Welcome to Sweet Rock Ranch! Just a two hour escape from LA, arriving at this secluded location at the end of a dirt road feels like you are a world away. Another place in another time.
It is situated on five acres of surreal boulder landscape, overlooking the town of Joshua Tree and the national park, and located between the park entrance and Pappy & Harriet's.
The main house has two bedrooms (king + queen), two bathrooms, a den, living room, kitchen, and formal dining room with great views. For groups of more than four, there are two private sleeping cabins for an additional cost (see notes). One is the original homestead house. It is the oldest building in the area, remodeled as a sleeping cabin with a queen bed. The cozy bunkhouse cabin has a double bed.
Outside, enjoy the back porch, the 'lookout lounge' which overlooks the town of Joshua Tree and the national park, a hot tub, a cowboy tub, a yoga deck, a horseshoe pit, a barbecue area (gas & charcoal), great hangout spots, and more boulder piles than you can explore in a weekend.
Just off the back porch is over 250 acres of pristine desert for you to explore. Nothing but boulders, joshua trees, wildlife . . . And silence!
A scenic walking bridge takes you to a new six person saltwater hot tub surrounded by boulders - a stargazer's dream!
We are uniquely situated between the national park entrance in Joshua Tree and Pappy & Harriet's in Pioneertown - the best daytime and nighttime activities the high desert has to offer.
Or. . . You may decide you don't want to leave Sweet Rock at all!

As longtime desert enthusiasts, we have stayed at many rentals in the area and noted the many things that we appreciate in a good rental experience. After an extensive search, we found this uniquely wonderful property and spent two years customizing every detail in order to create what is now one of the best rental properties in the entire high desert.
We have travelled around the world, but it's the high desert that keeps calling us back. We mostly split our time between here and LA, where we both work in the arts.
John Henson purchased this house in 2012
The house was recently remodeled comfortably rustic, with a nice representation of work from local artists. Loaded with amenities and guest features, including a fully equipped new kitchen, wi-fi, a desert library, vinyl collection & player, games & dvds - and the most sublime hot tub experience in the high desert!
Every window on the property has a view to other-worldly ancient rock formations.
There are both gas and charcoal BBQs, for your grilling preference.
The main house has central AC & heat, plus an evaporative (swamp) cooler.
Every detail has been thought through for the most amazing and peaceful stay at this resort like property.
We could have easily spent our time in the area just exporing the grounds and reveling in the ammenities, hot tub, cowboy tub, fire table and views. Flocks of quail greeted us in the morning. The fireplace cozy, the kitchen set up perfectly . The vibe is rustic chic, but the practical things, showers, kitchen etc are modern.
Our traveling companions want to book for a family reunion, knowing that their grandchildren will be entertainaed by exploring the property and discvoering the wonders tucked away in the beautifully orchestrated grounds. Just a short drive to the wonders Joshua Tree National Park, Noah Outside Museum and Morango Reserve. Lots of fun and funky retuants nearby and a quick trip down the hill to a big Vons
and restuants. We canta wait to return in other seasons to see what wonders unfold, and to once again awake to the glorious morning sunrise outsie the picture windows.
First the essentials: the bed is really comfortable, the hot water is quick/plentiful, the hot tub is AMAZING, and the kitchen has everything you’ll need to make great meals. But this place is like no other so I want to say a little more. You check in at 4pm and because it was late November the low autumn sun was bouncing off the faraway clouds creating an exploding masterpiece of color in the skies. We looked at each other and said, “This is paradise.” We unlocked the door and entered the house to find it warm and clean and welcoming, but we just couldn’t stop staring at the jaw-dropping desert views from every window. There was a bottle of wine left for us, complements of the hosts, and we did what any polite guests would do- we opened it, poured ourselves two glasses and went to relax on the deck overlooking the desert. By this time the sun was setting and colors in the sky had turned from masterpiece to mind-blowing. We sipped our wine as some coyotes cried and sang in the distance. This was a ‘wow’ moment, but to be honest the ‘wow’ began with our first contact with Deva and John (the property owners.) They were so kind, and professional and actually concerned with our satisfaction and happiness – it’s as if they’ve been in the hospitality business their whole lives. They are the kind of people you wish every vacation rental property owners would be, and nothing makes this more evident than reading the welcome book they’ve prepared for their guests. They’ve thought of every question you could ask and have anticipated every need you could have- and they’re totally available should something come up! It’s definitely not like this at other places! I don’t usually write reviews, but this experience stood out to me and it’s something we’ll never forget, in fact we’re already planning our next desert adventure and we can’t wait to come back to Sweet Rock Ranch!
The setting here is truly amazing, set amongst the boulders with views of the valley below. Even though you are near town, it feels very private and remote. The main house is set up perfectly for four, the bedrooms separated and each with a private bath. There are lots of outdoor seating areas to enjoy throughout the day, and the hot tub is wonderful!
The kitchen has everything, and we cooked two dinners there during our stay. The house and grounds are wonderfully decorated, and our visit was a complete joy. Highly recommended!
Really enjoyed our stay. View was amazing, and the house was so well put together and decorated... Felt like it fit right into the landscape but very up to date which I like. We cooked every night and sat outside on the elevated sitting area and looked at the stars
This is a tremendous spot for a getaway. The main house is in perfect order, plus there are two small cabins where couples can sleep comfortably. The details are the best: a great library with desert-themed novels and nonfiction, perfect for whiling away an afternoon; spotless kitchen and bathrooms; incredible view; total privacy; awesome hot tub; exquisite local art and furniture. An oasis.
We arrived at night, aware only of the star-filled sky and an inviting hot tub nestled amidst dramatic boulders mere steps from the the main house. The main house is PERFECT for two couples, with comfy beds, great bathrooms and kitchen, and plenty of gathering spots inside and out. When the sun rose the next morning, we were greeted to a spectacular view of Yucca Valley and miles of boulder-strewn desert to explore. The place can easily handle four couples if you rent the two adjacent (and very charming) cabins. Can't wait to come back with more people.
