About the property

3 bedroom , 2.5 bath sleeps 6 house (1800 sq ft with 800 sq ft balcony)

Breathtaking views of the Atlantic and Caribbean ...Experience Great Exuma from the comfort and privacy of the Hummingbird House and enjoy stunning 360 degree views of the colorful waters of Elizabeth Harbor, Master Harbor, Crab Cay and the south side bone fish flats. Soak up the sun and revel in the mild maritime climate of the cays while making this well appointed refuge your own, with space for parties of up to 6 guests. Lush tropical foliage surrounds this centrally located property that offers easy access to the south side water ways, beaches and bone fish flats; take a 10 minute drive to Georgetown or head up the road to Cheater’s restaurant. Or stay in and enjoy the unique open floor plan of the upper floor: a fully equipped kitchen, living room and dining room areas and 2 covered, elevated porches connected by a walk around deck space. The upper floor also contains a single bedroom and half bath as well as a day bed in the living room that sleeps 1 guest. Downstairs you’ll find spacious king and queen bedrooms, each with en-suite bathroom, and the house laundry room. Wake up to the tranquil sounds of hummingbirds and bananaquits that frequent the tropical gardens surrounding the house.

The house is located 20 minutes or less by car from the beautiful southern beaches, including Hooper's Bay, Jolly Hall, Stocking Island, Forbes Hill and the world famous Tropic of Cancer (voted among the top ten beaches of the world by “Island Living” magazine). The bonefish flats, known for world-class fishing, are a ten minute walk away and the Moriah Harbour Cay National Park is minutes away by car. These waters are fabulous for kayaking, paddle boarding, snorkeling and other water sports.

The private location of this house provides the perfect getaway for those seeking peace and tranquility despite being close to several restaurants and the amenities of the quaint town of George Town. Whether you enjoy relaxing, golfing, bird watching, beach combing, fishing, water sports or night life, the Hummingbird House is your home away from home for enjoying all the cays have to offer. We purchased the home in December 2013 so we have just started renting the house. Everyone has really enjoyed their stay so far. Please contact us if we can provide more information and ask about stays for longer than one month.

About Mike and Margaret Barton

We started coming to Exuma six years ago to help veterinarians with free neuter and spay clinics for cats and dogs. We fell in love with this beautiful island and its people immediately. We have been all over the Caribbean and Bahamas and have never seen water quite as beautiful as it is around the Exuma Cays. We are all animal lovers and like the fact that there is an ongoing effort to try to help the animals of this island. We live in a cold climate and this is the perfect warm getaway for us.

Mike and Margaret Barton purchased this house in 2013

Why Mike and Margaret Barton chose Bahamas

We love this house because it is so private but yet is close to town, beaches, fishing and several excellent restaurants. The view is absolutely breathtaking, the colors of the waters are stunning and the tropical flowering gardens provide a natural habitat for many types of birds. It is the perfect getaway any time of year. The summers are a little warmer but still very nice. We are off the beaten path but you can walk to the bonefish flats for great fishing of all kinds , kayaking , paddle boarding and snorkeling . We are close to the 6 best beaches on the island ... 10 to 20 mins away by car.

What makes this house unique

We fell in love with the view from this house. We have been told by locals that it is one of the best views on the Island. In the morning one can watch the sun come up with a cup of coffee and in the evening there are glorious sunsets. Also, because of the location on the ridge, there is always a cool ocean breeze. Everyday is an adventure on Exuma, whether it is discovering a new beach, fishing the flats or talking to folks from all over the world who love the sailing that the Exuma Cays provide.

Notes:
Please ask for directions to this very private location. The entire house is tiled and is very spacious and comfortable .The house and garden are situated on a 20,000 square foot lot surrounded by natural vegetation 40 feet above sea level . The Georgetown International Airport is very small and quaint but there are several major airlines that fly into GGT. Delta, United, American, US Air, Air Canada, Bahamasair, Silver and Sky all fly into this little airport. We have had good luck connecting in Atlanta on Delta which has a direct flight to Exuma and also on United and American , connecting in Miami or Fort Lauderdale. Air Canada also offers some very good connections from the East Coast. There are several good car rental agencies and also taxi services. We suggest travel insurance in the summer months because we do not refund in case of hurricanes. You are welcome to rebook though at no additional charge.

Hummingbird House is fantastic!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I, together with another couple, spent a week at Hummingbird House in mid-March. Exuma is amazing:

Great bonefishing - better than Belize, better than Yucatan, big fish, a truly great guide!

Great beaches - Hooper's Bay to see the turtles, Coco Plum beach for sand dollars in gin-clear waters, Tropic of Cancer Beach and Forbes Hill Beach on Little Exuma, Stocking Island for swimming...

'

Great food - grouper (and great good humor) at Cheater's, best peas and rice at Santana's (my husband asked for seconds), best barbequed pork and macaroni and cheese at Chat 'n' Chill, great food at Fish Fry, and also great selection at Exuma Market for dining at "home."

Friendly people who are happy to share tips, opinions, directions and jokes.

Hummingbird House is also amazing:

Great views - what a treat to look out over the bay and over the Atlantic while drinking coffe in the morning or cocktails in the afternoon.

Great location - private, but close enough to get to town, to beaches, to fishing, to restaurants, to any other adventures.

Great house - large enough to easily accommodate two couples very comfortably; perfectly clean when we arrived; stocked with all the equipment you need to prepare meals; towels to take to the beach; books to identify the birds and plants; and especially Margaret's immensely helpful binder of places to go and things to do!

We've been recommending this place to all our friends!

Thanks so much, Margaret! I wish we could have stayed longer and seen more places and done more things (and eaten more grouper and conch). We'll be back!

An amazing, outstanding week with all we ever needed in this home.

  • 5 of 5

This home is excellent we stayed 6/2-9/17 with 2 bedrooms and a small room upstairs with a twin bed, there is also 2 full baths and a half bath, full kitchen, small living area, and kitchen table, dining table with a wrap around terrace outdoors AC in upstairs and downstairs rooms which you may or may not need. It was not on the beach, but we had plenty of beach time during our 7 day stay and the views were incredible.

The roads in Exuma are not great and the back roads aka limestone with pot holes everywhere are even worse! We rented a small Honda Fit car through Sure to Shore, Janese was super easy to work with and the car was cheaper than other agencies I looked into. (330 for week) Gas was around 4.60 a gallon, they drive on the left side of road and car. Avoid the holes and sides of road!

The Caribbean waters are shallow and so beautiful and very clear....clearest I have seen. Our favorite beaches were Forbes Hill and Tropic of Cancer on Little Exuma (about 30 minutes or so from house). We loved CocoPlum great in low tide for sand bars and shelling. Exuma Point is so super cool and we found many Conch shells there and it was the calmest waters we saw the whole trip. Jolly Hall and Hoopers Bay are also very beautiful.

We rented a small 15' whaler boat from Minns two days, excellent excellent MUST DO! Seriously so fun and so much to explore. Sand Dollar Beach is a score if you like shelling. My friend Geana saw Starfish to the west of Chat and Chill which is a must to visit! Try the Conch Salad and pet the Stingray or feed them if you wish. There are trails on several of the beaches you can boat to...walk the trail to the Atlantic...AMAZING! Our boat was 200 deposit, 310 for two day plus gas which was about 35.

We did the boat tour from Robert's Island Adventure, cheaper than other tours. We did the all day about 90 mile tour to see iguanas, swim with pigs, swim in the Thunderball Grotto, swim with sharks, and go to a sand go to a sandbar in the middle of the ocean...this was 370. for two people. The tour was our spurge for our anniversary and well worth it for a one time experience.

We brought breakfast and ate dinner usually in our home...lunch we ate out. We spent anywhere from 40-75 for lunch for 2 people. I usually had one drink with lunch. Our favorite meals were at Santana's on Little Exuma (fried lobster), Shirley's Fish Fry (blackened grouper and the fish sandwich were are fav). Fanny's is close and good for a meal and relaxed.

Everything about this place equates to an amazing stay. Anything that you might find yourself in need of while on the island just happens to be somewhere in this spacious incredibly inviting home away from home. This will most definitely be our go to vacation rental while we are on Exuma.

Escape to paradise

  • 5 of 5

What’s the best way to start and end your day while in paradise? By watching the sun rise over the Atlantic, and by watching it set into the Caribbean – both from the wraparound deck of the Hummingbird House.

We stayed in the Hummingbird House for one amazing month. There were four adults and the house was plenty big enough for us; it was well-stocked with everything we needed to be comfortable, including a nice library of books. It felt like home, with the added bonus of hummingbirds and bananaquits visiting in January and February.

Margaret was an excellent host, providing us detailed information about places to go and things to do on the islands. We took advantage of many of her recommendations and were never disappointed.

While we enjoyed cooking and grilling meals on the deck, George Town – a ten minute drive – and the surrounding area provided plenty of dining options. Meal choices ranged from excellent local foods, including conch salad and grilled fish or lobster, to the familiar burger or pizza.

Along with the fantastic views, the house is in a nice location that is quiet and provides walking, running and/or fishing opportunities. It is also a short walk to Frannie’s, a local sports bar & grill.

We also took advantage of the opportunity to pursue bonefish – the ‘grey ghost’ – just down the road from the Hummingbird House on the Atlantic side of the island. We used a guide for a day, but also waded the flats on our own during low tide.

The people on Exuma are remarkable; everyone was nice and helpful and happy! We learned so much about the island, from North to South – or East to West – by talking to local folks.

What an experience to have beautiful white-sugar sand beaches and the most unbelievable clear turquoise waters all to yourselves. We’ll likely find our way back to Exuma in the future, and look forward to another stay at the Hummingbird House.

The Hummingbird House is a tastefully appointed 3 bedroom, 2.5 bath house located on a ridge less than 4 miles south of Georgetown. With the 800 square foot wrap-around balcony, one can enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views and the azure colors of both the Atlantic and Caribbean waters (including Elizabeth Harbour, Master Harbour, Crab Cay and the southern bonefish flats). Enjoy the spectacular sunrises and sunsets from this deck which provides sun and shade. Wake up to the tranquil sounds of hummingbirds and bananaquits that frequent the tropical gardens surrounding the house.

Enjoy all of the vistas and cool ocean breezes from the open living room and dining areas upstairs. The upper level also has a fully equipped kitchen, pantry, small bedroom (twin bed) and a half bath. There is an additional twin daybed in the living room for an extra guest. Downstairs there are two bedrooms (king and queen beds) with en suite bathrooms and a laundry room.

The house is located 20 minutes or less by car from the beautiful southern beaches, including Hooper's Bay, Jolly Hall, Stocking Island, Forbes Hill and the world famous Tropic of Cancer (voted among the top ten beaches of the world by “Island Living” magazine).
