About Tancook Vacation Rentals

My wife and I own a family run business in Halifax, Nova Scotia. We wanted an oceanfront get away off the beaten track. We saw a listing for a property on Tancook Island and it was love at first sight.

Tancook Vacation Rentals purchased this house in 2013

Why Tancook Vacation Rentals chose Lunenburg

We were captivated by the island views, the scenery, the people and the relaxing ferry ride where we could leave our stressful lives on the mainland and enjoy the peace and uncomplicated island life.

What makes this house unique

We found that in rain or sunshine there is no better place to slowdown the pace of life then Big Tancook Island on majestic Mahone Bay. Big Tancook Island is steeped in a seafaring history and more information is available on:

This is Atlantic Canada!

  • 4 of 5

Lovely seaside home but view impeded by flotsam on shore and a large shed in line of sight.

The home itself is probably the nicest dwelling on the island and, trust us, you'll never be bored inside if weather socks you in.

This is one dear, quirky island well worth visiting but give it no less than a week, including off-island day trips and island exploration, to sink in.

Great sunrise!

Love the limo!

Another Great Visit to Tancook Island!

  • 5 of 5

This was our fifth visit to Tancook Island using the "Oceanfront Elegant Home" as our "Home Away from Home". We arrived on the island in the fog to find the car parked in its spot by the wharf, gassed and rearing to go! The first trip to Southeast Cove carried some of the luggage, the 16-month-old, her mother, grandmother and Auntie to open the house while the remaining two stayed at the wharf with the rest of the luggage to await the car's return for them. In no time at all we were all in residence, choosing our bedrooms and lighting the BBQ for our first meal. The next few days passed quickly as we rediscovered the many pleasures of this island paradise and enjoyed the fine, well appointed house which was ours to call home for a few days. And our 16-month-old went around shouting, "Happy! Happy" for 4 days!!! Thank you for making this wonderful adventure available to us!

Surfside Serenity

  • 5 of 5

When we chose to visit Nova Scotia this summer, we opted to see it a little differently: this involved selecting an out of the way place as a base for exploring. This rental proved the perfect base camp.

We were warmly welcomed aboard the ferry: the locals had a chuckle at a our 8 Rubbermaid bins filled to the brim. Once at the dock, a local man (Neil) offered to take our belongings to the rental for us - saving us numerous trips back and forth. The kindness and openness of these island folk is not to be underestimated. Salt of the earth people with goodness in their hearts and warm smiles every day.

The accommodations were exemplary. Sumptuous beds, comfortable sofas.

The children enjoyed the games room a plenty! Especially on our first three days here - when rain punctuated the days and nights. And, of course, thank heavens for Netflix and YouTube, and free Wi-if!

Through our past VRBO experiences, we pack the house to bring to the house: here, everything was furnished - from TP to soap to laundry detergent and fabric softener, to cleaning products and more. There was simply no need to bring all the gear we usually do.

We spent many days walking the coastline and meandering gravels roads. We came face to face with many white tail deer. We collected oodles of sea glass (mermaid tears) and searched for fossils at fossil beach.

TIme your mainland adventures right, (to / from ferry) to nearby towns of Chester, Lunenburg and of course Halifax.

The region is one waiting to be discovered. Still, selfishly, we hope Big Tancook remains lesser known so we can enjoy its serene quietude again in years to come.

5Star, no holds barred, a perfect island getaway.

Attentive and kind hosts (the Bouthiliers) with keen eye to detail, offering every luxury one could want.

Campfires by the water... It doesn't get much better than this.

Thank you for the memories.

Return Journey

  • 5 of 5

Our family enjoyed another quiet and peaceful vacation on Tancook Island. The weather was spectacular. We enjoyed the September sunshine during the day and the star filled skies at night. We missed the eclipse of the "blood" moon by two days and regret not having stayed the extra time to witness this celestial event with an unobstructed view of the Heavens. During our nightly fire pit blazes, we warded off the cool September air and managed, at least, to keep the fire side of our bodies warm enough to linger outside after dark to search the Milky Way for stars and constellations. We watched the jets streak overhead to the "eastern and western" as they raced towards their far distant destinations, glad we were in a little part of Heaven on earth that was peaceful enough to hear the sonic booms that followed them.

Thanks for Marybeth and Sherry who catered to our every need with efficiency and good humor.

We are already making plans for a fourth visit to this island retreat.

Coming Home to Tancook

  • 5 of 5

Being no stangers to the awe inspiring natural beauties of Big Tancook Island and enjoying kinship with the island's residents, our reason for renting this house was to rediscover the peace and contentment of our past island experiences of years ago. And rediscover we did! The Milky Way still lights the skies and illuminates the island at night. Sunrises and sunsets remain spectacular. Beach combing for treasures yet delights the soul. Enjoying the peace and quiet, hearing the ocean waves splash on the shore, sitting on a rock watching the tide come and go and seeing the island deer prancing across the fields all served to renew our love for Tancook. Added to all this was the delightful seaside home in which there was everything needed for our comfort and well being. Thank you to Marybeth, Sherry and Sandi for their warm welcome and for the care and concern they showered on us to ensure our stay was perfect in every way. Thank you to the owners who had the vision for this peaceful retreat and willingly shared it with us. Even though we arrived in Chester to discover our car's battery was dead, our enjoyment was not diminished! We are already looking forward to our next visit to 200 Big Tancook Island Road.

Tancook Island is a birdwatcher's paradise, has a swimming beach, endless wildflowers, incredible dark night skies and breathtaking sunrises and sunsets.

Our guests often ask when is the best time to visit Tancook Island? The answer to this question depends on your interests.

May – Lobster Fishing Season, is open from late November to May 31 annually, but May is a great time to visit if you would enjoy buying lobster from the wharf in Northeast Cove and cooking on the deck in preparation for an island feast. If you do like lobster, you’ll love ours, it is caught on the rocky shoals that surround “the Tancooks”. Our lobster is hard-shelled and full bodied, it is unusually sweet and tender. All these characteristics combined gives it a unforgettable and very distinct flavor.

June to October – Power Boaters and Sailing Vessels wishing to do a land-stay on the island will find Tancook’s Northwest Cove a great place to dock. We offer three night stays with wharf-side docking against lobster boats which are off season during the months of June to November. Visiting boats will be tied up as directed by the Harbour Authority of Tancook Island and must be able to show proof of full insurance in amount of $1 M in order to comply with the docking requirements. We will make your docking arrangements.

May to October – Chester Golf Club – These beautiful classic 18 – par 70 and 9 hole seaside courses are known to be the most scenic courses in Nova Scotia. In addition to the challenging play, you will see amazing vistas of the Atlantic Ocean, many of Mahone Bay’s 365 islands, and colorful sail boats tacking in the wind. The club house overlooks the bay and offers a pro shop and a restaurant with breakfast, lunch and dinner fares. For more information checkout or phone 902-275-4543.

The wild flowers are everywhere and carpet the landscape with pinks, purples, white and yellow. A true feast for the eyes, it is hard to imagine that so many varieties of flowers can grow on one small island. Come and see for yourself.

July & August – Junior and Adult Sailing School at the Chester Yacht Club – The unique sailing community of Chester offers junior sailing sessions from late June to the end of August. Registration for these popular programs starts in April for kids 6 to 17 years of age. Why not checkout the schools programs at or call 902-275-3747. Adult learn to sail programs are also offered during the summer months, so there is a program for everyone.

July & August – Beach Days – Remember those lazy days of summer and endless days spent on the beach. You can recapture your childhood or introduce your children to the experiences of beach combing for sea glass, checking out the life in our tidal pools or just walking with the wind in your face.

August 13 to 16 - Chester Race Week – Sail boats, large and small, from all over North America and beyond gather annually in Chester to compete and test their sailing skills. There are opportunities to join crews, enjoy the onshore festivities or just watch the races. Tancook offers a great vantage point for those wishing to watch the beautiful boats turn the bell buoy or round the shores of the island.
