River Ridge Guest Ranch is located in Palominas, AZ just 90 miles southeast of Tucson nestled in the scenic San Pedro River Valley. The 30-acre property was purchased in 1996 and the main house was built from our own design with an emphasis on bringing the outdoors in. We incorporated the same design aesthetics when we built the guest cottage in 2004. And the ranch’s location with an elevation of 4200' makes for a moderate and pleasant climate all year 'round.
The handicapped-accessible, 1-bedroom custom, ranch-style guest cottage can accommodate virtually any sized group, in a non-smoking environment. You don’t even have to worry about the silverware or pots and pans, we’ve got you covered! The cottage features a fully equipped kitchen including a dishwasher and gas range….along with a well-stocked storage pantry. The great room features a cozy wood-burning stove for your enjoyment. The spacious bedroom offers southwest decor and a Queen-sized bed…. and a full-sized sleeper sofa is ready for your tag-a-longs. The bathroom has a wheel-chair accessible shower, and full laundry facilities are available for your use. For your convenience we provide you with laundry detergent, iron and board, a hair dryer and small personal items i.e. shampoos, lotions, toothbrushes, razors and sunscreen.
RRGR is on 30 acres and is set up for you to bring your horses...plenty of maneuvering room for oversized rigs. Whether you are just passing through and need an over-night spot to turn your critters out, or want an extended stay to get away from the heat or the cold, this is the place for you. The barn has two stalls with 30'X50' exterior attached pens and a 20-acre pasture for turnout...plus a round pen. Ride on the National Riparian Area just out 'the backdoor' of the cottage or trailer a short distance to the Huachuca Mountains and explore miles of trails. The guest ranch is adjacent to the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area which is home to hundreds of species of birds, mammals, reptiles and butterflies. Within walking distance is the Lehner's Prehistoric Mammoth Kill Site.
Your cozy getaway is also near Ramsey Canyon Preserve (the hummingbird capital of the west), the old mining town of Bisbee, and Tombstone, the “town too tough to die”. We are near Fort Huachuca with its Historical Museum, Kartchner Caverns, and the Pima Air and Space Museum in Tucson. Tom is a docent at the Air Museum and can take you on a guided walking tour.
Outside, relax in the jacuzzi with a glass of wine or iced tea while you take in the unobstructed view of the valley and the emerald green cottonwood trees lining the river. You will enjoy the entertaining antics of the hummers at their feeders. Follow along with our numerous local and visiting avian friends stopping by for a snack, along with numerous members of the mammal and reptilian families. Also, you’ll appreciate the carport and the covered, wrap-around porch. The bunkhouse (camper/trailer) is also available for additional family/guests. And, there is ample room for any size RV….electric and water hookups are available...... (free dump stations in Sierra Vista). Marvel at our authentic, 1890's sheepherder's wagon which sleeps 2 on a full-sized bed...nestled near the campfire area. Or slumber away atop cots on the porch, or try sleeping under the starry western sky around the campfire.
A petting zoo is available for your family's enjoyment. Cuddle with the bunnies and romp with our two dwarf goats, Wilbur and Orville Wright (the WOW brothers!). Kim and Tom Collins purchased this cottage in 1997
Tom and I feel extremely lucky to have found this bare land for sale in 1996 with its eastern fenceline adjoining the riparian area of the San Pedro River. With unobstructed views of the river, the Huachuca and Mule Mountains and the entire valley, we remind ourselves daily of our good fortune to live in such a beautiful and peaceful place. Because we feel so very lucky to have found this amazing property, we want to share our little piece of heaven with you!
If we don't see you in the future, we'll see you in the pasture!
Your hosts.....Tom and Kim
This place was a dream! We were greeted upon arrival and felt right at home. If we would have had forgotten anything at home it would have been fine, because the cabinets were filled with anything we could have wanted. We had a fire, got in the hot tub, and went on a hike right on the property the next morning. Will definitely be back.
everything about this listing is at least as advertised or better. super helpful & friendly owners who are there to assist but give you your own space. can't say enough about the whole experience!
The host a very accommodating. The property is private and peaceful. The birds and wildlife are great entertainment.
I have been remiss in not writing this review earlier, but in my defense, I have good excuses.
In early December, my husband and I and our animals had to move out of our house while roof repairs were being done. I'd used Homeaway for my last two rental vacations and was certainly not interested in staying in a hotel, especially for three weeks and with three dogs!
After searching the entire Sierra Vista, Hereford and Bisbee areas, I kept returning to the River Ridge Guest House. Other places were closer to home, some were cheaper, but RR seemed to draw me. So I spoke with Kim, the owner, and we set the date. Kim met us at the gate and had her dogs inside while mine familiarized themselves with their new home.
I had severe back pain that had been going on for some time so you can imagine how pleased we were with the fresh quiche, eggs and bottle of wine, not to mention the fully stocked pantry when we arrived. Delicious!
We settled into that lovely property and were completely enamored by the beautiful well-designed guest house, the wide open scenery, and the numerous amenities.
Kim and Tom were perfect hosts, available for any thing we needed. Our six year old grandson visited one night and it was too late for him to play outside, but I could tell he was bored with me and Grandpa, so I opened the pantry and he and I made cupcakes. The next day, Kim led him on his first horse ride, he met the WOW brothers, and some beautiful hens and roosters. But his favorite part was driving the golf cart with Kim as his passenger. He would have stayed forever---just like me!
Two days before we left, I had back surgery in Tucson. So my excuse for it taking so long to write this review is that back surgery takes recovery time, it was Christmas, and we moved back into a house with boxes stacked high in every room. It's taken us months to get some semblance of order!
The RR guest house is the perfect place for animal lovers, quiet seekers, meditation, children, healthy living, and it's also a great place to make new friends. Kim and Tom are exceptional hosts who allow as much privacy as you desire but are only a call away if needed. I can't say enough about how the RR met all of our expectations and even made our chihuahuas and very large German Shepherd happy! I'm still hoping to go back soon.
My wife and I stayed at the guest house for five days over spring break. We have used VRBO all over the world and have never had a better experience that at River Ridge. From the opening minute we were greeted with outstanding hospitality, not to mention quiche for dinner and fresh eggs for breakfast. The hot tub at sunset was amazing, and the quiet location and wonderful bird variety made every day special. Southern Arizona is like no where else in the state and the weather was perfect. We will have a hard time not making it our normal spring break location.
Absolutely wonderful getaway location. The owners were beyond friendly and accommodating; it felt like we were visiting with family. There was deliciously prepared quiche and farm-fresh eggs for us in the fridge when we arrived (not too mention a fully stocked pantry, and beer/wine!). The decor struck a balance between cowboy and American Indian, with great care taken to create a relaxing and unique environment. Bird feeders surrounded the property and gave us quite the experience all-day long. The hammock on the front porch was in constant use. The hot tub was great and aromatherapy solutions were provided. It was my wife's birthday and the owner provided a birding book and binoculars based on her interests (by the way, you must visit Ramsey Canyon only a short drive away for birding). We brought our dog and he was given free reign to enjoy the grounds. The owner even coordinated letting her dogs out when our dog was in the rental; so that our pup could enjoy the freedom he rarely receives. It meant a lot to us to have the owner care that he had a great visit also. There are many more details I could provide, but hopefully these highlights give you a feel for our experience. You won't regret visiting River Ridge Ranch, the beauty of the land, built environment, and people will not disappoint!
