Historic School Beautifully Restored As A 10 Bedroom 9 Bathroom Lodge
Our building has 10 large bedrooms each with 12 foot ceilings and hardwood floors. Eight of the bedrooms have their own individual bathrooms. The two bedrooms on the second floor share a full bathroom and also share an outside deck. The outside deck has incredible views of the mountains around Ouray and Telluride.
High speed Wi-Fi is provided free and keeping with the history theme of the historic school the school is a TV free zone. Hopefully without TV you won't be as inclined to be a couch potato. However like most of us if you have an addiction to your PDA (personal digital assistant) you are covered with our free high speed internet service.
Built in 1914 as the Uncompahgre School District 29, this facility was operated as a public school until its closure in 1986.
This historic building has been renovated into a beautiful lodge located in a wonderful scenic country setting.
The Old School Lodge boasts a great room with gas fireplace and wet bar which was the original school theater/gym/great room. An incredible and completely new and fully equipped commercial style kitchen invites the culinary gifted to create anything they can imagine.
The dinning area is currently arranged for comfortable dining seating for 22 but can easily be expanded.
Local music teachers use the building for their student recitals because we have a very special antique piano that is meticulously tuned. Our decor is reminiscent of school days past. The classrooms were converted into spacious bedrooms each with their own private bathrooms.
There are three king beds and ten queen beds conveniently spread among the nine bedrooms. Two additional boys and girls bathrooms have been remodeled from the original school house so that if you have company they can use these public styled bathrooms and not the private baths in the individual bedrooms.
Our Old School Lodge is located in the scenic and historic Uncompahgre River Valley. We are surrounded by many dramatic natural wonders including the Black Canyon National Park, Grand Mesa (World's largest flattop mountain) and the breathtaking San Juan Mountain range with its gently ascending Uncompahgre Plateau which extends west to Utah.
White water rafting, skiing, hiking, biking, fly fishing, boating, rock climbing, SUP boarding, sightseeing are just a few of the activities within a 65 mile radius of the lodge.
Whether gathering for a family reunion, church retreat, recreational club activity, business retreat or special occasion, the Old School Lodge provides a spacious, quiet location, where unforgettable memories are meant to be made.

About Albert Stowell

Albert Stowell purchased this Lodge in 2012
Why Albert Stowell chose Montrose County
The Old School Lodge was originally built in 1914 in order consolidate three small country school Districts (Colona, Jutten, and Uncompahgre Schools). In 1992 Richard and Barbara Helm bought the school building from the Montrose school district. The Helm's remodeled the building so that they could operated the property as a Bed & Breakfast and Event Center. During the 1920's through the 1950's the school was also used for Saturday night dancing and partying. The Stowells frequently stayed at the B&B when visiting Albert's family that lived nearby in Ouray county. The Stowell's fell in love with the Montrose community and especially with the historic potential of the Old School.

60th Anniversary Party
We rented the school for our parent's 60th wedding anniversary. It was perfect for us to stay in and also host the party. My entire family attended the Uncompahgre School as children, so it was also a fun school reunion. We had around 65 guests at the anniversary party, and there was plenty of room for everyone. The old school is very nicely renovated. It had everything we needed. I would highly recommend it.
The only place to stay if you are visiting Montrose. The house was perfect, well maintained and handled eight couples with ease. Thanks again to our hosts.
A unique well planned restoration. The Old School Lodge was everything our group expected, the spacious bed room/baths, furnished kitchen and huge dining/lounge area gave everyone space to lounge. The Old School Lodge is located in the center of SW Colorado, so much to see.
"Have an urge to go back to school-THE OLD SCHOOL LODGE is the place"
Want to thank Albert and Ran for our wonderful week.
As a group of old friends and motorcycle enthusiasts, we select a destination each year for a week long bike trip. This year we stayed in Montrose at the Old Schoolhouse. We had a great trip and found the Schoolhouse to be a great base location. Every family had a large bedroom with a private bath and the greatroom was perfect for meals and private conversations. The favorite gathering spot was the large front porch which hosted numerous sessions each morning and evening. Thanks for making this a memorable trip !
Our stay at the Old School Lodge was much more that we expected. The new and fully furnished kitchen was a real blessing. The bedrooms with individual bathrooms were wonderful for the privacy and added to the ability to make the whole family happy. Eight year children to eighty year old grandparents all had plenty of room and privacy to make our stay wonderful in every way.
I spent several wonderful months in the school house while my house was being rebuilt. The high ceilings, big windows, fireplace and pristine wooden floors make it a very special space. It is very well furnished and maintained, and the owners are delightful and easy to work with. I would very much recommend this place to anyone, it's both cozy for couples and accommodating of large groups, plus the kitchen is very well organized and equipped and can service a crowd easily. Loved my stay there!
