About the property

Mountain and valley views, fenced yard, high-speed WiFi, modern kitchen, clean

Starbright Retreat House is a delightful vacation home for travelers looking for something special. Nestled near the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Crestone, Colorado, the retreat house is the perfect vacation rental basecamp for exploring the San Luis Valley, our state's best-kept secret. After a full day of hiking, biking, roadtripping, visiting Crestone's many spiritual centers, or having your mind blown at the Great Sand Dunes National Park, you'll love coming home to modern amenities.

The master suite features a king-size bed and private adjoining bath with tub, shower, and vessel sink. A sliding glass door leads to a deck overlooking the fenced back yard. Gaze at Challenger Peak, which is absolutely breathtaking on clear nights when the stars are bright. (Those nights inspired the name "Starbright Retreat House.") A second bedroom provides a double bed and a window with valley views.

Love to cook? We do, which is why we take pride in offering our guests a modern and well-equipped kitchen, featuring a gas stove, Bosch dishwasher, concrete countertops, and a farmhouse sink. We stock the cupboards with tea and organic Fair Trade coffee beans.

Would you rather relax and stay in instead of venturing out and about? The house is located on a cul de sac, so there is no through traffic. Catch up on your reading in a quiet setting, watch the sun set over the valley, count the number of birds you see, start that novel you've been thinking about, or just sit back on the front porch and breathe the heavenly scent of pinyon and juniper (especially after a rainstorm). You may see deer walking across the driveway. They're not in a hurry, and you shouldn't be either.

Have you stayed with us before? We offer loyalty discounts to returning Starbright Retreat House guests; please inquire.

About Ruth Baranowski

I'm a traveler, writer, editor, dog mom, tree-hugging nature lover, fan of renewable energy, wine drinker, pretty good cook, and an enthusiastic amateur photographer. After staying in VRBO houses across the United States and in several countries, I think I know what makes a vacation stay in a home special. I am thrilled to be hosting guests from around the world, helping to make their precious vacations more memorable.

Ruth Baranowski purchased this house in 2008

Why Ruth Baranowski chose South Central

"The mountains are calling, and I must go." John Muir's statement sums up how I feel if I'm away from the Sangre de Cristos for any length of time. I love falling asleep to a view of our snowy peaks under starry skies with coyotes howling in the distance. Once I experienced the magic of Crestone's crazy wild nature, I never wanted to live in a city again. We originally purchased this house as our retreat from our busy lives on the Front Range and visited it every other weekend for two years. Finally the Sunday afternoon trips back to the urban corridor became too much to bear, and we moved to Crestone full time. Best thing we ever did.

What makes this house unique

Starbright Retreat House has a great vibe. It's a charming Southwestern-style house tucked into the trees and backed by mountain peaks. It has quality finishes and special touches: concrete counters in the kitchen, a zia sun symbol etched on the front door window by a local artist, solar tubes in the kitchen and bathroom that stream natural light into the rooms, and knotty pine doors. While living on the property for 7 years, we added a few touches of our own, including a solar-powered geodesic dome greenhouse. This is a special house in a beautiful area, and we can't wait to share it with you.

Quiet, private retreat house

  • 5 of 5

Ruth is a fabulous host and her attention to detail shows everywhere. Bathrooms are lovely and she equips them with quality towels. The surrounding piñons provide almost complete visual privacy from other houses. Easy hikes with dramatic views abound, and you can start from the house. Highly recommended!

The house was wonderful and had everything we needed.

I can't say enough about what a wonderful experience this stay was. You feel like you are totally alone in the middle of a forest of ancient junipers, buzzing with hummingbirds. We sat on the front porch with a view of mountains way off in the distance and watched the entire day unfold and turn into night. The deck in the back had a beautiful view of the mountains in our backyard which were breathtaking. If you are looking for a very relaxing getaway in a place where it's so quiet you can hear yourself breath, this cottage is for you.

Perfect Home Away from Home

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay in Crestone—This cabin was the perfect home away from home. The kitchen was equipped with everything we needed. The yard was fenced and we loved that since we brought our puppies!

The hosts left plenty of tips and info for special sights and hikes. I had a question about a center in town and Ruth was quick to respond and send more suggestions.

It was nice, quiet, and private. We really had an amazing time and our stay here allowed us to relax and not worry about anything.

Thank you!

A home away from home

  • 5 of 5

We were very impressed by the house and would love to go back. The kitchen is incredibly nice and well-stocked with anything you might need to cook a meal (except the food of course!). My husband was able to make us a fantastic dinner without any problem and we ate all our breakfasts and lunches in too. The front porch is a nice peaceful place to sit in the evening and read a book as the sun goes down. And of course we enjoyed our stay with our dog. I thought it was a nice touch that Ruth provided covers so the dog could get on the couch and bed without dirtying her really nice accommodations. We opted to keep the dog on the floor. He enjoyed the backyard and we enjoyed the convenience of letting him out in the morning the way we would at home. Not wanting you to miss anything, Ruth provides a great list of trails and places to visit during your stay. We were grateful for her cuing us into Liberty Trail, the back door to the sand dunes. I have never stayed somewhere better. Ruth truly provides a place you can feel at home.

Tranquil neighborhood beneath a canopy of stars

  • 5 of 5

I give this home my highest recommendation. Mountain view was extraordinary, hummingbirds zipped around the windows and trees outside, and shooting stars filled the night sky.

Fabulous Basecamp

  • 5 of 5

We were four adults and one Labrador and found the accommodations perfect for our needs. The house was beautifully equipped and we never found ourselves lacking for anything, including a speedy wifi connection. We were on the go every day hiking the scenic trails nearby. Though the hikes could be described as strenuous, we found the scenery absolutely breathtaking. If you are in the shape to explore the back country, it is well worth the trek. The best part was coming back to the house, taking a shower, eating home cooked meals and relaxing on the back porch. The sunsets were amazing. This far surpassed our expectations and we plan on returning. Ruth was a perfect contact person! Thank you again for a wonderful long weekend!
