could cozy up to watch TV.
Having the kitchen, living/dining room on the second floor was amazing! We loved the 360 degree view that the balcony provided and enjoyed having morning coffee and drinks outside just about everyday. The kitchen was well equipped with all the essentials so we were able to cook every day.
On the main floor, the bedrooms were spacious and very cozy, each with an ensuite. The linen closet consisted of extra sheets, towels and beach towels so we had more than we needed. And having the laundry room was quite handy, especially with an infant.
Margaret was a gracious host. She provided very useful information upon arrival and when we were threatened by a tropical storm she made sure that we were okay. She even offered that we go back to the house in the event that our flight was cancelled. Thankfully, it didn't come to that.
Overall, we had a wonderful time at the house and would definitely not hesitate to go back.
Margaret, thank you for a wonderful home!
Hummingbird House, what a fantastic place! Let us start by saying that the islands of Great Exuma and Lesser Exuma are an extraordinary experience in all possible ways. It has it all: direct flights from the mainland, incredibly friendly and happy people, lovely beaches, good restaurants, no crime, and plenty of fun stuff to do.
The house itself could not be located in a more ideal spot – on the high ridge between the Caribbean and the Atlantic Oceans. We watched the sunrise over the ocean and southeastern island every day and beautiful sunsets over the Caribbean most evenings, but only if we got home in time from our daily adventures. One can stroll down to the ocean in a short while for swimming, kayaking, or bone fishing on the extensive flats visible from the house. George Town is close by with everything that you might need, including lots of action, fun and people watching.
The house is exceptionally clean, decorated, and well equipped. It felt like home the moment we walked in and was as comfortable as our own home throughout our stay.
We have stayed at many vacation properties throughout the world – none were more pleasant than this wonderful property. The owner, Margaret, will do everything in her power to make sure that you have all the contacts and information you need. She has extensive knowledge of the island and will gladly share it all for the asking.
This is a first class property in every respect and we can not recommend it too highly.
PURPOSE OF OUR TRIP: To have uninterrupted family time, get away from the day-to-day demands and schedules of our lives, and share a once in a lifetime experience. Accomplished on every account! HOUSE: The house is clean, bright, and exactly as the photos show. The best part for us was the layout and floor plan. With three of us in our party, we each had a bedroom and bathroom to ourselves. The master and guestroom were on the ground floor and each had their own door leading directly to their own sitting areas amidst the beautiful shrubs and colorful, flower-laden bushes. Upstairs was bright and inviting and literally everywhere you turned, you had a view out the windows to some form of water. My favorite view was looking out the kitchen window to the ever-changing Caribbean with the tides coming and going. LOCATION: As other guests have noted, the location in the middle of the island allows for quick access to Georgetown for amenities such as groceries or shopping. Little Exuma and many options for beaches are to the south. TRIP HIGHLIGHTS: * Relaxing on the deck, reading, and listening to/watching the bananaquits. * Mom’s Bakery next to Santana’s Bar & Grill on Little Exuma. Upon purchase of Mom’s Rum Cake, right then and there, Mom poked holes in the cake and poured two ladles of a mixture of rum, butter, and sugar over it. Cinnamon bread was delicious too. * Grouper Fingers at Cheater’s Restaurant, a short jaunt a few miles north of the Hummingbird House. Light batter coated the recently caught grouper which melted in our mouths. * Berlie’s Rental Car. Janet and Edsel were great to work with and provided us with a sturdy car at a reasonable price. THINGS TO KNOW: Bring a lot of U.S. cash with you (many hundreds of dollars in various denominations). Groceries cost a little over $200 for the nine days we were there. Eating out is very expensive but absolutely worth the experiences we had at different places. There is a bank in the middle of Georgetown with an ATM in the lobby (closes at 3 pm). Near the bank is a gas station where guys pump the gas for you. Just be prepared and plan your budget accordingly. SUMMARY: We highly recommend the Hummingbird House. The owner was very responsive to our inquiries. The binder of things to do and places to go is very useful. But, for us, sitting on the deck and watching the world go by was the best of all.
