About the property

2 Bedroom, 2 Bath Twain Harte classic summer cabin with enormous deck & Wi-fi

We're looking forward to this summer and our Opening Day for 2017 will be in May. The lake will be open to the public on May 27th. Bring on the lemonade!

We are excited to announce that AIR CONDITIONING IS GETTING INSTALLED ON 6/7/17! We have listened to the feedback we've received from our guests and will be installing air conditioners for this summer in each bedroom and the main great room. We know this will be a wonderful addition to the property and can't wait to share this new amenity with our guests.

Winter’s Camp is a charming and cozy cabin tucked into the pines in the center of Twain Harte, with modern touches and access to Twain Harte Lake. It’s the perfect escape for families looking for a relaxing stay in a quaint Sierra town that time forgot (in a good way).

The cabin has two bedrooms and two bathrooms and can comfortably sleep eight. There is a master bedroom on the far end with a queen-size bed and ensuite bathroom. A second bedroom features a full-size bed plus twin bunk beds – perfect for the family. The spacious living room has a vaulted ceiling and a fireplace (that is just for show. There is ample space to huddle around a vintage board game, relax with a book or enjoy movie night with family and friends.

Winter’s Camp has been in our family for decades. It was recently handed down a generation and given a modern refresh. All the bed and bath linens are fresh, comfortable and actually match! There is speedy wireless internet access – with a strong signal throughout the house and front deck. The living room has a 42” Sony TV in case you’ve reached pine tree and sunshine overload. The connected Roku box will let you queue up a movie from your Netflix, Amazon or Hulu account. Note: there is no standard cable TV service.

The kitchen is well-stocked with the cookware and tools you need to pull together a family feast (sharp knives, solid cookware and a cocktail shaker in case of emergency). There is fresh, new table service for eight. Enjoy meals inside when the air is cool or take advantage of the huge deck out front for dining al fresco.

Speaking of that deck: you’ll spend more time here than any other place during your stay. Perfect for relaxing, having a drink and coming up with grand plans that you’ll never get around to because you’re so content right where you are. Seriously, it’s a great deck.

Your rental comes with lake privileges, granting you access to Twain Harte Lake for your entire group. Relax on the sandy shore, take a swim in the cool water on a hot day or make your way across the lake the “The Rock” where the big kids hang out and dare each other to throw backflips off the diving board. Don’t forget to hit the Snack Shack for soft serve ice cream.

There is so much more to say, but we’ll let the pictures do some of the talking as well. The owner manages the property and lives locally if you need any help during your stay. If you have questions about Winter’s Camp, please email us. For more information about Winter’s Camp and great ideas for day trips and activities during your trip, Enjoy your stay!

About Bill Salsig and Jody Pritchard

Winter's Camp (known in our family as 'The Cabin') has been the hub of our summer vacations since the mid-80's. In 2009 Bill (pictured with his mother Natalie and granddaughter) 'retired' from the US Forest Service and moved to Twain Harte where he now lives full time. Bill has continued his love of engineering and still inspects trail bridges on the Stanislaus National Forest. Bill also serves on the Twain Harte Lake Association Board of Directors.

In 2013 he purchased the cabin from his mother and spent a year renovating the cabin with the help of his daughter Jody. Jody is a professional lighting designer in San Francisco and helps Bill with the rental management and online presence of Winter's Camp.

Why Bill Salsig and Jody Pritchard chose Gold Country & High Sierra

Why Winter in Summer?

For five generations the name 'Winter' has been handed down through the first sons in our family. The youngest is now just 7. Winter's Camp has been a place where generations of our family reconnect, play, and relax together during hot summer days. So many hours have been spent reading on the deck, lounging at The Lake, and swapping stories. As a kid Jody always wanted to vacation somewhere else, but now as an adult with her own family, she loves the smell of the pine trees when they drive into Twain Harte and her children constantly ask when they get to go back.

What makes this cabin unique

Summers at Winter's Camp are the perfect answer to the cold Bay Area fog. We have invested in the property to provide fun Mid-Century modern design and creature comforts for the next generations to come. We look forward to sharing our little slice of summer haven with you and the people you care about.

average rating of 4.7058825 based on 17 reviews

The only thing we would enjoy better is a earlier check in and one hour later check out .

  • 5 of 5

Everything you could possibility think of was there -

Earlier check in and a little later check out would be better for our family though - that may stop us from renting here again - it was so perfect other wise we loved the huge deck - we never turned on the tv -

Great cabin! central location, clean and cozy & family friendly

  • 5 of 5

Fantastic Cabin and lovely owners.. The cabin is centrally located, a 2 minute walk to the village and a short drive to the lake (we also walked)

The cabin is very well equipped, clean and modernized but has a vintage rustic charm. We loved our trip and cant wait to return.

Beautiful, well equipped home with responsive and kind property owners!

  • 5 of 5

Bill and his daughter, Jody were very helpful from the moment we booked their beautiful home. Bill stopped by shortly after we arrived to drop off a bottle of wine and snacks for the kids. He told us about things to do in the area as well as the History of the place. The property worked out perfect for our group; 3 adults and 3 children - the kids loved the deck and the toys/games on the property. The kitchen had everything we needed to make breakfast, lunch and dinner. Everything was spotless, we can't wait to go back. The only disappointment was the local pool was not open which of course had nothing to do with the property. The lake was beautiful though they are quite strict (no personal food or drinks at the lake and anything bought at snack shack must be consumed within the "eating area," not where all you're towels etc. are).

Cute cabin

  • 3 of 5

Cabin was cute. The photos made it look much bigger than it was. Very old but well kept. The beds were very comfortable, however, I was disappointed with the lack of modern conveniences such as a newer fridge with filtered water, a dishwasher, and air conditioning. It was 100 degrees and it was so uncomfortable to sleep in the heat that I contemplated just driving home. They did provide fans but it was still very hot even with the windows open and fans on. This was great for adults but there isn't room for kids inside the cabin to really roam, nor a yard for them to play in. More for grown ups than kids unless it was used as a winter retreat. The outside deck was huge and the lake pass was a plus, even if it was $8 per person. I liked the proximity to town as we were able to walk for meals and shopping. The showers were very small but were okay for us because we are not big people, but I think anyone who is tall or has a larger stature might find them a bit tight. Parking was very scarce. One covered spot and the other cars had to park on the street. It was cute and if you're looking for a rustic place to stay close to town, etc this is a good choice.

Owner's Response: Stacy, Thanks so much for your review. I want you to know that we took your comments to heart and invested in air conditioning this year for both bedrooms and the main living/kitchen area. Also, great news, the Lake Board voted to reduce renter fees for 2017 to $6/per person. We hope you will consider returning again and really appreciate the honest feedback!

The cabin was a perfect setting for getting away from everyday life. We really enjoyed the lake and appreciated the beach towels and chairs that were provided. Our children were also excited to have a few toys and stuffed animals that were new to them to enjoy.

Very cozy retreat a small family or couple

  • 5 of 5

Jody, Bill and property manager Rick were the best. I felt like we were part of their family and we got to enjoy our family cabin for the weekend . Everything is there to have a wonderful time, even a very nice bottle of wine. Thank you for the wonderful memories.
