overall we were very impressed with the accommodations, with the Maguires very special people, a little hic cup, the bed in the second bedroom, queen mattress on a double box spring. My son in law kept rolling off the bed.

All in all great vacation. We were sad in leaving this haven of tranquility.

Owner's Response: Some days things get messed up - The new box spring & mattress arrived from Sears just before you checked in, the box spring was damaged, so our quick thinking cleaning crew refused the new box spring and made the bed up using the new mattress & older box spring Not wanting to bother our guests they waited until your check out day to install the new box spring. So when you arrive again next year we will do something special for you. "Thanks for bringing this to our attention," Best regards, The Maguires

Great Family Time in Canada!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family wanted an adventure in Nova Scotia and what an adventure we had! The house and location are straight out of a movie. The house (I believe) is over 150 years old, set on one of the most scenic pieces of property in the world. The views are to die for and change daily and sometimes hourly. When clear, you can see thousands of stars, countless lighthouses, and miles of ocean. When foggy, it is straight out of a suspense novel. Both were so fun to be a part of. For wildlife, we saw a bald eagle perched on the large rock right outside close to the water, Canadian geese, porpoises, and one seal that was right out in front of the house for hours (I sent Tom a picture which he might add to the listing).

We ate like kings when we were there. The local seafood was amazing! Best meal I have ever had.

The house is central enough for easy drives to Halifax, Mahone Bay, Lunenburg, and Kejimkujik National Park. We spent time at all four and really enjoyed each location. Peggy’s Cove Lighthouse is so close too!

Tom was great and made the trip memorable by really providing tailored advice for the family!!

Whalesback Cottage was all we expected and more!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I wanted time away to rest and enjoy nature. Whalesback Cottage proved to be as beautiful as the photos, offering a gorgeous view, great location and wonderful host hospitality. It is quaint, unique and comfortable. You can stay a week and see something new in the decor every day. There were great books on the local towns and very comfy seating and sleeping accommodations. When you arrive, Tom will introduce you to the house, the area and answer any questions you have. You will learn some interesting things from this long time resident. He lives right down the road and will get you anything you need and more. I think if I had asked for fresh goat's milk, he would have brought me a goat and milked it! He is that kind of a guy. We had mentioned a Keurig coffee maker when emailing him and lo and behold, he arrived with one on the night of our arrival. Fresh fruit and a ready to eat lobster were more of the goodies he surprised us with! He loves what he does and the people he meets and truly cares that your stay be the best it can be.

I like reviews that give me a sense of the place I will be living in so I will say, if you want a brand new, sterile house with granite counters and hotel type paintings, this is not the place for you. However, if you want a comfortable home setting with all the amenities (if something is lacking, call Tom!) and the charm of an older place full to the brim with character - this is the place for you. And I didn't even mention the incredible view of waves crashing on the rocks right outside the door and the amazing ocean breezes and sunsets!

The only complaint we had was one that was out of Tom's vast array of talents - he wasn't able to make the fog disperse! But an hour drive over to the Bay of Funday gave us sunshine and a day on the beach. Thanks, Tom, for all you did for us to make it a great week!

Whaleback Cottage is wonderful...

  • 5 of 5

Whaleback Cottage is really very nice. The views of the ocean from the living room and other rooms are great. The location next to Peggy's Cove protected area was ideal. We greatly enjoyed our stay and would return. The location is relatively private and quite. Great to kicking back and relaxing. Tom was very helpful and informative about the property and the area. We would definitely stay there again. Best, C&L

Location, location, location.

You cannot beat the location of Whalesback Cottage. The surroundings, the privacy, the areas to explore are outstanding. The cottage itself is in need of a little bit of TLC, stained wallpaper, window screens duct taped. You have to keep in mind, it is a cottage. The view and location really do help to balance out the few flaws. The room in the pictures with the 3 windows facing the ocean is exactly as seen in the picture (cushion covers on all 3 day beds are very stained, grab some large clean towels upstairs to lay on each one).

Our stay started out a little rough, housekeeping issues that were dealt with the next day. Thomas, who takes care of the cottage, did everything in his power to deal with the problems as quickly as possible. We had just come from an absolutely pristine, sparkling clean beach house in PEI (which was actually cheaper than Whalesback) so our expectations were high, it was a bit of a let-down. As mentioned, Thomas did his best to fix things. We left some suggestions regarding how to make the cottage more comfortable, and accommodating for future tenants. The 2 bdrms are both upstairs (slightly steep stairs) not conducive for people that have a difficult time climbing stairs. Both beds are low to the floor, one bdrm is a box spring and mattress on the floor and the other is a mattress on some sort of very low bed frame. (Thomas called me after and said that he would be taking my suggestions of raising the beds in the future). There were no lamps to read by in the bdrms or living room. Actually no table lamps at all. A note or sign needs to be put up warning tenants, "Do not leave any food, whatsoever, out. Put bread, chips, etc. away in refrigerator or microwave". The lobster untensils were missing, Thomas said that maybe the last tenant took them and he would be replacing them immediately. Personally, I believe all of these things should be looked into prior to the next tenant arriving.

The location and view really are amazing and we enjoyed exploring down on the rocks out front. I would definitely return to Whaleback Cottage and recommend it, if the beds are raised and lamps brought in, & housekeeping issues dealt with. Again, Thomas did his very best to accommodate us, was available to try to help deal with the problems we encountered.

This review wasn't written with the intent to dissuade travelers, it is an amazing location. I'm sure Thomas has already taken care of the few problems

Owner's Response: As this was the start of the rental season things did happen that are not normal.. The country mouse was immediately asked to leave by a professional firm We agree re /cushion covers & they are presently being replaced, one bed is being replaced . The master bedroom bed is a custom hand crafted & low by design "most guests say they would like to buy it" or one like it. Whaleback Cottage is the oldest house in the area thus the step stairs. but with substantial handrails it really adds to the charm. This is really the first criticism we have received. Any comments that we receive are appreciated & will make Whaleback Cottage even a better place to stay.

Jaw dropping beauty!!! Cute well stocked cottage with breathtKing views.

  • 5 of 5

This was one of our favorite homes that we have rented through VRBO. Your hosts Tom and Donna just down the road see to your every need and have so many suggestions and stories for your visit. The windows in the living room give you views of the Atlantic from three sides. The area is filled with cute towns, Peggy's Cove, Lunnenburg, and the beautiful Mahone Bay. You must eat in Oh My Cod! In Mahone Bay. Esther's seafood chowder is delicious as is everything we tried. You will love this house and the area.
