About Emily Gassenheimer de Friedlander
My husband and I are American citizens who have collectively lived in Costa Rica for 70 years. We are very knowledgeable about all aspects of Costa Rica. We are available to help with side trips and offer any other information. We take pride in Casa Sirena and are responsive to our renters needs.
Emily Gassenheimer de Friedlander purchased this House in 2012
Why Emily Gassenheimer de Friedlander chose Esterillos Oeste
My husband is from NYC but has lived in Costa Rica for over 40 years. My husband is also a master woodworker craftsman and used these skills in 'Casa Sirena' . All of the wood work is handcrafted. The proximity to San Jose is also a major plus as is it's location which is between Jaco Beach and Manuel Antonio. It is the best of both worlds!
What makes this House unique
Esterillos Oeste is a peaceful, uncrowded beach. Sometimes you have the entire beach to yourself. The beach is just steps from our property . It is wonderful to be so close to the beach. You can be sun bathing on the beach and run into the house for a snack , another beer ,extra towel or a jump into the pool and be back at the beach in a couple of minutes. The natural surroundings are lovely. It is a very unique spot.

Beautiful, tranquil and private
Casa Sirena, our home for 5 days, was idyllic for our family of 5 adults and 5-year old grandson. The beach, which was a 2 minute walk from the house, was ours alone for most of the week. Much time was spent boogie boarding, body surfing and beach combing for countless perfectly shaped shells. To our delight the sound of the surf could be heard from anywhere in the house.
The house was just as described. We wanted a large place close to the ocean with a pool. The decor and furnishings were perfect for a beach vacation. Having the pool was one of the highlights as our grandson perfected his swimming skills as he spent many hours there.
We enjoyed our days zip lining at a nearby course and our trip to Manuel Antonio state park.
Emily is a very generous hostess and saw to all of our needs. I would highly recommend Casa Sirena for a Costa Rica getaway.
Roomy, beautiful, comfortable home!
This home is a wonderful option for a larger group or family. Walking distance to a small village with restaurants, bars and small grocery stores. Beach is across a small dead end road and has trees for shade and hammocks. The rancho is a nice cool place for meals and card playing. Paradise.
This is the perfect location and ideal home for anyone wanting to truly enjoy Costa Rica and the amazing beaches it offers to swimmers, surfers, boggy boarders, shell collectors, star gazers, beach strollers and the like. The home is lovely with all the amenities that make it comfortable. A swimming pool, huge kitchen and dining table, comfortable seating inside and out all contribute to the ease of spending time here. It’s very quiet but of you want a slice of Tico life, an easy stroll up the beach on weekends will show you how it’s done by Costa Rican’s. Lots of Scarlet Macaws in the afternoons add to the tropical delight. The home and property are well maintained and I’ve already recommended this property to friends and relatives! I’ll be back for sure .......
Tranquil Beachside Retreat
Our recent trip to Costa Rica was a great success. Casa Sirena is perfectly located in a quiet town along an expansive picturesque beach. Located a few steps from the sand, this house provided my family with all of our needs for the week. Thank you Emily for hosting us. I would certainly recommend this location to future travelers.

Delightful Surprise and Wonderful Stay
When we first arrived in Esterillos Oeste, I must admit I was a bit surprised by how rustic the town was, we ended up falling in love with it. An expected 2 hour drive from SJO ended up taking a little over 3 1/2 hours so our nerves were a bit frayed upon arrival. The caretakers Modesto and Di welcomed us with a very warm greeting even with an obvious language barrier. Upon entry of the lovely, well appointed with a delightful artsy quirky feel any leftover stress from real life or the commute melted away quickly. Being greeted with a bountiful welcome basket and many flower/plant arrangements was an additional unexpected touch. It didn't take much time for us to walk a few steps to what felt like our own private beach and realize what we were in for a great week. We didn't stray away from the cozy community for a couple of days as the natural beauty and welcoming charm of the people made us feel right at home. The surf is pretty strong and provided much fun and the more skilled surf crowd who would collect every afternoon for a session we enjoyed watching many nights during the week with many other locals. The Mermaid Statue, tide pools, Aqua di Pipa, open air restaurants, wildlife, uncrowded beaches were fabulous. Not to mention what seemed to be a flock of thousands of parrots which would come to roost every night providing a nice end to the day. After a couple of down days we began to realize just how great a location we were in being nestled between Jaco and Queppos/Antonio Manuel. From there we had easy day trips to Carrera National Park, Antonio Manuel National Park, Jaco and Queppos along with many other nooks and crannies we explored during our stay. The owner, Emily, is warm and very helpful and very responsive before, during and after our stay.
I could likely write a novel about our time in Costa Rica and at our new home away from home, Casa Sirena, but i think you get the point. I would strongly recommend if you are planning a trip here you should consider staying here, it has it all!
Esterillos beach is a very quiet and secluded local beach far from the over developed tourist spots. It can be perfect for surfing and boogie boarding and at other times great for swimming and playing in the water.
It is a long and beautiful beach . You can walk for miles in either direction. Close by on the beach there are many large tide pools perfect for children (and adults) to swim in , snorkel or just relax and watch the ocean and sunset. These were formed by lava overflow and you may also find some fossils and shells (and maybe some monkeys) beach combing. The famous magnificent bronze mermaid statue graces the beach of Esterillos Oeste., Although Esterillos Oeste is a small, and typical village on a tranquil beach , it is just 20 minutes South of the beach town of Jaco which has casinos, restaurants of all types, shops, bars, jazz and lots of night-life.It is also a good place for souvenir shopping . Jaco is also a town where tours are easily booked.Forty minutes south of Esterillos is the town of Quepos and the world famous Manuel Antonio National Park, which is one of the finest rain forest parks in the country. Manuel Antonio is home to a large diversity of wildlife including two species of monkeys,, one of which is very rare and use their bushy tails for balance. There is a sloth trail, turtles, and many birds. It is a great place for hiking and has beautiful white sand beaches. There are some incredible views from high up on the rocky cliffs a ways through the jungle. I recommend visiting Manuel Antonio. They also have first class restaurants . Manuel Antonio is one of the places nearby that offers a variety of diving, snorkeling, deep sea fishing, whale watching tours among other specialty tours.
I also recommend a hike in Carara National Park. It is on the way to Esterillos Oeste and is an easy hike where you are apt to see all different kinds of wildlife. There are streams which you can bathe in and the hike is an easy one ; it is especially good for children and people who want a nice easy hike. Right before the park is the ' Crocodile Bridge'. This is a must stop; where it is possible to see sometimes as many as 20 crocodiles sunning by the estuary or floating with their snouts above the water. There are also many boating trips up estuaries where you may also see wildlife. These sights are about 30 minutes from our beach house 'Casa Sirena' (the mermaid's house). Also in this area is a zipline tree top adventure.
Other activities in the area include ziplines, monkey tours and birdwatching in mangrove swamps, deep sea fishing and diving, surfing , surfing lessons, jungle or beach tours on horseback, and boogie boarding, snorkeling, and massage.
Horseback riding on the beach or in forests is also fun and a different activity in all these areas.
Casa Sirena is a perfect home base to enjoy the wide variety of activities in the area or just chilling beach side sunset watching, and boogie boarding.
I have lived in Costa Rica for 28 years and am available to point you in the right direction , depending on your interests.
The medical services are in Jaco Beach ,20 minutes from Esterillos Oeste.
Some possible tours include : Sea Kayaking and Snorkeling , Rafting, Guided Park Tours,Estuary Boat Trips,Ocean Kayaking and Snorkeling,Horseback Riding and Catamaran Tours
