A unique tropical jungle experience amongst magical gardens and rainforest.

Bedrooms 5
Space 15,000 sq. ft.
Property type house
Minimum Stay 1 - 2 nights

About the property

25 acres of lush gardens and rainforest, volcano views and spring fed pools.

Princesa de la Luna 'Eco Lodge' experience is everything one imagines a stay in Costa Rican paradise to be. The house ,complex perches on the edge of the valley providing incredible views of the the jungle spread out below and the volcano looming over the far side of the valley.

VRBO specialises in Vacation house rentals .. we are an Ecolodge and also offer bedrooms individually.... vrbo assumes renting the whole Ecolodge.. Whereas we can offer individual rooms.

These views were one of many reasons that NBC chose to shoot part of their reality show, 'Love In The Wild,' here. 'Highly, highly recommend it for groups and families...'

The Ecolodge provides a unique lifestyle experience by social integration with the local community and we like to emphise this importance as we are not a standard hotel.

The kitchen/dining room area accommodates up to 30 people. There you will often find bunches of bananas and coconuts hanging from hooks and ready to be used. Large, locally made wooden tables provide functional preparation and dining area and there are propane and wood fired stoves as well as a microwave, toaster and coffee maker. There is also a brick grill/oven with a motorized spit large enough for a full pig or a half dozen chickens if you decide to have a party. The kitchen has everything that you need to prepare your own meals.

Or you can take it easy like most of our guests do and let us do the cooking for you! Meals are family style and dishes are decided based upon what is fresh and available. Breakfasts are $7/person and typically include eggs made the way that you like them, beans and rice, (a staple of every Costa Rican meal,) mountains of fresh fruit, fried plantains, bread or arepas, (south American 'pancakes' with or without syrup,) fresh juice and tea/coffee. Lunches and dinners are $10 and $15/person respectively and feature salads, fresh produce, hand made sauces, rice and beans, beef, pork, chicken or fish, fresh fruit and juices, local cheese, deserts and tea/coffee. The food is regularly described by guests as the best of their entire trip. Notice needs to be given the day before for breakfasts and in the morning for lunches/dinners. There are also a large number of restaurants and other dining options available.

There are a variety of ways for you to enjoy your time here including MILES of maintained paths created over the course of nine years. The paths are lined with carefully selected plants and the forests have been very carefully maintained to achieve a blend of cultivated fruit and sustainable gardening, park land and virgin forest.

By using proper plants and sustainable permaculture techniques, we've achieved a unique experience here. Maintained grounds gradually give way to more rustic views, which gradually blend into permanent, untouched, virgin jungle. One of the trails ends at a stream that cuts its way down through heavy plant growth and a unique, 'weeping wall' of black earth that is covered in a variety of orchids.

Along the way you'll discover not one but two swimming pools. One is slightly more conventional with maintained plants and gardens around it and is fed by pure spring water. The other is hidden at the end of a hike to the bottom of the valley next to the stream. It is fed directly from the little stream, there are NO CHEMICALS used in either. Just a continual supply of fresh, clean water flowing into the pools and then back out into the stream.Right now the main swimming pool is functional and swimable but needs tiles to be replaced and general maintenance so it is not as well presented as in the fotos!! Sometimes we have difficulty changing the water as from the Natura Spring it can take time to fill up...but most of the time it is usable..

Two German guests recently described their hike to the waterfall and enjoyment of the river pool as the best thing that they've done so far in Costa Rica, saying that the river pool looked as if it had been built by elves and had a 'feel of magic to it.' The River Pool is only sometimes available, as it is prone to flooding after heavy rains. However both are excellent spots for secluded picnics and relaxed enjoyment... either alone or with special friends.

Back at the house you'll find that the line between indoor and outdoor living has been blurred. Huge bedrooms open out onto balconies and a variety of sitting areas, all of which are appointed with interesting curios, wall art and a profusion of plants. Several of the rooms are connected via open hallways lined with tropical gardens instead of actual walls, providing the perfect balance between security and the impression of living right in nature itself.

The natural flow from the balconies into the dining/kitchen area take you past a small, bamboo paneled bar that is right next to a sitting area with a stereo and which easily converts into a dance floor. Further down is the large hot tub, just above a covered 'Ranchero' that is perfect for meditation, yoga or martial arts practice. The hot tub is built into the actual building and is quite large, so it takes several hours to warm. Please give notice if you intend to use it so that it can be made ready for you!

The hanging bunches of bananas attract toucans and other birds. While writing this I was watching a Keel Billed Toucan munching away on a plantain with great enthusiasm. Other animals in the area include kinkachoos, a dizzying variety of lizards and lots of other animals.

A guest recently described his experience here by saying, 'It takes a minute to sink in that this is not a zoo and not an animal reserve. It's an actual house, right in the middle of paradise and all of these birds, animals and everything else are real, here and natural!' I think that his comments sum up the experience here quite nicely.

We are only 5 kilometers away from down town La Fortuna, meaning that you are minutes away from all of the typical activities and tours that you might enjoy including:

* Hanging Bridges

* Zip Lines

* Hot Springs

* ATV and other rentals

* Butterfly Conservatory

* Eco-Snake Zoo

* Horseback Riding

* Volcano Hikes

* Rafting

* Canyoning and Rappelling

* Bird Watching

* Swimming

* Much more

We're happy to book activities on your behalf and can save you 5 - 10% if booked in advance.

You'll find this house ideal for group getaways like family reunions, corporate retreats, group vacations, sports teams, civic groups etc.

This place has been a labour of love for a decade and it is truly, one of a kind. I'm certain that you'll love your stay here and I'm looking forward to meeting you.

Very beautiful place. Great food. Worth the rough road to get there.

Basic rooms. Beautiful decks that invite to linger. View of Arenal if the clouds allow, even if not the view of the rainforest is serene and peaceful. Large grounds with hiking. Natural spring pools but you have to walk there first. Very helpful staff. Very good food.

What an adventure!

  • 5 of 5

My family, including my husband, his retired parents and his sister and her husband, all traveled to Costa Rica for a wedding at an all inclusive property in Guanacaste. After the wedding, we wanted to extend our stay in Costa Rica. I've been to Costa Rica three times previously and I always love the area of Arenal the most. I wanted to show my family this part of the country. Give them a chance to experience the jungle. I started searching for homes to rent and that's when I came across this amazing place!

I read through the reviews and it is clear that the people who were expecting big name resorts did not like this place while everyone else did. If you are afraid of insects, or prefer a place with room service or elevators, then this is not for you. You are literally IN THE JUNGLE. But if you are one who loves the sounds of nature, learning about the habitat and the ability to walk right out your door and be on a hike to a waterfall, then this is your place.

Each of us couples hand our own "bungalow" (a room with bathroom that is detached from an actual house). Each bungalow had its own patio area that looked out into the jungle. The common area near the kitchen was incredible and really is the absolute meeting place for everyone who stayed there. I enjoyed a nap on a hammock too. We appreciate no sounds of city traffic. It's so peaceful!

When we arrived (and you'll truly want GPS to find it), we were met by Wilmer and William (who communicated with us by WhatsApp too) and they were so warm and welcoming. We had dinner the first and last nights there, breakfast each morning, and lunch the second day. The food is authentic, fresh and it didn't stop coming! We took the tour offered by William and Wilmer where we learned about all the amazing plants and wildlife in the surrounding area, hiked to a waterfall, took a dip in the natural spring pool and used local clay for a mud bath. They took pictures for us, helped us through the hike, etc. All you hear around you while staying there is wildlife, running water, etc. We had nightly tropical storms and even had an excellent view of the volcano.

We could easily spend the entire vacation at this Eco lodge. William had amazing recommendations when we wanted adventure too. We went white water rafting, went to the hot springs and went on a river boat tour for wildlife pictures. We love this place and will definitely be back!

A Happy Family

  • 5 of 5

My family of five (kids aged 7, 10, 12) stayed here for 3 nights. We loved it! The ecolodge is in the middle of the rainforest with views of Volcan Arenal. The physical space was perfectly rustic with lots of unique Costa Rican decor. We stayed in room 1 which opened up onto a porch with hammocks and a couch, blurring the lines between being indoors and outdoors. The kitchen and dining room are open as well and the cook makes delicious traditional Costa Rican meals with fresh fruit juice. Certainly worth it! One of our favorite parts of our stay was the guided walk that you can take with Will. It includes learning about all the flora and fauna, tasting the different fruits/herbs that grow on their property, a dip under a waterfall, a walk down the river, a mud bath and a swim in the naturally fed pool. It ended with a delicious lunch back at the ecolodge. We did not have a rental car and William was helpful and flexible with helping us get taxi's and even driving us himself. It is doable to stay here without a car but probably easier if you had a car rental. William was also helpful in setting up local activities. Just know that if you do that through them, you have to pay in cash. We stayed in four different places in Costa Rica over a two week periord and this was a favorite! The kids loved it and enjoyed the freedom to explore!

Owner's Response: Thanks for your Review ... Yes our idea is to offer a more authentic experience living on the edge of the jungle ...and with a capable and friendly team to give a family type atmosphere so it can also be a social experience as well as a adventurous and interesting stay...and also with good fresh food , local family style with twists ... we have a lot of homegrown products ,,We can organise all transport options ... of course more flexible and more freedom if a gust has a car ... but no problem either way.Everything is easily organised including the many tour options and tips so that there are many other activites, so plenty to do...

Friendly, helpful hosts that provide a most wonderful experience

  • 5 of 5

This was a true tropical experience for our family of 4! The dirt road leading to ecolodge was maintained, but would definitely recommend 4 wheel drive and travel in daylight for the first time. We were greeted by VERY friendly people. Room/bedding was clean, bathroom was clean (don't understand other poor reviews because I consider myself fussy about cleanliness. Clean should not mean "pristine and immaculate" that 4-5 star hotels provide, but truly clean and safe when staying in the middle of a rain forest). Didn't need A/C -fan in room was fine. One should expect wildlife in a rain forest. We had no problem with bugs in room. Saw no snakes. Did enjoy seeing a many types of birds. Arlen did point out poison frog that would run away unless approached quietly. Loved the dogs! Highly recommend tour of grounds, that we took with Willem & Arlen, which includes finding many herbs/plants that grow naturally here, showering under waterfall, traversing down IN the river, experiencing mud bath and swimming in a "natural" pool. GREAT FUN! Young children were in group and had no problem as staff here take care to keep everyone safe. Going from our cabin to main house area was safe any time of the day or night. Would probably not venture out on hiking paths that are further out on grounds at night unless you are adventurous or accompanied by staff if you are afraid of critters that naturally come out at night, even though they will run away FROM you-not toward you. Ate many meals here, which staff are willing to provide with sometimes very little notice. Highly recommend eating at ecolodge if you don't like to drive dirt road in the dark. Had very good breakfasts and dinners at reasonable price in eating area where you can share conversation with other guests. Maria made the best coffee we had in Costa Rica! They have FREE WiFi!! Not even our luxury beach condo had that! After all our Costa Rica experiences, this place truly is memorable. If you want to experience living in a Costa Rica home, which is actually more upscale than a lot of locals live, experience the nature of a Rain Forest, and have extremely friendly people who become like your parents to take care of you to keep you safe and happy-this is truly an awesome place to come. Recommend repair work to few of the pools, but this was not even necessary for us to have an awesome experience. Made right choice to come & would return. Thanks Will, Willem, Arlen & Maria for working so hard to make us happy.

Where do you live?

Great place with awesome hosts!

  • 5 of 5

We had a beautiful drive from Alajuela capped off by the last 2 Ks being over a well maintained gravel road. This lead to the excitement of Princesa De La Luna and its eco lodge feel. We arrived with open arms from our hosts William and Will who immediately lead us to our house which had an awesome jungle view. The beds were comfortable and the room was clean. A/C was surprisingly not necessary. We enjoyed many meals during our 4 night stay. They were convenient, tasty and of good value. Sharing meals with the other guests was a bonus. Everyone was happy to share the previous days adventures. William was a wealth of knowledge on the local activities and was happy to book excursions for us in advance, some at a discount. I recommend the property hike/lunch combo. Will led us around teaching about the local plants and animals. The hike took us thru the river to 2 waterfalls and finished off with a jungle mud bath. Great fun!!! This was our intro to Costa Rica and we feel that we made a great choice. We would stay there again and hopefully bring friends and family.

About Jonathan Davies

I don't like to talk about myself all that much, but I'll say that I came to Latin America 20 years ago and fell in love with it. Over the course of that time I was a financial consultant se in almost every country in Latin America . When i saw this property, there was no road no electricity no water. I purchased the land and sine then it has been a challenging project ,not easy at all...and has required an immense effort to develop and get to its its current level..The challenge is ongoing and our miantenance burden is muh greater than a normal hotel. Everyone thought that I was mad for several years. Of course no one thinks so now! :)

Jonathan Davies purchased this house in 2001

Why Jonathan Davies chose La Fortuna

It's quite simply stunning. The volcano view is everything in this part of the country and I have incredible ones. And then of course there is the type of soil and other growing conditions; I intended from the start to create a blended perma-culture environment and so it needed certain growing conditions... light, rainfall, elevation etc. And of course there is very little virgin jungle in this area outside of the protected parks. Much of what is referred to as 'primary jungle' around here is actually second growth forest. So it was both a privilege and a huge challenge to incorporate nearly inaccessible, true jungle into the project. But the results are fantastic.

What makes this house unique

It is very difficult to find houses with the ability to accommodate larger family groups. While there are plenty of homes which can accommodate up to 10 or 12, groups any larger usually require renting multiple properties at significant expense. Here your entire group of up to 23 people can be accommodated perfectly comfortably. There are even overflow options available at reasonable prices. This means being able to keep your group together without having to worry about coming and going to multiple properties. This is something very valuable, for instance when there are children in a group and the adults wish to spend a little time together after the kids have gone to sleep. Since we don't charge any more for having more people stay, the property also represents tremendous value! To provide beds for the same number of people in a hotel would cost several times the price. At the same time the design is such that smaller groups or couples can rent and enjoy their individual quarters without fear of having their privacy intruded on by other guests nor of having theirs intruded upon. The unique architecture and layout provide unparalleled flexibility.
