About the property

1 bedroom, 2 bathrooms with view of mountains, and close to downtown Asheville

This is a newly renovated unique mountain home with beautiful private outdoor oasis! The folk architecture style designed and created by the owner is breathtaking. There are cozy, romantic areas throughout. The owner has gone to great lengths to create beauty and character in every room in the house. From the compass rose inlay to the copper trim---there are architectural surprises everywhere you look. The property includes a hot tub, fireplace with gas logs, covered porch, fire pit, gas grill, and beautiful deck with year round view of the mountains. The Escape has a full kitchen stocked with ample equipment needed to prepare gourmet meals, a separate dining room surrounded by glass, and a breakfast nook with a view of the mountains. The bedroom hosts an antique iron queen bed with luxury bedding, and large dressing room. The two full bathrooms are beautiful with granite vanities and walk-in showers. The living room has a full size couch, stress-less recliner, flat screen TV with cable package, sound system, and wireless internet. It is difficult to describe the many details and features in the amazing Escape!

The property is located just minutes away from downtown Asheville, the Blue Ridge Parkway, the Grove Park Inn, and the Biltmore Estate. Also, there are many nearby outdoor adventure activities: hiking, whitewater rafting, snow and water tubing, zip lining, kayaking, horseback riding, fly fishing, mountain biking, climbing, snow skiing, and waterfall tours.

Spend the day in downtown Asheville dining, tasting our local beers, shopping or people watching.

Great day trips to nearby small towns: Waynesville, Hendersonville, Brevard, Flat Rock, Chimney Rock, Highlands, and Cashiers. Scenic routes to each, with great lunch spots. Enjoy shopping for locally made crafts in the quaint atmosphere of small mountain towns.

For guests who bring their dogs there is a neighborhood green space for fetching just 1/2 mile from the house.

About Jeff Schmitz

The owner, Jeff Schmitz, is a builder and designer. Jeff is an amazing carpenter with a passion for unique, innovative design and an incredible eye for detail. He loves nature---both at the coast and in the mountains. Jeff has poured his heart and soul into making this space an oasis for couples to enjoy. Jeff often travels to the North Carolina coast where he is renovating two historic homes. He enjoys spending time in the mountains with his family while continuing to build in this community.

Jeff Schmitz purchased this house in 1992

Why Jeff Schmitz chose Smoky Mountains

Jeff was originally drawn to Asheville from the west coast by the relaxed lifestyle and ample access to beautiful mountains and rushing waters. He fell in love with this house and this part of Asheville 22 years ago. Since then, he has worked to renovate the space into a mountain dream house. It is both private and close to town---the best of both worlds. This is such a wonderful place and he wanted to share it with others as they traveled to the mountains of Western North Carolina. We all work so hard these days and forget how important it is to nurture ourselves and our relationships. This is an amazing, private romantic place that is appealing to adults of all ages.

What makes this house unique

This house had so much hidden potential when he purchased it many years ago. It was a diamond in the rough. The property has private lay out for being this convenient to town. It's character stood out above all others.

Perfect little cottage

  • 5 of 5

Great location...far enough from the "things of man", but close and convenient enough to whatever you might need. Downtown AVL is only 10-ish minutes away, and everything we wanted to do (biltmore park for shopping and massages, mount Mitchell, wolf ridge ski resort, Sierra Nevada, LaZoom tours, hikes, Grove Park Inn, etc etc) was within an hour or so drive. The cottage itself had great little touches throughout...nice yard for our dogs to romp around, plenty of space, nice decorative details, fireplace, beautiful spa-like shower in the second bathroom, city guides and "things to do" brochures, menus...the list goes on. We didn't use the hot tub only because it was just too cold and rainy out, but if we come back (WHEN we come back) in the warmer months, we will definitely use it. Jeff and Tammy were just a phone call away if we needed anything, but we didn't, so it was like our own private home in the hills. Great spot if you're traveling with your dog(s), they've really made it not only acceptable for you to bring dogs, but they encourage and welcome it.

We had a great week here exploring the great city of Asheville, and this cottage was the perfect place to come back to at the end of our busy days.

5 Year Wedding Anniversary Celebration

  • 5 of 5

I can't say enough nice things about this property. From the moment we walked in we were greeted with music and an impeccably clean house. The details and craftsmanship in the house were very well done. Everything had it's place and was so organized it was very welcome in a rental property. By far the best thing about this property was the location and the fenced in yard. We got to bring our husky and she absolutely loved the yard, we had a hard time getting her to come inside. It was such a relief to know she could explore every inch of the space, and be fully contained and safe. The hot tub and fireplace were such a joy to have on the colder weather days of our November stay. We were within minutes from downtown, and were able to explore the Blue Ridge Parkway, walking trails, great food, and more. Would highly recommend this property, and can't wait to come back and visit! Thank you for sharing your amazing home with us :)

Perfect Escape

  • 5 of 5

This place is the perfect mountain getaway - close to town, but still feels in the woods. Gorgeously decorated and incredibly comfortable, I didn't want to leave. The fenced in property was perfect for my dog - thank you for not just accepting, but also welcoming, large breeds at your home. We will definitely be back!

Awesome property!

  • 5 of 5

We loved every second of our stay in this home. The fact that it is dog friendly made it perfect. It is conveniently located close to the city and just far enough away to feel private and peaceful. Loved the outdoor space with the hot tub, fire pit and mountain view. Enjoyed visiting some of the local breweries and the arts district. We hope to return next Fall if not sooner. Thanks to Jeff and Tammy.

Awesome cottage

First time in Asheville. This home was minutes from downtown Asheville. Everything about this house was perfect. So clean and cozy. Back yard was beautiful. Our black lab loved it. We enjoyed the fire pit. Highly recommend this property . Felt like we were in our own little secluded world to relax!

From the moment we walked in hearing the music playing in the background, we knew we picked a good one! Everything was so nice and clean and the décor was perfect. The yard was such a peaceful place to sit and get some sun in the afternoon and then have a fire in the chimnea at night. The hot tub is in a great spot so you can sit back and relax watching the fire.

You are minutes away from the Blue Ridge Pkwy where you can take a ride to see the beautiful views and pull over and go for a hike. The city of Asheville is so nice and laid-back. Everyone we spoke to or passed on the sidewalk were so friendly. Suggesting places to go or somewhere to eat. We loved that the city is so dog-friendly. We took Sprocket with us everywhere we went and never had to leave her alone. She really loved exploring the yard and got to chase a few squirrels and chipmunks. When we would leave to go somewhere, we couldn't wait to get back to the house and just relax because it was just so nice...we never wanted to leave and can't wait to go back!!!

Jeff was so nice and made everything so easy to deal with. We go through VRBO at least 4 times a year and this was by far our favorite. Jeff and Tammy are so sweet to have everything you really need on-hand. That really meant a lot and you can tell how much they really care that you have a great trip! We can't thank them enough!!! You will not be disappointed in booking this place!!!!!

Thanks again for everything!!! :-)

This cottage is the best of both worlds-close to town and private! Only 4 miles from downtown Asheville, the Escape is located in a wooded setting. Hiking trails are abundant only minutes away on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Our favorite restaurants are the Admiral and Curate', you must make reservations early though. Other great places to dine in downtown Asheville include Limones, Salsa, Zombra, Tupelo Honey and Mela.
