Overview

About the property

Sleeps 8. 3 Bedrooms. 2 Baths.

The house known as the 'Captain's Quarters' sits at the forest's edge, set back from the road and tucked into a very private estate. A four year build, (completed in 2008), it is filled with modern luxuries such as a gourmet kitchen, beautiful bluestone gas fireplace, radiant heated floors, a spa bath, air conditioning and wifi internet. Though the amenities are modern, the 'feel' of the home is steeped in an old world charm and beauty. Built with a love for the art, nothing was overlooked. From the heavy Douglas fir timbers, to the ornate cast iron radiators, much was borrowed from days gone by and re purposed here. Details in brass, marble, red wood, granite, copper, maple, limestone, and stained glass are to be found throughout.

This home was designed with friends and family in mind, and so is very social and entertains beautifully. It is truly a pleasure to experience!

The house is surrounded by gorgeous natural landscapes. White pines tower above mossy cliffs and rocky outcroppings. Wild life big and small weave through the trees. Sweeping cedars huddle and lean into each other. Colorful maples surround it all, both glowing over, and shading the acreage. There's even a pretty forest pond for the frogs and ducks, and ice skating come winter, that sits below a cozy 'lighthouse' on the bluff.

Property adjoins hundreds of acres of a diverse designated 'green spaces' that are woven with miles of walking and cross country ski trails.

This house is located in the perfect part of Duluth. While being only minutes away from Lake Superior and Downtown one way, and the malls and airport the other, there is still an absolutely enchanting feel to it all.

An amazing getaway!

This home has simply the most warm and homey feel right when you enter the door. You can see and touch the hand crafted wood detail all around the home, inside and out. We have enjoyed the high quality woodwork from the floors to windows, to ceiling. The gourmet kitchen was fully stocked and includes large gas stove with one large convection oven and one small oven. The home has an open concept kitchen, dining, and grand living space with a two story fireplace. Marble and tile were seen in bathrooms, center island, and breakfast room. We were able to make use of the breakfast cove each morning while sipping coffee and watching the morning wildlife trough the rounded bay windows. Bird feeders hung in strategic places outdoors so that you can see the birds from almost every window. Bedrooms were of good size and very comfortable. There are outdoor decks around the house, as well as a large gathering deck with a grille. The grounds are spectacular with clearly marked pathways through the woods. A small stream, garden house, and wild blueberries, flowers, and mushrooms are found along the path, as well as large rock outcroppings where you can sit for a bit and enjoy mother nature. The home owner/manager is very friendly, courteous and willing to help with anything we needed. Our group of ladies are planning to return! Thank you for sharing this beautiful property!

Wonderful Vacation

  • 5 of 5

The house is perfection. Well furnished, beautifully designed, luxurious but still very comfortable. Doug (the owner and designer/builder) is truly an artist. He came by when we arrived and gave us a tour/run-down on how things worked and was nearby if anything were to go awry (it didn't). The house is on a beautiful, well landscaped yard with a very cool walking path around the property. Close to the heart of Duluth, but nestled away from everything just far enough to feel relaxing.

We crammed 8 adults, a toddler, and a dog into the house. We are a group of really close friends - would not recommend folks who aren't very comfortable around each other to also do this. As it was, we had 2 folks sleeping in a loft area with one on a blow-up mattress. Definitely better suited for 6 adults, but certainly not unmanageable / uncomfortable if you are a larger group and know what you're getting yourself into. We loved staying here. Thanks for everything, Doug!

Beautiful Home

  • 4 of 5

We loved staying at this home in Duluth. The setting is very peaceful, yet still close to all of the attractions and sights that Duluth has to offer. The owner met us at the door, and was very detailed about many elements of the house. Being that we are adults, we could have managed to figure out the basic features of the house without the introduction. The owner also has a guest house where he stays on the property very close to the rental property while visitors are staying in the main house. I included these details because I think it is important for people who are expecting a certain level of privacy while on a vacation and paying for a rental of an entire home. This being said, Douglas is very nice and friendly and did not stop by after his initial visit to introduce us to the home.

This is a luxury home that does not disappoint!

My family loved this place! I can't say enough good things about it. Our host was wonderful. I enjoyed talking with him while we were there, he makes you feel welcome on the property. We have already made referrals to family and friends to stay here and our kids want to go back as well.

Perfect location for a ladies reunion!

  • 5 of 5

House is beautiful, finish work unbelievable, location (in the woods) fantastic, wildlife abounds (right out your window). Doug perfect host. There to get you oriented when you check in, and there the next morning to make sure everything was working. Nice touch--night lights everywhere (we often carry our own)! It was a wonderful stay--kitchen appliances first class, disappointed we didn't get to cook out on the Weber grill--too little time! Definitely recommend this location for anyone visiting Duluth.
