Misleading information about outdoor space a disappointment
Both the property manager and the concierge were very helpful and friendly. The building and apartment were well maintained and superficially clean, but on closer inspection (corners, behind doors) there was an accumulation of dust. Kitchen was well equipped to a high standard (all Bosch appliances), the lounge was light, spacious and nicely furnished, and the bedroom lovely, with lots of storage space (though very few clothes hangers). The location was central, just off the Gran Via, but opposite the apartment was a "sauna" and what appeared to be hostel accommodation, so the lounge did not have a pleasant outlook. The biggest disappointment, however, was that the property listing claims the apartment has both a balcony and a terrace. The "balcony" was a small, permanently shuttered utility area off the kitchen, home to the boiler, the air conditioning unit and a clothes-drying rack. The "terrace" off the bedroom was a small rectangular area with no furniture (and little room for any), looking directly across into other apartments undergoing renovation and looking down to a pile of discarded packaging and rubbish. The promise of a terrace had been a determining factor in choosing this apartment, so that we could enjoy breakfast outside, and sit out later in the evening with a glass of wine. Even had there been an outside area in which to sit comfortably, we would have been overlooked by the workmen in the opposite apartments. This apartment was not cheap, the equivalent of the cost of a four-star hotel, so we were very disappointed by the poor outdoor space. Another small annoyance was that there was no facility to leave our luggage somewhere secure beyond the check-out time of 11am (again, a service which is more or less standard in hotels charging a similar rate), but had to pay for it to be stored in the adjoining shop by their remarkably sullen staff.
