This 1 BR Condo is a lovely, private, even romantic, GARDEN VIEW CORNER UNIT, with a good partial OCEAN VIEW. Two walls of glass look out from the living room to private, tropical gardens and to the West a partial ocean view. Lanai's are on the West and North sides surrounding the unit. It is the only true 1 BR unit at Kona Shores (separate BR). The unit is also in the most PRIVATE AREA of the complex--the northwest corner of the facility--furthest from Alii Dr. and nearest the ocean. Kitchen and Bathroom have been completely REMODELED in 2015 and 2016. Wi-Fi is provided, and there are 2 wall air conditioners; one in living room near kitchen--the 2nd in the bedroom. The OCEAN-SIDE POOL is perhaps the best for size and View along Alii Drive.

Enjoy DINING at the corner of the west and north covered patios and watching green day geckos in the golden-fruited palms and plants very nearby. A little breeze keeps the 80 degree plus weather comfortable in the afternoons. Then take a dip down at the OCEAN-SIDE POOL that perches on a lava point, or walk to the sea on the concrete path along the pool to watch the sunset to the West or over Kailua pier at the other side of the Bay.

This condo features a new tile entry and new tile flooring in the SEPARATE ROOM KITCHEN and bathroom. Granite counter-tops surround all sinks and provide surfaces for all cabinets. The good quality wood cabinets are new in each of the rooms. In the kitchen there is a new large refrigerator, a newer gas stove, a microwave, coffee-maker and a complete complement of kitchen utensils, plates, etc. The kitchen window looks out on the end of the West Lanai.

The LIVING ROOM has two walls of glass (North and West) looking out at the private view of tropical gardens. On the North there is 6 ft. of Ginger and Palms, then 30 ft of sloping down landscaping of property next to ours. LR furniture includes a padded, rattan sofa and loveseat; a flat-screen TV, Cable TV, DVD, VCR, a closet, and shelves for books. Air conditioner, ceiling fan, and a floor fan (if needed) keep it cool in this comfortable unit. This 1st floor unit is cooler than roof-top 2nd floor units due to the extra "insulation".

The separate Bedroom has a Cal-King bed, a chest of drawers, an air conditioner, a ceiling fan, and a GLASS WALL AND PATIO DOOR looking out on the North tropical garden area. The large Bathroom is off of the BR. It has a sink area, a new shower/tub and double closets containing linens and supplies. Note: Secondary sleeping arrangements are unusual. There is a double futon-sofa, convertible to bed, on the very private north patio between LR and BR and two single air mattresses for placement in the LR (and inflation pump) if desired. some people bring the futon mattress into the living room at night--older children or adults may sleep outside on the patio. Also, there are two thick, single Coleman air mattresses in the BR closet along with a Coleman electric pump system. These can be used for sleeping in the living room at night and stood up against a wall (behind the sofa) during the day. All linens are provided.

Beach towels, mats, and ice chest are provided. The ASSIGNED parking spot is very nearby, about 6 feet below the unit where only 2 parking spots exist (the 2nd for our 2 BR 2 BA unit above). You'll have no searching for a parking spot. Laundry facilities are very nearby. This is a Non-Smoking unit and Pets are NOT allowed.

The Condo is at Kona Shores, which is 1 mile south of Kailua village (and immediately south of a larger complex, Sea Village) on the OCEAN-SIDE of Alii Drive. The address is 75-6008 Alii Dr., Kailua-Kona, HI 96740. We also have a spacious 2 BR 2 BA Condo (VRBO #10605) on the same corner at Kona Shores (2 story facility); and a private Studio Condo (VRBO #10597) near this 1 BR unit in case you need more accommodations.

About Glen

Ginny is now a retired Nurse, having practiced in several specialties and taught Nursing at the College level for many years; 20 yrs at San Jose State Univ. (Professor) and Sonoma State Univ. She loves out-doors, back-packing, swimming, and since our Honeymoon (photo) snorkeling. Glen is a retired business executive of Pharmaceutical and more recently Biotechnology companies. He has a pharmacy degree and an MBA. Growing up he participated in several sports and later focused on water-skiing, snorkeling, and back-packing. Both of us were born in California--she in Oakland, he in Santa Cruz. We both attended college at UC Berkeley and UCSF. Glen got his MBA at Harvard. Our most favorite vacations are to Ginny's family cabin in Yosemite and our Hawaii properties. We live in a house that we completed building in 2000 on Glen's family mountain-top property in Soquel (Santa Cruz), CA

Why Glen chose Kailua-Kona

Over the years Glen traveled to Hawaii many times, mainly Oahu, Maui, and Kauai. Ginny and Glen went to several Hawaii islands on their Honeymoon in 1985. (Picture is at Kona Village) We have owned a time-share in Waikiki, a lovely condo at Poipu Beach in Kauai, and several vacation and long-term condos on the Big Island. Our favorite place to visit became Hawaii for the sports (e.g. snorkeling), sites all over the island, variety of scenery, birds, and the fact that this island is not yet ruined by Tourism and population. We now own properties only in KONA.

What makes this condo unique

We stayed at Kona Shores annually since 1985 (now over 30 years). We loved the PRIVACY of the North wing of this complex. In 1998 the lovely northwest, first floor, corner unit became available. Glen had seen it while helping a renter fix screens. We were lucky enough to buy this unit. We love the open feel of all the glass, the tropical gardens, the intimacy, a good partial ocean view and the very private location within the complex. (We are told that this special unit was built by the original contractor of Kona Shores for one of his relatives.)

Our first visit to the Big Island was so enjoyable. Our favorite activities included the Waipi'o Valley and Snorkeling.

Your Condo was the perfect "home away from home" in Kona. We were so pleased. My parents have stayed for years at the Hale Kona Kai and were very impressed with #116. Their condo is a bit noisy.

We love the fact it was so private and quiet. Our favorite part was sleeping on the futon at night with nice Hawaiian breezes--we loved it that we could sleep outside. That was great. That's a wonderful asset of the condo.

I liked walking on the soft carpet with my bare-feet.

The kitchen was so pleasant to cook in. We loved eating on the porch (lanai) and watching the bird feeding frenzy.

very nice property in a convenient location.

We very much enjoyed our stay. Everything was neat and clean. We especially enjoyed having breakfast on the patio. Every morning a variety of birds would visit looking for a handout. This condo is a corner unit so it is very private with a back patio running along two sides of the unit. The only small negative is that it is directly across from some type of generator/power unit that we think has something to do with the solar panels. They run all night and those with sensitive hearing might be bothered by the noise. Otherwise it was great and we would stay again if we come back to the Big Island.

Owner's Response: We have never heard the noise across from us at night. The laundry is right across the hall (most convenient); our wall is insulated where it might make noise, and the laundry is closed at 9;00 p.m. Perhaps this was a temporary occurence. So, we will have to listen for the noise on our next trip, and see if it can be eliminated or minimized. We'll check with the on-site Manager. Glen

Conveniently located condo for a max of 2 people

We went rented this one bedroom condo for ourselves and our two grown kids. It is conveniently located on Ali’i drive, only minutes away from downtown Kona. The master bedroom, which also houses the only bathroom, has no door on it so there is a lack of privacy if two couples are traveling together. Our kids, my son and his girlfriend, had to sleep either on a futon on the lanai outside (which by the way had some local cockroaches in it) or on 2 blowup mattresses that were found in the closet. We were under the impression that the living room couch was a fold out bed and that the bedroom had a door –Neither of which turned out to be reality. The L-shaped lanai was rather narrow and had not been tended to recently. There was a lot of dirt behind the futon & the plants were growing into the space. It was hard for us to eat outside without getting bitten by little bugs in the plants.

The furniture and bathroom needed an update.

All in all, the kids made do with their pseudo-bed and the king size bed in the room was very comfortable.

The location is convenient but there’s only a very small ocean view.

So if you’re looking for a good location and reasonable price this would be OK for two people at most.

Home away from home

We stayed at the condo mid December, 2017. It surpassed our expectations and was a very comfortable place to stay in Hawaii. Close enough to walk to town, great price, and loaded with amenities. Clearly the owners pay attention to the details and work hard to make your stay wonderful. Some positives for other travelers...

1. Condo itself was very clean and comfortable. It's on the first floor so stays very cool (we never used A/C even). Bed was king size (there were 2 of us), and very comfortable.

2. A nice kitchen with a bunch of different pots, utensils and pretty much everything you need to make meals there.

3. Outdoor space has nice plants and hosts a variety of birds. Place a slice of fruit at the base of the posts and you can watch geckos come and tongue it.

4. Conveniently located within the complex. Laundry is right across the hall. Parking spot is right next to condo.

5. Tons of supplies. We found fins that fit that we were able to use for snorkeling during our stay, coolers for food, and much more.

6. Owners supplied a packet of info with recommended activities, snorkeling spots, dining, etc... Overall they went the extra mile.

You will love your stay at this place!

Nicely appointed, recently renovated and very well stocked.

We stayed for 12 nights and really enjoyed it. The grounds are very well kept and the suite is mostly fresh. New bathroom and kitchen are very nice.

My only suggestions would be faster internet and installing laminate floor instead of carpet

Owner's Response: Our only comment is that laminate floor in Living Room and Bedroom would feel cold (and hard) to the feet. A number of visitors over the years have commented that they loved the feel of the soft, short pile carpeting on their feet and between their toes. (Note: Shoes/sandals are to be removed when entering the unit for any time.) Also, first floor has concrete under the sub-floor and flooring, which is hard and cold.

Great Condo!

We loved the condo, very roomy, good bed, great location. We enjoyed visiting different beaches and touring the area. The owners gave us good information for the area and for the island as to things to see, places to visit and spots to eat. We didn't care much for the pool because of the abrasive bottom in it. I lost some skin off one toe because of the bottom of the pool. The pool was okay, just don't try to stand up. We had a problem with the ceiling fans and Glen was very responsive in getting the problem fixed. We used the ice chests and some of the snorkeling supplies with the condo. Thanks for a nice visit. Hope to get back again.

Owner's Response: Future Visitors: We have owned and operated this Condo as a Vacation Rental since 1998, so almost 20 years. The ocean-side pool is one of the greatest features of this smaller complex. The pool is large enough for swimming--a very good size. We've never had a complaint about the surface of the bottom of the pool before. The somewhat rough surface (haven't noticed particularly) is standard practice to prevent users from slipping when standing or playing at the shallow end. The pool is in great condition and the surround and pool surface were redone about 5 years ago. It is kept-up daily as the maintenance at Kona Shores is superb. (They even keep-up our Tropical Garden on two sides of our secluded corner unit.) We had an elderly visitor who came to our Studio Unit for about 10 years continuously in the 2000's. She said that she and her husband had stayed in almost all Condos along the 5 mile stretch of Alii Drive from Kona to Keahou over the many years they visited Kona before he passed away--and that Kona Shores had the Best Pool of any of the other facilities. This was the most quiet and relaxing place.

During this trip we had spent some time in Honolulu and Hilo. Of all the places we stayed, this one was very clean and it had an ocean view which made staying there so relaxing that we really didn't venture out much. We would definitely stay here again!.
