Overview

About the property

Spacious 3 Bedroom, 2 Bathroom House - great for long term stays

Your worries will disappear as you drive into the yard and view the turquoise waters directly in front of MeltAway Cottage ( a non-smoking property).

We are located just 8 minutes drive east of George Town in Masters Harbour, Bahama Sound 11 West. The house is situated directly on the water’s edge across from an expansive sandbar (bonefish flats).

Our two-story house has a spacious open floor plan that includes a 200 sq. ft. screened porch as well as a partially shaded patio area. From either vantage point you can greet the day peacefully with your morning coffee/tea and kick back and relax at day’s end while enjoying a beverage, grilling a steak and marveling at the spectacular sunsets as you recount the day’s adventures.

MeltAway Cottage is a fully furnished 3 bedroom, 2-bath home with an additional loft space that can be used for sleeping or storage. There is no air-conditioning in the loft but there is a fan. All of the linens/pillows are new and or constantly replaced. Bedrooms have newly installed ceiling fans as well as air conditioning. Closets have plenty of hangers and storage space for your personal effects. We just put a new air conditioning system in the main living area (kitchen/living room). This system also helps to cool down the open loft area. The kitchen has stainless appliances (large French door fridge/freezer, microwave, stove/oven) with a complete set of cookware and small appliances (coffee maker, kettle, waffle maker, toaster, blender, mini-chopper). The dining area can seat up to ten people (6 comfortably at the table and 4 on bar stools at the islands). There is also a Weber BBQ in the screened porch with utensils for your grilling needs.

The partially shaded patio in front of the house has lounge chairs and a hammock. There are three kayaks available for your use (1 single and 1 tandem Hobie kayak and an Ocean kayak that is specifically suited for young adults. Life jackets for adults are also available – 1 XL and 2 ML. We just added a new inflatable stand-up paddle board (SUP) for your enjoyment.

We have telephone (up and down), internet and cable (CBS4, FOX, NBC, ABC plus 2 Bahamian Stations). The internet is not as high-speed as you are used to at home but it is just fine for checking emails and Skyping family and friends. We also have Apple TV and a hard drive with a wide selection of movies for all ages that you are welcome to use. There is an IPOD dock and an UE Bluetooth portable speaker available so please bring your music from home. We tend to listen to internet radio through the TV. We also have several games for the family (yahtzee, monopoly and scrabble).

You will find everything you need for your stay in and around George Town - grocery stores, a fantastic butcher shop (Prime Island Meats), restaurants/bars, liquor stores, bank machines (Scotia Bank/Royal Bank), gas station and you can purchase local souvenirs at the straw market and other small stores in town.

Exuma offers an abundance of sun, sand and sea as well as incredibly friendly people. Stretch out on a lounge chair and catch some rays or take a dip in the ocean in front of the house to start your day. Depending on the tide you can walk or kayak to the sandbar across from the house. There is also decent snorkeling along the shoreline so bring your gear. After our visit from Hurricane Matthew there's no telling what treasures you will find in the channel!

There are many spectacular beaches on both Great and Little Exuma that are accessible by car (a rental car is a must on the island). We have beach chairs, parasail beach blankets with tent pegs and beach towels that you can pack in the car as well as a few beach toys for your stay.

Being on or close to the water is what probably drew you to Exuma. Hop in the kayaks and paddle the shoreline or venture across to the nearby islands at high tide. The sand flats to the west are excellent for bone fishing. You can also arrange to have a guide with a boat pick you up right at the house. Renting a boat in George Town also allows access to all the beaches of Elizabeth Harbor and Stocking Island. Sightseeing, adventure tours (swim with the pigs, visit the iguanas, snorkel in underwater caves at Thunderball Grotto) and SCUBA diving trips can be also arranged in town.

If you enjoy daily walks/running you can lace up your sneakers and safely walk/run the many roads in the neighbourhood or with the proper footware explore the rocky shoreline. Folks are friendly so introduce yourself along the way.

If golf is your passion call and book a tee time and head north approximately 16 miles to Sandals Emerald Bay Resort and The Emerald Reef Golf Course (designed by Greg Norman).

A detailed PDF document will be provided to you that will give you tips on what to bring, detailed directions to various beaches and contact phone numbers to assist you in booking excursions. We will also be happy to answer your questions if you want to email us.

About Sandy Teiman

After living and working in the Canadian Arctic (Iqaluit, Nunavut) for over 34 years we decided that our retirement would lead us to a vacation property in the Bahamas. We moved from Nunavut and have retired to a lakefront home outside of Northbrook, Ontario. We love living by the water no matter where we are.

Sandy Teiman purchased this house in 2015

Why Sandy Teiman chose Great Exuma

After viewing several properties on both sides of the island we decided that the south side of the island suited our life style. We love to be on the water with our kayaks so a property with a boat well was what we chose. We are located close to several of the most amazing, almost deserted beaches one will ever find so we have the best of both worlds. The area is safe and a fabulous setting for couples, family vacations and obviously it's a retiree’s paradise.

What makes this house unique

MeltAway cottage offers tranquility, tropical breezes, beautiful vistas from a large screened porch, spectacular sunsets, star gazing with no light pollution, rustling palm trees and water lapping in the boat well with the tides right beside the house. Swimming is safe and you can literally walk to the sandbar (bonefish flats) off the porch steps at low tide. We just put in a small sand filled lagoon to make water access even easier for young children.

Pinch me!

  • 5 of 5

We just spent 8 days on this glorious island at Meltaway & we now moved this vacation to our number 1 spot! The waters..Oh my. The things to see and do! The outdoor setting at Meltaway was like a dream. Sitting out having coffee overlooking the Crystal clear waters or looking up at the stars at night listening to the waves lap the rocks while enjoying a Pina Colada...wow! We would put our snorkel gear on every morning high tide & evening high tide & walk right down into the waters. There is a moray eel we found just beyond the steps as you enter surrounded by lots of other fish. Make your way East & continue along the edge & you feel like you are in an aquarium! Even Saw lobsters hiding. At low tide We took the kayak out to the sand bar directly in front of the house & found some shells. We shopped at the markets for groceries & meat & cooked out on the grill provided everyday but 2. Visited the Tropic of Cancer Beach which is like being in a magazine! Took the 1/2 day water excursion & saw a blow hole, huge starfish, lookout point (small hike) Piggy Island (the best!) & snorkeled over 2 blue holes where we saw sting ray & many colorful fish but just swimming over a blue hole itself was jaw dropping. Spent time at the straw market to purchase trinkets & met the sweetest women. I even purchased a Bahamas sign & did not realize that they were wrapping it but we had already left thinking we had all of our items. The next day we drove around the straw Market to look at the docks & we heard these women telling us to come over. They said they had been looking for us all day the day before & recognized our vehicle & my blonde hair & said we had forgotten our sign!! Such great great people on the island. Sandy and David were wonderful & she answered every question any day via email. Lawrence the rental manager is always available & what a wonderful man! We had talked to people on our water Excursion who were staying at the Sandals Resort & were asking them if they had gone snorkeling off their property or visited several of the beautiful beaches & was sad to hear they just stayed on the property. What an experience they missed! The screened in porch was amazing to sit on also & just look out at the beautiful water. The a/c was great in the rental! The only negative we can say is that the no-see-um bugs were horrible so use the bug sprays provided asap! Don't wait like we did! We only scratched the surface on things to do. Thank you for this experience!

Owner's Response: Susan, thank you for the wonderful review of MeltAway Cottage and Exuma. We appreciate hearing that the island is on the top of your list of places to visit. It looks like you took advantage of all Exuma has to offer. We certainly agree with you that folks who don’t get out to explore the island miss out on some wonderful experiences. As for the no-see-ums, we find that baby oil helps a “bit” to deter them. It was a pleasure working with you to make your vacation memorable. We look forward to hearing from you in the future. All the best Sandy & David

Great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

The roads are hard to maneuver on the island, so it's never a fun drive to go "To and Fro" but the house is breathtaking, the view is exceptional, the house was fully stocked with whatever you needed, and everything works in the home. The house is in a great spot to explore North and South on the island. We loved the sandbar and snorkeling around the house. The house is exactly as described in the pictures. A baby Lemon Shark came to visit one day and we got to swim around with it right behind the house! My only issue would be the outdoor cameras, I assume they are for protection from vandalism and aimed in accordance for monitoring, we picked the house for extreme seclusion and privacy, I hope we did have that privacy. We look forward to visiting again and maybe bring some friends!

Amazing holiday

  • 5 of 5

We had the most amazing holiday on Exuma, staying at beautiful Meltaway Cottage. David and Sandy were super helpful as we were getting ready for the trip, offering lots of advice and helping us arrange a food shop for when we first arrived. The house itself is wonderful - right on the edge of the water and feels very private although there are neighbours nearby (all of whom were really friendly). The road from the main road up to the house is pretty bad - lots of pot holes and parts of the road that have been swept away, but we found that to be typical for non-main roads on the island and we just took it slowly! The house is really well equipped, had everything we needed in the kitchen, and lots of other stuff too, including beach towels and kayaks, great for heading to the sandbank across from the house.

We loved Exuma and would highly recommend the all day boat trip to see the swimming pigs, iguanas, Thunderball Grotto etc. We went with Sugar Adventures and they were great. So many once-in-a-lifetime experiences in one day, it was amazing. We also had a great time at the Tropic of Cancer Beach (crowded, with at least four other people there!), Coco Plum (with wooden swings in the sea), Jolly Hall (deserted but just round the corner from several bars and restaurants including Splash and Latitudes) and Jimmy Hill (great for breakers). Peace n Plenty on Thursday night was fun for bbq and live music. And we spent a day on Stocking Island - the kids loved the rope swings and volleyball, and we swam across the channel to the beach on the far side of the island. No luck finding shells, but super view and again, deserted.

It was the holiday of a lifetime and I do hope we can make it back to the Bahamas again one day!
