It is one of many of the nicer units we own or manage, including two bedroom ocean front units, 1 bedroom ocean front units, and 1 bedroom ocean view units. It is fully equipped for a comfortable stay of several days to a month or more. Be sure to look at the video tour. The link to the video is the arrow or partial image to the left of the main picture above. The video gives a complete tour, and shows how nice this condo is. If this one is not available for the dates you need, one of our others probably is,since we have 12 one bedroom ocean view units, 6 one bedroom ocean front units, and 4 two bedroom ocean front units available, all listed on VRBO.

The Kona Reef is only 1 1/2 blocks to town, so you don't have to drive every time you want to go to a restaurant or shop. It is the ideal location in Kona, and moderately priced to fit your budget.

Not fancy, but pefectly okay for us!

  • 4 of 5

We occupied Kona Reef Unit F25 for 7+ weeks in February and March of 2018. We had an enjoyable stay and, overall, were satisfied with the unit. We are not particularly fussy or demanding tenants. If the place is clean and reasonably well-equipped, we are perfectly content to put up with a few minor inconveniences. Hang loose!

We have stayed at the Kona Reef many times--always in a different unit. The F building is very much exposed to noise, both from Alii Drive and the parking lot. It is annoying how many people stand around in the parking lot and engage in loud conversations when arriving late at night or early in the morning. The worst thing, as mentioned in other reviews, is the recycle trucks which arrive like clockwork at 0400 almost every morning and spend 15-20 minutes dropping containers of broken glass etc into an apparently empty truck bed. It was bad enough when we were in the E building. From the F building, it sounds like they are right outside your bedroom window! It's also a fair walk to the pool and to the garbage dumpsters but that is mitigated somewhat by the elevator.

Our unit itself could definitely use some upgrading. The bathroom and kitchen are pretty dated. One burner on the stove top was only marginally functional. We reported it to the office but nothing was ever done about it. There was a shortage of glassware (but plenty of plastic for pool use) and silverware was sparse. We seldom used the dishwasher because we'd have run out of utensils in two days. But all that didn't really matter that much to us. The facilities, while a bit tired, were perfectly adequate for our needs. A large, relatively new, flat-screen TV on a wall mount was a nice upgrade. We added a few "upgrades" of our own, including a small waffle-maker, a stove-top griddle for pancakes, and a new frying pan. Part of our policy of trying to leave every place we rent just a little better than we found it.

On the plus side, the unit managers were extremely easy to work with and we are happy to be renting another one of their units next year. The rates for this year's unit were quite reasonable as well. The office staff was invariably friendly and welcoming--far different from previous years when Castle was there and the office staff always treated us as if we were interrupting and bothering them.

If you are willing to put up with a few minor issues in order to obtain a more reasonable rate, you will be happy with the Kona Reef and this unit.

As publisized

The condo was just as described in the post. Staff and the office personnel were helpful. Check in and out went smoothly. I would note that the air conditioner is very noisy and clothes washer was finicky. I informed the office about the washer so maybe they figured it out.

Great location, property needs a lot of updates, management staff could do better

  • 3 of 5

What we loved: price, location and views - it was reasonably priced in a great location with amazing ocean views

What we liked: kitchen was well equipped with utensils, all appliances were in working order except the toaster had dust in it.

What could be better: updates where the apartment doesn't look like it's stuck in the 90s. Working wall clock, enough toiletries, directions on what to do with trash, staff tried its best but they treated you with less importance since you are a vrbo...

Overall enjoyed our stay but we won't be staying here again.

Excellent condo stay

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed at this condo from Dec 18 to the 24th. There were plenty of utensils, plates, paper towels, bathroom towels and starter soaps and shampoos. Need more kitchen garbage bags. King size bed and sofa beds were excellent. Would definitely stayed again if visiting in the area.

Lovely place...great ocean breeze airflow

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed this unit. We have stayed in several at Kona Reef. This one captures the ocean breeze airflow in the best way! Great bed! Nice couch. Wish we could stay here next year but its already booked...looking forward to another stay here soon.

Needs some TLC

  • 3 of 5

The condo complex is well maintained on the outside. The pool area and common area looks good. The inside of the unit has everything you need to stay a week or more. It was cute at some point a few years ago. The mattress has deep ruts on both sides. The pull out bed is so bad to sleep on, they wanted to sleep on the floor. The dishwasher is rusted out inside. There is a strong mold smell in the bathroom, if you leave the door close and run the fan its not bad. There are a few electrical plugs that have arced and you can see the black around the plug in. This unit needs some TLC and update these items and we would have raised they rating. I gave it a 3 and wanted to give it a 2. I didn't think a 2 would be fair, because if these items were brought to a higher standard I would have given it a 4. The lady in the office has been wonderful on anything we needed or asked. None of the items I mentioned above was brought to anyones attention because they all worked, but worn out.

Here is my biggest complaint. Before I got here I signed a document agreeing I would not hold the owners responsible for any thefts that may or may not happen. I had to sign it again when I got here. The front door has a dead bolt lock on it, but we do not get a key to it. When you are gone we can only use the push button lock to secure the unit. I did ask the office for a key and was told we don't get one. I did not feel safe leaving our stuff inside with only a push lock on the door. Anyone with a credit card could get in within seconds. No one did break in and we were safe. We did not feel safe not being able to lock up the unit with a dead bolt while we were gone.
