I'll Be Back!
This is my second stay at this garden Bungalow, and most definitely will not be my last. Before I talk about how wonderful and beautiful the home is, I must start with saying that dealing with the home owner of this home is such a delight! Deb makes you feel like you have known each other forever. She is prompt in her replies to inquiries, and is ever ready to help in however she can. She is the best!
Now about this charming, quaint, beautiful, precious home. The grounds where the home is are lush and offer great privacy, yet its not a "jungle" or overgrown. Everything is well kept and maintained.
The one bedroom unit is a perfect size for one or two people sharing a bed. The living room is comfortable and not crowded. Kitchen is perfect for one or two to cook in. The lanai is comfortable and pleasant and relaxing. I can not think of enough pleasant adjectives to use to describe the charm of this little home.
Beautiful private bungalow with nice location
This secluded bungalow at the end of a quiet neighborhood has a beautiful mini botanical garden with fruit trees in the yard. The home is well-equipped, new and modern, with everything you need. We fell asleep each night with the windows open to the sound of chirping tree frogs through the night. The location is nice because it’s sort of midway between Volcano National Park and Hilo, which we went back and forth between. But there are smaller villages and shopping to explore nearby as well. In fact, it’s about a 25 minute drive down to Kalapana, which is where the lava is currently flowing. Love this place and will stay again!!!
Exactly as advertised!
We were very sorry to leave the ‘jungalow’. We stayed for the whole month of January. The house is perfect and the grounds are amazing. It rained very heavily for a week at one point, the roads were flooding, but we always said that although that wasn’t very pleasant , we had no regrets about the house we picked. It’s only a short drive to the other side of the island where the sun is always shining and the beaches are good.
You get with the house exactly what you see in the pictures. Communication with the owners was excellent. Mahalo.
I was pretty worried after reading the intro information about all the bugs, but it was ultimately not a problem. We followed all the rules with regards to composting and was fine. There are a lot more rules here than with most houses, but for the most part they exist for good reason.
This is an ideal spot for someone looking to relax in a somewhat remote environment. There are a few things I'd point out about who may or who may not enjoy the stay.
* The frogs are loud. They make sounds that are more like bird chirps than loud "ribbot" sounds. It didn't bother me at all, but your results may vary.
* The location is nice, but remote. The walk down to the rocky beach with waves crashing was amazing, and one of my favorite parts of the trip. Getting into Hilo was a MASSIVE pain though. There was major construction on the road, and we're told there's always bad traffic and construction. If you plan on going to Hilo regularly, maybe get something a little closer.
* We really enjoyed places like Kaleo's in Pahoa. Do keep in mind it's a place where real people live rather than a resort town where the only people who can afford to live nearby are millionaires. Couldn't be more different from our stay in Wailea. You can walk into some restaurants and bars that feel very divey, and not in the fake-hipster-dive-vibe way.
Overall if your plan is to see nature, I think this is an excellent spot. If you're a foodie who likes to be pampered you may consider going elsewhere.
One quick note: the towels did smell a bit mildewy. The ones in the closet were worse. I don't know if this is the fault of a previous guest or what, but something that could maybe be addressed. Mildew can get out of control in a very humid place like this, so it's probably common. Maybe worth finding a way to eliminate the smell, like white towels and bleach?
I'm not trying to talk anyone out of it: just be aware of what you're doing. We enjoyed the stay, had no problems, and got to see some amazing things nearby. The hosts were great with communication and sending us things to do nearby, all of which were hits. The house was clean and well taken care of.
A little Paradise in Paradise
This is really a cute and quaint little "junglalow" as its nicknamed. First, the grounds are beautifully landscaped with a natural, tropical look and feel. This one bedroom house has a wonderful little lanai so you can sit and enjoy the nature around you. The home is nicely decorated with a tropical motif and tastfully done. The bedroom is comfortable and a nice size. The bathroom has a walk-in tiled shower and is not only very attractive but a comfortable sized bathroom.
Being that it is on the east side of the island, there is not a real need for air conditioning, but there are ample fans to circulate the air when needed.
The owner has made sure all the basic necessities are in place prior to your arrival.
I will definitely use this house as an overflow, as this was its purpose on this occasion, and highly recommend this home for anyone thinking of a quiet, tranquil stay. (note: yes, there are coqui frogs, but this is Hawai'i: they are everywhere. I consider them the crickets of the island with their chirping. Personally, I find their sound relaxing and peaceful - much like the sound of a cricket - some people love it/some can't stand it)
Peaceful, relaxing & convenient!
Great location and so relaxing. All amenities well thought out. Fairly warm and humid while we were there but moved fans around which kept us comfortable. Would stay there again.
