About the Property
Handcrafted, sustainable art home in spectacular setting. 2000 sq. ft.
Spectacular views of a secluded canyon near Colorado National Monument. Solar powered earthship, designed by Michael Reynolds, this off-grid paradise is situated on 35 wooded acres on the edge of a truly stunning canyon. Open layout, large kitchen, great for family and friends to gather. Rustic decor, rough natural interior finishes. Great for mountain biking, x-country skiing, hiking. Day trip distance to Arches, Canyonlands, hot springs, and ski resorts. Our home is a work in progress with some rough finishes and some area where you can see the construction details.
Because it is powered by the sun and thermal mass, interior temperatures do not change rapidly.

About the owner: Didi may have grown up all over the world as a military child but Colorado has been her family's home since 1861. Rick grew up in Denver. They met in Gunnison, Colorado when Rick enrolled at Western State after his military service. Rick, a stained glass artist, carpenter, mechanic, and jack of all trades worked at a building center while building the house. Didi is a librarian who has written several books about books. They have two grown children and four grandchildren. They also nurtured 58 foster teenagers before moving up to their canyonedge retreat.
Why the Owner Chose Glade Park, CO, USA:
For years the Heralds dreamed of building on off-grid sustainable home, and in 1999 their dream came true when this rare canyon side acreage came up for sale. Building the earthship was a labor of love and has proven to be even more comfortable and beautiful than their wildest dreams as well as educational.
The Unique Benefits at this House:
The Leaping Lizard Earthship is built from recycled materials and uses renewable energy. Our annual utility bill is under $200.00 a year! The house is powered by photovoltaic generated electricity. It is heated and cooled with solar energy, strategic orientation, and natural convection. Domestic water is collected from rain, snow, and condensation. It goes through a three stage filtering system. It is luxurious off-grid living with ample electricity for lighting, computers, and entertainment as well as running a dishwasher and washing machine. For Didi, the rugged landscape and dramatic canyon make it the most beautiful place on the face of the earth.
