Climate and Weather Information
Durango sits at 6512 feet above sea level and enjoys an ideal four-season climate with moderate temperatures year-round. Durango winters are usually mild and sunny with temperatures staying between 10 and 50 degrees. Despite Durango's snowfall averages about 71' each year, snow removal is manageable because Durango is sited in a low, sun-drenched valley. Spring brings warmer weather and rain (annual precipitation of 19' per year). Summer temperatures seldom climb more than the high 80s and rivers and reservoirs stay relatively full in summer, filled by melting snow from deep winter snows in the San Juan Mountains. Fall days are comfortably cool and dry, the perfect time for a mountain hike or a drive on one of the area’s Scenic Byways.
Durango Mountain Ski Durango Mountain Resort has four different terrain parks for everyone from the new boarder to the most advanced
• The Paradise Freestyle Arena will cure all of your rail-riding, big-air ills.
• The Pitchfork Terrain Garden is home to a 300 foot Half Pipe, plenty of rails, bumps, and a medium sized jump at the bottom for some serious air.
• Divine Comedy is located just above the base of the high speed 6-pack chairlift. It’s the perfect place for the experienced terrain park enthusiast.
• Angel's Tread is the newest terrain park complete with two 8 ft. flat boxes.
At the Heart of Purgatory Mountain Resort
Purgatory Village offers just about everything you'll need on your visit. Take in the majestic views of the San Juan Mountains while perusing a variety of shops and restaurants, and of course skiing or riding the beautiful mountain. The Village is the center of your vacation, where you can relax in a beach chair in front of Purgy's or watch the evening alpenglow over the Needles Peaks. [ Durango Winter Planning Guide ]

Interesting Fact
Purgatory Mountain came into its modern day name in 1776 when several Spanish explorers were traveling on a nearby river. Some of their party got lost, and their bodies were never found. The other travelers believed the souls of the lost men would be relegated to Purgatory, and from this legend was born the designation, Purgatory Mountain, which originally opened as Purgatory Resort in 1965 and now operates as the year-round Durango Mountain Resort. Following this legendary expedition, the river was named “El Rio de las Animas Perdidas” or the River of Lost Souls (now the Animas River.)
