Yes, you have found us, we are still here in our lovely Waikoloa Villas condo! This is our 12th year of sharing our home with our guests. Please read some of our 20 more current Reviews, all of them are FIVE Star.

Our Beautiful Two Bedroom condo, HALE O MELE LA'I, our 'House of Happy Songs' in Waikoloa Villas on the Big Island has been beautifully furnished as a home, not just a vacation rental.

Our Non-Smoking, spacious 1260 sq ft unit, plus a very roomy lanai allows for very comfortable living with a view across the golf course to the Pacific Ocean. We are on the 2nd floor of the two-story complex, so you have an even better view from the lanai and don't have anyone above you.

Among our Beautiful Furnishings is a cushy Leather Double Recliner (recliner #1 and #2). In our travels we have found that some other couches with wicker frames and loose floral cushions are pretty, but also pretty uncomfortable to sit on, if you are spending any extended time in our home, (which we hope you will do). Our 3rd leather recliner in the living area is powered for relaxing ease. The 4th recliner is on the lanai, a good napping spot.

We enjoy decorating with local art of Hawaii, with more than 35 pieces hanging on the walls.

HALE O MELE LAI is indeed our 'House of Happy Songs'. in Hawaiian MELE LA'I means Happy Song and is the name of an old Hawaiian Hymn.

We love the Hawaiian Culture and since Music is such an important part of the Culture and of our own lives, we want to share that with our guests by providing a library of HAWAIIAN MUSIC. You may enjoy picking up the ukulele and making your own music. There is also an instruction book.

We enjoy the best of both worlds by being at about 900 foot elevation, with nights a little cooler and days warm and sunny, therefore the 6 ceiling fans are usually adequate for comfort.

It is just a short 10 minute drive to the South Kohala Gold Coast, where there are six beautiful sandy beaches to choose from, including the well known Hapuna Beach, (voted the best in the country) and 'Anaeho'omalu Bay ('A Bay').

Waikoloa Villas is situated along the 18 hole WAIKOLOA VILLAGE GOLF COURSE, designed by Robert Trent Jones, Jr., for which we include golf discount cards. For the avid golfer, there are six other golf courses near by.

WAIKOLOA VILLAGE has a small Shopping Center with a full line, top notch, affordable local grocery store with pharmacy, bakery, deli, and fresh fish and meat market. Also in the Village...a gas station, several small restaurants, a larger Italian restaurant, medical offices, dental office, beauty salon, bank ,and Post Office.

We are Centrally Located to the Beaches, Shops and Restaurants along the Kohala coast, the North Shore with Kamehameha's birthplace, the Paniolo (cowboy) town of Waimea, the old town of Hilo, the Volcano, and the shops and restaurants of Kona, and much, much more.

The Big Island has 11 different climate zones from the ocean to the top of Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, so much variety of temperatures and fauna and flora to see.

About The Owner

We moved from Kansas City years ago, where we were teachers, to our dream place of Estes Park, Colorado where we were in business for 25 years. Soon, we wanted a get-away from the winter cold and discovered Hawaii, our NEW dream place! After years of shopping real estate, we finally decided the Big Island was it, so we took the plunge.

The Owner purchased this condo in 2005

Why The Owner chose Kohala Coast

We chose Waikoloa Village because it has a small town local feeling, more quiet and laid back than the hustle and bustle of the beach complexes. We like the Waikoloa Villas complex because we found a feeling of home and comfort, of belonging to a place. We enjoy the somewhat more moderate temperatures and especially the clearer air than in Kona, helped by the trade winds.

The culture and spirit of old Hawaii are very important to us and we found that easier to access on the Big Island. We love the small Hawaiian churches where you can meet the people and hear the hymns sung in the beautiful Hawaiian language.

What makes this condo unique

We enjoy the ability to go from our condo out in any direction---to the Kohala Gold Coast with its beautiful, long, and accessible white sand beaches, the historical old towns up north, the old Hawaiian cultural sites, Mauna Kea, the Parker Ranch, the Volcano, Kona shops, Hilo, great restaurants in the Queen and King shops and more.

The Villas sits at the edge of the beautiful Waikoloa Village Golf Course, so you can walk over to the Pro Shop, get a cart and head out for 18 holes, very reasonably priced, by virtue of the discount cards we can provide.

Better than advertised. Best location on the Big Island!!

Look no furthe!!. Great place!! Great price! I am a suoerhost myself (with the competing vacation rental website) ....therefore know the difference. The place was very clean, neat and the hosts were professional and accommodating (all of which are a very rare on the Big Island) in every way. The location was fantastic. Walk to dinner and shops. On 9th hole of a fantastic golf course. Pool and hot tub were fantastic...super clean. Would recommend Highly. Best place I have stayed in Hawaii. Thank you Den and Sylivie. I will return.

We do enjoy helping our guests with their plans and try to make their stay comfortable and easy. That means being available to answer questions quickly both by email, text and phone. By doing so we have ended up getting to know and becoming friends with folks from all over the country, so a bonus for us! Our location does give our guests easy access to so much of the island and there is a lot to do within a short distance. We spent 4 months in our condo this past winter in vacation mode, but also doing more things to enhance the look, feel and livability of the space. Over the past couple years we have added a new full size washer and dryer, dishwasher, and shower doors. Last year we added a 60" flat screen TV and this year decided to mount it on the wall, giving a more spacious, roomy feel to the living area. Reviews such as yours validate what we have tried to accomplish in our special second home in the Islands....having a place to enjoy during our Colorado winters and also being able to share it with others. This is a large very nicely appointed condo, very quiet, with a nice view of the golf course. Waikiloa Villas is also convenient to some of the best beaches and sights on the island. Definitely reccomended!

We just finished an almost 4 months stay at Hale O Mele La’i, our House of Happy Songs, of which we are the owners. So we are responding with our own “review” of our second home. Of course you might expect us to say good things about our condo and all that the Big Island has to offer. We could honestly rave about it, however, reading our guests’s 5 star reviews on our site, in addition to those many reviews taken from the guest books will be more impartial. Delightful Condo

Our family visits the beautiful Big Island of Hawaii every summer, but we have never stayed in Waikoloa before. Sylvia was so friendly and helpful in convincing me that this was the right place for our vacation this time - and she was right! I took my 16-year-old niece and her friend for a last-minute adventure before school starts. Sylvia and Denis were so accommodating with our short timeline for making reservations, and things couldn't have gone more smoothly. The condo was exactly as described in the photos. The girls loved the huge TV and the comfy sofas! This location was perfect - amazing sunsets and cool breezes. We were never too hot, and that's saying a lot for August! The best beaches are 15 minutes away, and that paid off when trying to get there early enough to beat the crowds. The pool area was beautiful and never anyone else there. Although we've stayed at several other homes on the Big Island, the all-around advantages that this location offers can't be beat. We hope to stay here again in the near future.

Best vacation ever!!!

We (family of four, including two kids, 12 and 17 years old) enjoyed immensely our stay in Denis and Sylvia’s home! First of all, both Denis and Sylvia have an excellent email ethics: any questions you might have would be answered ASAP. What we have also appreciated greatly is Denis’ knowledge of the area and willingness to share it. In fact, his recommendations on local attractions, beaches and restaurants were absolutely spot-on and saved us a great deal of time and nerves.

The townhouse itself was absolutely perfect and felt like home the minute we entered. It’s located in a quiet area; very clean, with well-stocked and well-organized kitchen, plenty of towels and pleasantly surprising “free and clear” laundry supplies.

The absence of air conditioner was not an issue at all. Electric ceiling fans, installed everywhere including lanai, were sufficient to cool down the place. Much healthier than A/C, plus, with all the fresh air, best sleep we’d had since our pre-kids era! Another pleasant surprise – no bugs. I suspect the property management takes care of them (that or plentiful geckos we’ve seen on the lanai, have been doing an exceptional insect control job!).

Next time we visit Big Island - that’s where we will stay!

Here’s a couple of tips on what to do on Big Island:

1. First get an iPhone app "Gypsy Big Island tours"

2. Best beach is Hapuna beach. Famous Mahaiula / Makalawena Beachs are not worth the trouble (rocks in the water). Here's how to get there.Take the exit to Kekaha Kai state park and keep driving on unpaved road through the lava rocks to the Mahaiula beach parking lot/facilities. Park and walk right (north) until you see a trail through lava field. It'll take you to Makalawena beach.

3.National Volcano park: an active eruption of Kīlauea is happening now and can be seen from the observation deck of Jaggar museum (best view is after 7 pm).

4. Active lava flow: town of Kalapana. Take an evacuation road (3-9 pm). Bikes are available for rent, but the road is gravel and you will be spending more energy riding a bike than walking. The round-trip hike is 10 miles. There’s a ton of lava “creeks” close to the road. Don't step on silvery “highway” going through the lava field – active lava underneath.

5. Pololu valley is the absolute must and the hike down, although brutal, is well worth it.

6. Saddle road is now open to rental cars!

7. Great snorkeling tour with wild dolphins– “Ocean Encounters”.

8.Hawaian style café in Waimea

Wonderful Waikoloa

We had never visited Hawaii before, so decided to rent Den and Sylvie's very comfortable condo in Waikoloa, about 20 minutes north of Kona. We really did feel as though we were staying in a friend's home for 11 nights. The location allowed us to explore beaches on the dry (Kona) side of the island as well as travel easily to Waimea in the central part of the island, to the Kohala peninsula in the north, and to Hilo and a number of interesting sites on the island's wet side. All in all being based in this lovely home was a great way to introduce ourselves to the Big Island.

We were also struck by how wonderfully the condo introduced us to the culture of Hawaii through the art, music, furnishings, and guide books available for our use. It was easy to eat meals in when we chose to, as the kitchen was extremely well organized and stocked with everything from herbs and spices to high quality cookware. We really couldn't have asked for a nicer home away from home.

You did such a good job preparing yourselves to really see the Big Island in a big way once you got there. Hiking down to Waipio Valley and back up is pretty impressive, for one thing. We appreciate it when our guests like to get in touch with the culture of Hawaii, which is a big deal to us. We try to provide the atmosphere in Hale O Mele La'i that inspires that kind of an experience. We do try to give our guests most of what they would need at home, so that when they arrive, it is all there waiting for them. We do keep upgrading the condo each time we are there.
