About John & Lorraine James
Our family's journey began with my parent's decision to purchase a lot and build a modest beach house in Duck in 1973. At my age of 14 years, the only things in town were a Wee Winks market, a Decoy carver on the corner, the Army Corps of Engineers Research facility and a fire house! The wild horses were abundant, but lived up in the Corolla area at the time. Pretty much unspoiled wilderness then. Years later, John and I had a family of our own and raised 2 daughters to love traditional summer vacations in the Duck house, thus continuing the family tradition! Fast forward to 2015 and the scene is very different in Duck, but it is virtually the same in Carova! That is why we chose it! The wilderness is still in place, complete with the wild ponies! Carova is truly a place where one can find peace and tranquility in one of America's last remaining unique natural settings. We hope that you and your family and friends enjoy the magic of Carova as much as we do! We wish you and yours peace and happiness, Lorraine James

Why John & Lorraine James chose Corolla
The first time we came to Carova we couldn't believe what a fabulous experience to be able to stay in this unique place! Where else in America can you actualy stay in the middle of a wild horse sanctuary in a beach community?! What an adventure, to start your vacation by driving up the beach along the Atlantic Ocean or take a small boat across Knotts Island Bay through the canal system right to your back door!
What makes this House unique
Avoid all the traffic and come by boat and cut several hours off your drive by launching at the boat ramp on Knotts Island and cruising straight across the bay into the canal system and pull right up to the dock at the house. You will need a shallow draft boat similar to a Jon boat, Polar Craft, Carolina or Mako Skiff. For delicious catered meals, Carova local and professional chef, Mary Thrasher will provide lovely feasts for your group. Also, for fresh fish boils, charter fishing, photography tours and sunset cruises, contact Sean Boder, another local at (252) 722-3622! The carova Beach firehouse is located right across the canal. With limited hours, they offer ice, ice cream, souvenirs, T-shirts, sweatshirts, ball caps, simple games, candy bars and snacks. Occasionally they offer BBQ, hot dogs etc. for fundraisers and allow kids to check out the fire trucks, real nice folks! Recycling is mandatory in this environmentally conscious community :)

Loved this peaceful getaway!
It was so hard to leave this special peaceful place. Thoroughly enjoyed a long relaxing wknd in this beautiful home and beautiful setting. Watched sunrises and sunsets from the panaramic decks everyday, beach combed for hours (The shells and driftwood were amazing!), relaxed in the hot tub, and enjoyed all the wildlife around the house, including lots of birds, horses, and a few deer too! Owners very friendly and accommodating. Perfect place to “get away from it all”. Can’t wait to come back!
Thank you Carly for your kind words!
We are so pleased that you were able to relax and enjoy the magic of Carova Beach. Lucky you, to be there when shelling was great too!

Beautiful & serene!
We had a wonderful trip and truly enjoyed our visit. The house has an extremely well equipped kitchen & we enjoyed making meals together each day. The views of the canal were spectacular and the wild horses visited daily. Loved the pool & hot tub! While we did not use the canoe or kayaks- great options available! I would highly recommend this home! The James' were highly responsive and were fantastic hosts.
Peaceful, relaxing and exceeded expectations!
We cannot say enough good things about our stay at Hoof, Line and Sinker. This house really exceeded our expectations! The location is very secluded and was so nice to be within walking distance from the beach and the fire station for ice and souvenirs. The house is fully stocked with everything we needed from in the kitchen, beach supplies, outdoor activities, games, kayaks, etc. There is even a little kid’s play area set up underneath the house. The house was very clean, organized, and tastefully decorated. The beach was very secluded and there was plenty of room for the kids to run around and camp out for the day. One of our guests came by boat so the guys were able to go out fishing in the Knotts Island Bay. They caught a few largemouth bass and 2 catfish! It was also nice to be able to hop in the kayaks right there and explore around the canals. The wild horses visited every day and we also saw many great blue herons and egrets around the canal.
We all had a wonderful and memorable vacation!
Very nice vacation house
We stayed at this house 9/14-21/17 and very much enjoyed the trip even though a hurricane passed by off in the Atlantic. The weather was only rainy one day, but the surf was high most of the week. Very fortunately this house has a nice pool and hot tub so the rough ocean made little difference and was interesting to watch. The area is isolated, but not at all deserted. One does have to use a 4x4 with deflated tires and watch the tides. We particularly liked hiking into VA just a couple miles away. It is all state park with foot access along the beach or by driving to the gate at the end of Ocean Pearl Road. We spent the week quietly in the area with only one drive into Corolla. House is very nicely equipped. Thanks, Chuck & Sue.
Dear Chuck & Sue,
We are really glad you both enjoyed yourselves. Your perspective on the hurricane was great, appreciating and respecting it from the comfort of the house!
Thank you for mentioning the hiking trails at False Cape State Park too, another unique thing to do in Carova.
Take care and we hope to hear from you two again!

Well stocked house, but a few items to consider:
Overall we had some lovely times with our family at the beach house, but even though I thoroughly read other reviews, there are some things I wish we had known in advance:
1. The house has amenities which we appreciated: well stocked kitchen (appliances, dishes, some kid dishes,), kayaks, canoes, sand toys, beach chairs etc....
2. The wild horses are charming and are frequently near the house, also we enjoyed watching the blue heron and egrets standing in the canal
3. The hosts are definitely responsive and we very much appreciated their prompt help and answers to all questions.
3. It may have been my error, but I thought this house was oceanfront and was a little disappointed that you cannot see the ocean from the house. Only the tiniest sliver of ocean is visible at the horizon beyond the canal and firehouse if you are sitting on the tallest chair on the deck. Just FYI.
4. The house needs some additional extermination. I think it's reasonable to expect bugs outside at the Outer Banks, but the ceiling in the living room was littered with spiders, bug bodies in all the corners and crevices, and every morning when I woke up to go to the kitchen I would walk through several strings of cobwebs. (another thing to consider is that I saw mold on bathroom ceilings and ended up with terrible sinuses which got worse each night of our stay and cleared up within 12 hours of leaving the house, if you have allergies). Also beware of other outer bank hazards, we found a snake curled up under the pool umbrella. I don't know if it was because of a front coming through but one morning we couldn't even go to the deck because it was literally infested with bugs. They left after the storm, but we lost power, and when you lose power you also lose water.
5. driving down the beach is a pain. we did ok but got stuck once. We took all the precautions of low tire pressure, low tide, and etc....but it will happen. kind of a pain, i wouldn't use the 4WD beach again. The tow company recommends 15-20 tire pressure fyi
6. I was SUPER disappointed that although the house is peaceful the beach is not secluded at all. The beach is packed with trucks and SUVS, for 9 miles and beyond, and it is a huge pain with small children because you can't even enjoy the beach for constantly making sure your children don't get run over. It's like letting the play in the middle of a highway (which, technically , it turns out, it is. Unpaved NC highway 12
This home was just built two years ago it is super clean and does not have mold anywhere. I had a home inspector come in this week after your comment, along with my builder. They all confirmed there is absolutely no mold in this home.
You made several comments that none of our previous 47 renters have ever mentioned or experienced, including the renter that stayed for the week just before you. That renter gave us a five star review and raved about our home and said they would return without hesitation.
Our beach house is not listed as ocean front and it clearly shows on the web site map exactly where it is located.
Your comments on spiders and bugs is highly exaggerated. We were at our home on Sunday afternoon the day you arrived and the cleaning staff had the home immaculate. There were a few cobwebs with spiders up in the cathedral ceiling that we had taken care of.
We are in a wild life habitat in a wild horse sanctuary, so yes there may be an occasional snake and other wildlife including bugs.

Highly responsive and helpful owners.
Great location. Great amenities. Well stocked for every need and activity. Would return without hesitation.
Thank you Bill. We're so glad you all had a great time. It was a pleasure getting to know you. We would love to have you all back!
