The condo is nice and cozy. Great view of the ocean while sitting on the patio.
Air conditioner was a plus. It didn’t cool the bedroom very well but the extra fans helped.
I would consider renting it again.
Very close to shopping and the restaurants.
Perfect location to walk to restaurants, shopping and excursions. Property was very well kept (pool, hot tub & bbq area). Condo was nice and served it's purpose well, it's a little outdated but clean and was fine for us.
Great location, Great Ocean views, Private Laini
We had some start up problems with a number of things but maintenance staff (Thanks Brian) did a great job of helping us out. The elevator only worked off and on but we managed although one of our party of three had difficulty with stairs, in the end he dealt with it and managed the stairs with help. There was some traffic noise from Ali'i Drive.
But we loved just about everything about this condo in spite of some difficulties. The view from the laini was superb, we could see the pool, the beach with the surfers, the boats on the ocean, the outrigger canoes, the Cruise Ships.
The sunsets were fabulous. The laini was very private and we enjoyed out meals and drinks in the evening. In the morning we watched the fascinating bird activities on the roof eaves. Wonderful ocean breezes helped keep us cool
We enjoyed the pool and hot tub and we took full advantage of the bbq facilities by the pool.
We enjoyed being close to the action on Ali'i Drive where we could access shops and restaurants and watch the joggers and bicyclists.
It was a great starting place for many tours across the island, to Volcano, South Point, Hilo area, and the beach resorts to the north or to Mauna Kea.
We really enjoyed our stay here.
Thank you to all at Kona Reef!
Not fancy, but pefectly okay for us!
We occupied Kona Reef Unit F25 for 7+ weeks in February and March of 2018. We had an enjoyable stay and, overall, were satisfied with the unit. We are not particularly fussy or demanding tenants. If the place is clean and reasonably well-equipped, we are perfectly content to put up with a few minor inconveniences. Hang loose!
We have stayed at the Kona Reef many times--always in a different unit. The F building is very much exposed to noise, both from Alii Drive and the parking lot. It is annoying how many people stand around in the parking lot and engage in loud conversations when arriving late at night or early in the morning. The worst thing, as mentioned in other reviews, is the recycle trucks which arrive like clockwork at 0400 almost every morning and spend 15-20 minutes dropping containers of broken glass etc into an apparently empty truck bed. It was bad enough when we were in the E building. From the F building, it sounds like they are right outside your bedroom window! It's also a fair walk to the pool and to the garbage dumpsters but that is mitigated somewhat by the elevator.
Our unit itself could definitely use some upgrading. The bathroom and kitchen are pretty dated. One burner on the stove top was only marginally functional. We reported it to the office but nothing was ever done about it. There was a shortage of glassware (but plenty of plastic for pool use) and silverware was sparse. We seldom used the dishwasher because we'd have run out of utensils in two days. But all that didn't really matter that much to us. The facilities, while a bit tired, were perfectly adequate for our needs. A large, relatively new, flat-screen TV on a wall mount was a nice upgrade. We added a few "upgrades" of our own, including a small waffle-maker, a stove-top griddle for pancakes, and a new frying pan. Part of our policy of trying to leave every place we rent just a little better than we found it.
On the plus side, the unit managers were extremely easy to work with and we are happy to be renting another one of their units next year. The rates for this year's unit were quite reasonable as well. The office staff was invariably friendly and welcoming--far different from previous years when Castle was there and the office staff always treated us as if we were interrupting and bothering them.
If you are willing to put up with a few minor issues in order to obtain a more reasonable rate, you will be happy with the Kona Reef and this unit.
Great location, property needs a lot of updates, management staff could do better
What we loved: price, location and views - it was reasonably priced in a great location with amazing ocean views
What we liked: kitchen was well equipped with utensils, all appliances were in working order except the toaster had dust in it.
What could be better: updates where the apartment doesn't look like it's stuck in the 90s. Working wall clock, enough toiletries, directions on what to do with trash, staff tried its best but they treated you with less importance since you are a vrbo...
Overall enjoyed our stay but we won't be staying here again.
The condo was just as described in the post. Staff and the office personnel were helpful. Check in and out went smoothly. I would note that the air conditioner is very noisy and clothes washer was finicky. I informed the office about the washer so maybe they figured it out.
Volcano is 92 miles (2 1/2 hour drive) away
