MeltAway Cottage: Water Front with Spectacular Views - Rest, Relax and Enjoy!

Bedrooms 3
Space 1,400 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 5 - 6 nights

About the property

Spacious 3 Bedroom, 2 Bathroom House - great for long term stays

Your worries will disappear as you drive into the yard and catch your first glimpse of the turquoise waters directly in front of MeltAway Cottage (a non-smoking property). We are located just 8 minutes by car east of George Town in Masters Harbour, Bahama Sound 11 West.

The house is situated directly on the water’s edge across from an expansive sandbar (bonefish flats). Our two-story house has a spacious open floor plan that includes a 200 sq.ft. screened porch as well as a partially shaded patio area. From either vantage point you can greet the day peacefully with your morning coffee/tea and kick back and relax at day’s end while enjoying a beverage, grilling a steak and marveling at the spectacular sunsets as you recount the day’s adventures.

MeltAway Cottage is a fully furnished 3 bedroom, 2-bath home with an additional loft space that can be used for sleeping or storage. We just installed new hurricane proof/low-e windows throughout the house (April 2018). There is no air-conditioning in the loft space but there is a wall fan. The linens/pillows are new and or are constantly replaced. Bedrooms have newly installed ceiling fans as well as air conditioning. The twin beds upstairs have new “Leesa” mattresses (April 2018). Closets have plenty of hangers and storage space for your personal effects. We just put a new air conditioning system in the main living area (kitchen/living room). This system also helps to cool down the open loft area. The kitchen has stainless appliances (large French door fridge/freezer, microwave, stove/oven) with a complete set of cookware and small appliances (coffee maker, kettle, waffle maker, toaster, blender, mini-chopper). The dining area can seat up to twelve people (8 comfortably at the table when extended and 4 on bar stools at the islands). There is also a Weber BBQ in the screened porch with utensils for your grilling needs. We also just installed new ceiling fans in the screened porch for those days when we don't get a breeze.

We have recently connected to city water and have a fresh water cistern available as back-up.

The partially shaded patio in front of the house has lounge chairs and a hammock. There are three kayaks available for your use (1 single and 1 tandem Hobie kayak and an Ocean kayak that is specifically suited for young adults. Life jackets for adults are also available – 1 XL and 2 ML. We also added a new inflatable stand-up paddle board (SUP) for your enjoyment.

We have telephone (up and down), internet and cable (CBS4, FOX, NBC, ABC plus 2 Bahamian Stations). The internet is not as high-speed as you are used to at home but it is just fine for checking emails and Skyping family and friends. We also have Apple TV and a hard drive with a wide selection of movies for all ages that you are welcome to use. There is an IPOD dock available so please bring your music from home. We tend to listen to internet radio through the TV. We also have several games for the family (Yahtzee, monopoly and scrabble). Guests have started leaving books so we also have a small library.

You will find everything you need for your stay in and around George Town - grocery stores, a fantastic butcher shop (Prime Island Meats), restaurants/bars, liquor stores, bank machines (Scotia Bank/Royal Bank), gas station and you can purchase local souvenirs at the straw market and other small stores in town.

Exuma offers an abundance of sun, sand and sea as well as incredibly friendly people. Stretch out on a lounge chair and catch some rays or take a dip in the ocean in front of the house to start your day. Depending on the tide you can walk or kayak to the sandbar across from the house. There is also decent snorkeling along the shoreline so bring your gear. After our visit from Hurricane Matthew there's no telling what treasures you will find in the channel!

There are many spectacular beaches on both Great and Little Exuma that are accessible by car (a rental car is a must on the island). We have beach chairs, parasail beach blankets with tent pegs and beach towels that you can pack in the car as well as a few beach toys for your stay.

Being on or close to the water is what probably drew you to Exuma. Hop in the kayaks and paddle the shoreline or venture across to the nearby islands at high tide. The sand flats to the west are excellent for bone fishing. You can also arrange to have a guide with a boat pick you up right at the house. Renting a boat in George Town (Minns) also allows access to all the beaches of Elizabeth Harbor and Stocking Island. Sightseeing, adventure tours (swim with the pigs, visit the iguanas, snorkel in underwater caves at Thunderball Grotto) and SCUBA diving trips can be also arranged in town.

If you enjoy daily walks/running you can lace up your sneakers and safely walk/run the many roads in the neighbourhood or with the proper footwear explore the rocky shoreline. Folks are friendly so introduce yourself along the way.

If golf is your passion call and book a tee time and head north approximately 16 miles to Sandals Emerald Bay Resort and The Emerald Reef Golf Course (designed by Greg Norman).

A detailed PDF document will be provided to you that will give you tips on what to bring, detailed directions to various beaches and contact phone numbers to assist you in booking excursions. We will also be happy to answer your questions if you want to email or call us

About Sandy Teiman

After living and working in the Canadian Arctic (Iqaluit, Nunavut) for over 34 years we decided that our retirement would lead us to a vacation property in the Bahamas. We moved from Nunavut and have retired to a lakefront home outside of Northbrook, Ontario. We love living by the water no matter where we are.

Sandy Teiman purchased this house in 2015

Why Sandy Teiman chose George Town

After viewing several properties on both sides of the island we decided that the south side of the island suited our life style. We love to be on the water with our kayaks so a property with a boat well was what we chose. We are located close to several of the most amazing, almost deserted beaches one will ever find so we have the best of both worlds. The area is safe and a fabulous setting for couples, family vacations and obviously it's a retiree’s paradise.

What makes this house unique

MeltAway cottage offers tranquility, tropical breezes, beautiful vistas from a large screened porch, spectacular sunsets, star gazing with no light pollution, rustling palm trees and water lapping in the boat well with the tides right beside the house. Swimming is safe and you can literally walk to the sandbar (bonefish flats) off the porch steps at low tide. We just put in a small sand filled lagoon to make water access even easier for young children.

This was our second time in Exuma & it surpassed our expectations staying at the MeltAway cottage! The hosts are very friendly & responsive! The owners emailed us a PDF of the home with everything to expect with the home, close by grocery stores, beaches, etc and I found that extremely helpful as other vacation rentals in the past did not give us a booklet on the home... this definitely made MeltAway stand out on its own before we even arrived. Then when we arrived it literally looked like a post card! My whole family was blown away by the views from the home. You can swim right in the backyard and at low tide you can walk about .8 miles out to the vacant Kay with your own private beach!! The home is equipped with a paddle board and a few kayaks. The screened in patio ended up being our favorite part because it allowed us to sit outside and take in the view without getting attacked by bugs (we didn’t have any issues with noseeums like others in previous reviews). We spent 90% of our time in the screened in patio. It was pure bliss. The water is crystal clear right off the backyard of the home. We spent two whole days just hanging out in the water behind the house. The house is very spacious and the AC is very cold!! I highly recommend MeltAway cottage! It surpassed our expectations and we would definitely stay here again in the future!

Owner's Response: We are thrilled that you had a wonderful vacation at MeltAway Cottage. It was nice to hear that you used the guest book that we provide. We try to keep it updated with relevant information for visitors. When we are not out on the water we spend a great deal of time in the screened porch as well. We are discussing whether we expand it so we can put the hammock under screen Thank you for taking the time to write a review for us. We hope to hear from you in the future. All the best! Our stay at Meltaway exceeded our expectations! It’s located in a great central location for exploring the island. It had everything we could need and more to enjoy our stay. Lawrence met us at the airport, loaded all of our bags, showed us not only to the house, but stopped with us at a couple of stores on the way so that we could get supplies before we arrived to the beach house. We called him a couple of times during our stay. He hooked us up with an excursion and answered our questions. It was wonderful to have him available. The gardener, Samson, was also super nice and checked to make sure doing his work wouldn’t be an inconvenience to us. The house includes an awesome aqua glide, paddle board, two nice kayaks, beach chairs and toys to use. Sandy and David were quick to respond to any questions. We enjoyed the grill and screened in porch. We saw a sea turtle, baby lemon shark, puffer fish and my daughter saw an eel under one of the rocks behind the house. The roads are a challenge leading up to the house, but that’s all part of the adventure. Just take your time and if you can rent a Jeep that would be ideal. We drove a car and did fine, just went really slow. The kitchen is fully stocked and the beds were comfortable. Everything was clean and the house has great air conditioning. We had a blast in Exuma and Meltaway Cottage was the perfect choice for us!

Perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

This is our 2nd stay at melt away cottage and we love it because of the location. You can kayak out to the Cay in front of the cottage & that was an amazing experience & the most beautiful colors of blue with a sandy beach on the opposite side! Snorkel just outside the cottage up-and-down the rocky ridge. We saw starfish, a small sand shark, lobster and many colorful fish. This is a private location with the ocean all to yourself for exploring. We love going into town and getting groceries and cooking our own meals at the cottage. The kitchen is fully stocked and with the washer and dryer we learned to bring limited clothing and just washed them mid week. If you are lucky enough, on a clear night you can see the milky way from the patio. The stars at night are amazing. We love the calm clear waters and the sand bar that appears at low tide. I highly recommend if you rent a vehicle to get a Jeep as the side roads are pretty treacherous and the potholes on the main road are pretty crazy. Also the noseeum bugs for some reason seem to love me but this visit I made sure to bring a light long sleeve shirt and pants so I could still sit out at night on the patio! Deet spray asap too! We highly recommend this cottage and it has turned into one of the most amazing vacation spots we have ever been to. Sandy is wonderful to work with and answers any question you have very quickly!! We LOVE EXUMA!!!

A perfect place to relax!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from a 5 night stay and it was absolutely perfect. The house is so cozy and welcoming. It’s completely stocked with all the cooking essentials you’ll need. It’s the perfect place to relax and escape. It’s very secluded and was a little intimidating at first to navigate the roads around Exuma and to the house but we quickly figured it out. Lawrence was extremely helpful when we arrived as well as all the locals that we met during our time.

We would definitely recommend staying here and taking the all day tour with 4 Cs to see the pigs, iguanas and nurse sharks.

Bring snorkel gear, you won’t be disappointed.

wonderful house in a perfect location

  • 5 of 5

we chose this house for its location on the flats as my husband loves to fly fish. it was us and our two kids ages 9 and 11. kids loved to feed the fish (and birds) from the house, hubby walked to flats at low tide and caught bonefish and saw many, many sharks.

house was well equipped for everything we needed and will def be back. also loved lawerence. we rented his car and he always answered all our ?'s and helped when needed.

we did the sugar adventure full day tour and HIGHLY recommend them. also def visit Tropic of Cancer Beach. we also had our own private tour w/ the owners of Exuma Point bar and grill to see their pigs - was nice to see some pigs w/out the crowds.

Thanks for having us and we will def be back!

We think Lawrence is terrific as well. He helps to make the guest experience a special one. Exuma Point Bar & Grill is an absolute must for visitors. Eating brunch taking in that view is amazing. MeltAway is total Bliss

  • 5 of 5

Star gazing, gentle breezes, warm waters, cozy home, amazing views and so much more. We have just returned home from a 2 week stay at MeltAway and it did not disappoint. Nestled into a beautiful private location right on the magnificent Exuma waters. There was no greater feeling then...getting up in the morning and within a few steps you can sit and enjoy your morning coffee while watching the many different types of fish and our morning visits from Mr. Turtle; to kayaking to the different islands and sandbar in front of the house where you can take long walks during low tide; to snorkeling just in front of the house during high tide; to our afternoons of swimming and relaxing on the Aquaglide while laughing at our Caribbean Heron catching fish; and we were even blessed with visits from baby nurse & lemon sharks that are so amusing to watch go around in little circles; then heading into the evenings enjoying the BBQ and cold drinks in the very much thought out screened in porch where you can relax after a day of fun in the sun and watch the most beautiful sunsets; and when it’s finally time to call it a day open all the windows and enjoy the breeze while listening to the waves and looking up at the breathtaking stars. Sandy & David have thought of everything, and I mean everything, their home lacks nothing. Island people are the kindest you'll ever meet, always smiling and we enjoyed many outings during our stay but nothing beat coming back to relax at MeltAway. We had everything we needed right there and enjoyed all that Sandy & David have worked so hard to achieve. They have created a home away from home where people can make their own memories. MeltAway is exactly as described. The owners are honest, thoughtful, kind hearted people who return your messages within no time. Our 2018 vacation is one we will never forget as are the memories of our cherished new friends that we meet along the way. Thank you for sharing your piece of heaven with us, we are forever grateful. Island time! something we are hoping to achieve a little more of now that we are home. It was indeed the perfect getaway. MeltAway IS total Bliss. Ann & Ernie, NB, Canada
