Overview

About the property

Sleeps 8. 3 Bedrooms. 2 Baths.

The house known as the 'Captain's Quarters' sits at the forest's edge, set back from the road and tucked into a very private estate. A four year build, (completed in 2008), it is filled with modern luxuries such as a gourmet kitchen, beautiful bluestone gas fireplace, radiant heated floors, a spa bath, air conditioning and wifi internet. Though the amenities are modern, the 'feel' of the home is steeped in an old world charm and beauty. Built with a love for the art, nothing was overlooked. From the heavy Douglas fir timbers, to the ornate cast iron radiators, much was borrowed from days gone by and re purposed here. Details in brass, marble, red wood, granite, copper, maple, limestone, and stained glass are to be found throughout.

This home was designed with friends and family in mind, and so is very social and entertains beautifully. It is truly a pleasure to experience!

The house is surrounded by gorgeous natural landscapes. White pines tower above mossy cliffs and rocky outcroppings. Wild life big and small weave through the trees. Sweeping cedars huddle and lean into each other. Colorful maples surround it all, both glowing over, and shading the acreage. There's even a pretty forest pond for the frogs and ducks, and ice skating come winter, that sits below a cozy 'lighthouse' on the bluff.

Property adjoins hundreds of acres of a diverse designated 'green spaces' that are woven with miles of walking and cross country ski trails.

This house is located in the perfect part of Duluth. While being only minutes away from Lake Superior and Downtown one way, and the malls and airport the other, there is still an absolutely enchanting feel to it all.

A beautiful home in a charming setting.

  • 5 of 5

This was the perfect spot for the annual get together of 3 siblings and our spouses. Doug introduced us to his home and we felt very at home the whole time we were there. The accommodations were perfect for our tradition of cooking, eating, and just being together. We'd never been to Duluth and just loved the city and area and the bird feeders outside all of the windows provided a lively show all day long.

My four friends and myself went to spend the weekend in Duluth. The house was beautiful and perfect for our party of five. Doug was great and his home has all the amenities for a successful fun weekend!

Captain's Quarters Review

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful home in a beautiful setting close to the College of Saint Scholastica where my family and I stayed for a college graduation. it is about a 10-15 minute drive from the Canal Park area. Doug the owner was always available and stopped in to provide assistance. Amenities included a full kitchen, 3 BR's with comfortable beds and a comfortable pull out, 2 baths, Jacuzzi tub, inside gas fireplace, Grill, deck, fire pit with wood provided and a map for a nature hike.

I would highly recommend this property to any family or group who is willing to" take good care" when they are visiting because it is a meticulous home. Be prepared to pay for a cleaning fee and to buy insurance. My only confusion was that it said that it slept 8, but we got charged a slightly extra amount for our 7th person.

Dream home.

  • 5 of 5

Doug, thank you for sharing your home with us. You are not a carpenter but an artist and this house is a masterpiece. Everywhere I looked was something more awesome than the last. From the Doug Fir beams to the stained glass transom window to the beautiful second floor bathroom. I could live there and not change one solitary thing. If we hadn't had a graduation that weekend we would not have left the property. So renters, if you're looking for a place with peace and quiet, close to nature but in town and want to stay in what I consider a work of craftsman/prairie style art with all the amenities, this is the place. Thanks again Doug, you are a very gracious host and when we come next time you need to stop in for a visit.

This is a very nice property made with great attention to detail. We enjoyed it thoroughly as a family of four. Wish we could have stayed longer!
