The Luxurious 'Captain's Quarters' Is A Gorgeous Retreat, In Any Season

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,800 sq. ft.
Property type chateau / country house
Minimum Stay 3 - 4 nights

About the property

Sleeps 8. 3 Bedrooms. 2 Baths.

The house known as the 'Captain's Quarters' sits at the forest's edge, set back from the road and tucked into a very private estate. A four year build, (completed in 2008), it is filled with modern luxuries such as a gourmet kitchen, beautiful bluestone gas fireplace, radiant heated floors, a spa bath, air conditioning and wifi internet. Though the amenities are modern, the 'feel' of the home is steeped in an old world charm and beauty. Built with a love for the art, nothing was overlooked. From the heavy Douglas fir timbers, to the ornate cast iron radiators, much was borrowed from days gone by and re purposed here. Details in brass, marble, red wood, granite, copper, maple, limestone, and stained glass are to be found throughout.

This home was designed with friends and family in mind, and so is very social and entertains beautifully. It is truly a pleasure to experience!

The house is surrounded by gorgeous natural landscapes. White pines tower above mossy cliffs and rocky outcroppings. Wild life big and small weave through the trees. Sweeping cedars huddle and lean into each other. Colorful maples surround it all, both glowing over, and shading the acreage. There's even a pretty forest pond for the frogs and ducks, and ice skating come winter, that sits below a cozy 'lighthouse' on the bluff.

Property adjoins hundreds of acres of a diverse designated 'green spaces' that are woven with miles of walking and cross country ski trails.

This house is located in the perfect part of Duluth. While being only minutes away from Lake Superior and Downtown one way, and the malls and airport the other, there is still an absolutely enchanting feel to it all.

Amazing Property!

  • 5 of 5

We are four couples who gathered for an annual outing of food, conversation, games, and friendship. Since food is a primary part of the group's raison d'etre, the kitchen needed to serve our cooking needs, which it did with its incredible Viking double oven and 8-burner top along with all the other cooking essentials. The house itself is an architectural splendor. The attention to detail is evident everywhere you turn. The setting was equally beautiful, tucked back into the woods and featuring a well-marked 2-mile trail for getting some fresh air and exercise (the early November snowfalls enhanced the beauty of the trek). Sleeping accommodations were comfortable and the bathrooms, especially upstairs with its whirlpool tub, were all that we needed. The living room with its fireplace was a perfect gathering space for charades, Taboo, nouns, and other group games, not to mention an ideal spot for the first cup of coffee for starting the day. Doug was a great host, offering suggestions and assistance whenever needed. All-in-all, we certainly couldn't have had a more enjoyable weekend getaway!

Loved this property!! The home is beautifully constructed and well furnished with anything you could could possibly need. The gorgeous forest setting provided a very relaxing atmosphere! Was the perfect place for a family gathering. Was only there for 2 days and wished we could have stayed longer! Thank you Doug for sharing your beautiful home with us!

Such a beautiful and comfortable place to get together for the three Acheson sisters and our spouses to celebrate our annual "Christmas in September" event. The homeowner is very gracious. The grounds are beautiful. We enjoyed our stay both inside and outside. So thankful this amazing home was available for us.
