Overview

About the property

A cozy village hide away, 1 bedroom efficiency, an easy walk to downtown.

This is a unique vacation rental for one or two people. Have the second floor all to yourself in the house where Inner Quest Yoga and Wellness Center operates on the main floor (generally 1 to 2 classes a day weekdays only). The Nook's entrance is separate from the hosts. The main room has a comfortable queen sized bed, loveseat, secretary's desk, dresser and Morris chair. The kitchenette is well equipped with a compact refrigerator, microwave, toaster, and Keurig coffee maker, and other kitchen essentials. The Nook includes a large private bath with a lovely slipper soaking tub with hand held shower and the use of a full bath with stand-up shower directly down the stairs. During the warmer months there is A/C and guests may use the front deck with bistro table and chairs.

Your hosts, Mary and Kevin Bartel, reside in the lower level. They honor their guests privacy but, are happy to assist in making your visit comfortable and making recommendations for outings and dining, etc.!

Guests best suited for The Nook will appreciate the quiet nature of the facility, that there is a shoes off policy, no smoking permitted in or on the premises, and that pets are unable to be accommodated. Check-in time 4 PM (many times earlier - communicate with the hosts to find out), check-out 11 AM.

Wellness Center Offerings

Guests are welcome to attend group yoga, stretch, meditation and tai chi classes complimentary. Appointments may be made for private yoga sessions, yoga therapy, massage or bodywork sessions. Check the bodyworks link above for a menu of services and booking information. As an added benefit to our guests you may receive a 75 minute Swedish Massage or Shiatsu session for the one hour rate.

About our location

The Nook is conveniently located a short walk from Saranac Lakes’ downtown shops, restaurants and artist galleries. The building behind The Nook is BluSeed Studios, featuring art exhibitions, workshops and live music performances. Across the street kitty corner is a small park with a tennis court and basketball court. Less than a mile away is the towns’ municipal beach, park and picnic area at Lake Colby - always a lovely spot to watch the sunset and lower Saranac Lake boat launch, which gives access to the spectacular Saranac chain of lakes.

Saranac Lake

The town of Saranac Lake serves as a great vacation spot for outdoor enthusiasts, no matter the time of year! Nearby find great road biking, canoeing, hiking, fishing, snow shoeing and x-c skiing. Downhill skiers may explore Titus, Big Tupper and Whiteface Mountains each approximately 30 minutes away. Saranac Lake’s history continues as a health and wellness getaway location. Come see why Saranac Lake is one of the Northeast's pioneering health resorts and why a get away here in the Great North Woods is plain ole healing. Breath, relax, feel and be.

It’s not really a small space … but certainly a cozy place ... one guest said we may want to put a warning on our site - 'don't be surprised if you end up extending your stay!'

We call the upstairs of our home The Nook, as for us it is two floors above where we dwell and it just has a special good feeling to take refuge. The slanted lower ceilings, the lighting, the feng shui gives us that sense. We wish to share the charm of The Nook at Inner Quest with you - visitors, friends, and family. Perhaps when you come, you’ll share in your words how The Nook provided shelter upon return from your ADK outings.

May you be happy, Mary & Kevin

About Mary Bartel

We love the Adirondacks. We moved here together in 1988 so we could live an active yet peaceful mountain lifestyle. We enjoy all seasons playing outdoors: hiking, biking, walking, canoeing, x-c skiing and snow shoeing. Let us help you fall in love with the Adirondacks.

Mary Bartel purchased this house in 2005

Why Mary Bartel chose Adirondack Mountains

The property was purchased in 2005 to open a Yoga and Wellness Center where locals and visitors could find options for rejuvenating themselves. In June 2013, Kevin and I downsized, sold our home and built an apt. in the basement so we could save money and travel more. In Jan. 2014 the upstairs became available for rent and we decided to turn it into a vacation rental. We felt the nature of the facility, the special services we offer here, and the convenient location to the downtown area would work well for many visitors. We enjoy offering the space and meeting so many nice people.

What makes this house unique

The Nook is like home yet a floor below there are holistic services such as yoga, stretch, and tai chi group or private classes, yoga therapy, massage and other body work services available. The schedule of classes is light offering weekday classes where guests may participate at no extra charge.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Mary and Kevin,

We had a great time in Saranac Lake. We were able to enjoy the beautiful Adirondack Mountains and Lakes. On any vacation, there is always a need to come back to “home base” after a long day. The Nook provided a warm and comfortable place to rest. We especially liked

the meditation/yoga class provided. We would definitely

stay again!

Cozy and charming

  • 5 of 5

The Nook provided a wonderful and relaxing retreat for a 2-night midweek escape. My husband and I both loved and appreciated the little touches that Mary put into decorating and appointing the space. I particularly enjoyed the gorgeous slipper soak tub after a chilly hike up Cascade Mountain. Very relaxing. Highly recommend breakfast (and dinner) at the Blue Moon cafe. Honestly, the best meal that we've had out in a long time. We will be back for sure!

Excellent Place to Stay

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I really enjoyed our three night stay. This space was furnished very nicely, as we could kick back while planning our daily activities. We slept great as the bed was very comfortable. We were very impressed with all of the little details that this place provided, right down to the corkscrew hanging underneath the wine glasses. Some of the books that were provided in the room were very interesting. I skimmed through a book, "Cure Cottages of Saranac Lake", and I began to learn about the history and architecture of this little town. We really enjoyed breakfast at "The Blue Moon Cafe". We loved taking in the views of the gorgeous lakes and rivers surrounding the area. We also took a 10 mile trip over to Lake Placid and enjoyed milling around the shops and eating lunch. We really enjoyed our stay!

Perfect little retreat

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here for two nights and it was a lovely, restorative experience. The space is immaculate, the bed is a dream, and the whole space is as cozy as can be. Mary was wonderful too. There is also massage place downstairs that we took advantage of too-highly recommend all around. Thanks, Mary!

Nice clean great stay

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I spent two nights here while on a road trip through Penn and NY. We enjoyed our stay here very much. The location is about a five minute walk to downtown Saranac Lake. We walked downtown both nights we were there for dinner. Ate at the Left Bank Café and the Downhill Grill. Both locations were very good. Drove down to Lake Placid while we were there and had lunch at the Lake Placid Pub and Brewery. Also nice. Walked downtown Lake Placid and visited the Olympic ski jump. Make sure you go up to the top. Great views.

The Nook is very easy to find via our GPS. As noted this is the second floor location in a house with a business run out of. Private entrance to the steps to get upstairs to the Nook. I felt the size of the unit was terrific for the two of us. Nice breeze through the windows so we did not need to use the air conditioner. While there is traffic on the main street in front of the house, it was not loud or annoying. Granted, we were there in September and not during peak season. The facility was very clean and the bed was quite comfortable for us. Small refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker are in the hallway between the living area and bathroom. No stove but not an issue for us as we wanted to eat out each night. We met the owner, Mary, who is very nice. She has provided information on places to eat, things to do and places to visit. If you climb Mt Baker while there, it is an uphill trek but well worth the views. Do not hesitate to book the Nook. It is clean, cozy, in a good location. We felt very safe while there and even during our evening walks to downtown. Thank you Mary for allowing us to stay at the Nook.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much for the review. Like others you found the convenience of The Nook to walking downtown for dining and shops and as a nice hub for exploring, within close proximity, the village of Lake Placid for its attractions and more dining options. We take pride in proving a private, clean, cozy place to rest. My business, a very small yoga/wellness center, hosts a handful of classes during the week only (guests may attend for free) plus, private yoga therapy and meditation instruction. There is also massage and energy work available on site which can add to a holistic rejuvenating stay. We live onsite in the lower level, separate entrance, easily accessible if needed. Do come again!
