About the property

1BR Charming Cottage, 5-Minute Walk to Downtown

Why get a hotel room when you can enjoy one of Asheville's most charming neighborhoods? Just a five-minute walk from downtown, this beautifully renovated cottage is nestled next to a grove of trees and is handily close to a local café for that morning cup. The cozy bungalow in Asheville’s most charming and historic neighborhood is ideal for a romantic getaway, a writing retreat, or a family vacation.

Along with a queen-size bed in the master and a private loft upstairs with a full-size bed, Corner Cottage boasts granite countertops, a library with desk and easy chair, WiFi, walk-in closet, and a bathroom with bidet and open shower. The living room is bright and sunny, with a fireplace for chilly mountain nights. There is a Smart TV so that you can access Netflix or Amazon, as well as local channels. The fully enclosed backyard with a deck and grill affords a private and spacious outdoor environment for you and your pets to enjoy, and the rocker on the sunny front porch is the perfect place to catch up on your reading.

The cottage, located on a quiet street with a private driveway that has room for two cars, is decorated with Oriental carpets from the owner’s travels in the Middle East, Africa, and Central Asia as well original artwork. It was completely refurbished in 2014. The comfortable and light-filled living room includes a spacious sofa, an electronic fireplace, and the hidden Smart TV. The open-plan kitchen includes seating for up to eight, a breakfast bar, and a built-in wine rack. There is a microwave, gas range, and all you need to whip up a gourmet meal from the produce you buy at the many local farmers' markets.

If you like good coffee and fresh-baked pastries for breakfast, they are steps away at a small locally owned bistro. Take a city tour from the Asheville Visitor Center just down the street, or choose from dozens of restaurants, bars, theaters, and galleries a short walk away.

You can also venture to Biltmore House, the Grove Park Inn, or the Blue Ridge Parkway, all located within a 10-minute drive. Ziplines, hiking trails, canoeing, and white-water rafting are within easy reach. But you may find Corner Cottage hard to leave!

About Marta Martin

I'm a freelance writer who spends a lot of time on the road, and my friend Marta ensures that guests have a smooth and comfortable experience. It's great to be able to share all that Asheville has to offer!

Marta Martin purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Marta Martin chose Asheville

This house reputedly was an informal jazz club decades ago, but it was a vacation rental when I first came to Asheville several years ago. I fell in love with the cottage and the community, and bought the house from the previous owner who lived nearby. Then I set about moving walls, expanding the kitchen and bathroom, and making this place as comfortable and energy efficient a home as possible. The result also shows off some of the beautiful art and objects that I'm lucky to have. I'm delighted with this place, and I hope that you will be too.

What makes this cottage unique

I've learned that you don't need a big house to feel at home. The cottage is a perfect size, and cozy without being cramped. I love its privacy; the little forest on one side and the shady deck and yard on the other side make me feel like I live in the country when I'm actually in the heart of town.

Great Cottage in Walking Distance to town!!

  • 5 of 5

This cottage uses the space it has really nicely with all the necessary amenities. There is a loft upstairs that is perfect for brining kids and the home is more than enough for a family because of the location and amenities - full kitchen, washer/dryer/ outside space and parks everywhere. The backyard is perfect for having a pet and the owner has a grill and lovely table out there for use. Next door is a great spot for coffee, breakfast/lunch/dinner and it is in the Montford Historic District with two other great dining options within three blocks. This house is also in perfect walking distance to downtown, it is an easy stroll to get to the heart of Asheville. My husband and I brought our dog for some hiking, mountain biking and trail running - as well as - great Asheville food. The owner has a lovely library with wonderful books to browse. We were happy to have found such a great spot!

  • 5 of 5

We absolutely loved this cottage!! Perfect size for my husband and I. The location was excellent. Easy 5 minute walk to downtown. The cottage was clean and beautifully decorated. As a bonus Tod's Tasties was a great restaurant right next door and served breakfast, lunch and dinner and the food was excellent! I would highly recommend this wonderful cottage!!

Awesome Asheville Cottage

  • 5 of 5

This is one of the nicest properties we've rented from VRBO. Marta was very prompt in answering my email. The cottage is beautifully decorated, clean, and in a great location. I didn't have to buy extra toilet paper, paper towels, coffee filters, shampoo, etc.The bath towels were so fluffy and soft. The backyard was perfect for our dog. There's great restaurant next door (Tod's Tasties) if you don't feel like going far for food, but it's a quick walk into downtown too. Thanks again Marta for sharing your cottage with us.

Cute, convienent and cool!

  • 5 of 5

We LOVED staying here. From the minute I walked in I said, "I want to live here!". It was a fantastic location. Clean. Updated. Great layout. We were very comfortable just lounging around and were super happy with how everything we wanted to do was walkable. Restaurant next door (Tod's Tasties) was great and then the restaurant a few blocks away was great too (Nine Mile). I loved the sitting/library room and loved the book selection as well! Kitchen was just what we needed for a 4 night stay. We didnt cook anything but would have totally been happy with everything provided if we had cooked at home. We will book again for another stay! Thanks for a great rental experience!

Clean cottage, interesting art, hot attic

  • 3 of 5

Positives: Cottage was clean and well maintained. Loved being able to walk 10minutes to downtown. Enjoyed Italian restaurant on Montford Ave within walking distance. Negatives: The attic bedroom had no air conditioning and the bed is too small for 2 people to share. Owner had personal items left in shower. Shower gets bathroom floor very wet. Thank you for a nice place to stay.

Owner's Response: Glad you loved the location and appreciated the cleanliness! The items in the shower, such as shampoo and soap, are provided for the use of guests. We try to supply all the basics. And yes, during a heat wave the AC doesn't cool the loft well, which is why we have a brand-new Dyson fan to keep the air moving. The loft bed is, as noted in the description, a full size, rather than a queen. Thanks for the feedback!

Car: not necessary

Located in a quiet turn-of-the-century neighborhood, Corner Cottage is close to shops, cafes, restaurants, parks, theaters, and all that Asheville has to offer. Park your car and explore. Stroll down the street to take in a Shakespeare performance at an outdoor amphitheater in the summer, amble on a blustery fall day through the nearby leafy cemetery where literary greats Thomas Wolfe and O. Henry are buried, cozy up to the fireplace after a brisk winter walk, or take on the spring flood in a kayak along the French Broad river at the bottom of the hill. Let Corner Cottage be your comfortable base camp to enjoy all that is Asheville.
