Mountain and valley views, fenced yard, high-speed WiFi, modern kitchen

Starbright Retreat House is a delightful vacation home for travelers looking for something special. Nestled near the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Crestone, Colorado, the retreat house is the perfect vacation rental basecamp for exploring the San Luis Valley, our state's best-kept secret. After a full day of hiking, biking, roadtripping, visiting Crestone's many spiritual centers, or having your mind blown at the Great Sand Dunes National Park, you'll love coming home to modern amenities.

The master suite features a king-size bed and private adjoining bath with tub, shower, and vessel sink. A sliding glass door leads to a deck overlooking the fenced back yard. Gaze at Challenger Peak, which is absolutely breathtaking on clear nights when the stars are bright. (Those nights inspired the name "Starbright Retreat House.") A second bedroom provides a double bed and a window with valley views.

Love to cook? We do, which is why we take pride in offering our guests a modern and well-equipped kitchen, featuring a gas stove, Bosch dishwasher, concrete countertops, and a farmhouse sink. We stock the cupboards with tea and organic Fair Trade coffee beans.

Would you rather relax and stay in instead of venturing out and about? The house is located on a cul de sac, so there is no through traffic. Catch up on your reading in a quiet setting, watch the sun set over the valley, count the number of birds you see, start that novel you've been thinking about, or just sit back on the front porch and breathe the heavenly scent of pinyon and juniper (especially after a rainstorm). You may see deer walking across the driveway. They're not in a hurry, and you shouldn't be either.

Have you stayed with us before? We offer loyalty discounts to returning Starbright Retreat House guests; please inquire.

About Ruth Baranowski

I'm a cook, writer, editor, dog mom, tree-hugging nature lover, fan of renewable energy, wine drinker, and an enthusiastic amateur photographer. After staying in VRBO houses across the United States and in several countries, I think I know what makes a vacation stay in a home special. I am thrilled to be hosting guests from around the world, helping to make their precious vacations more memorable.

Ruth Baranowski purchased this house in 2008

Why Ruth Baranowski chose Colorado

"The mountains are calling, and I must go." John Muir's statement sums up how I feel if I'm away from the Sangre de Cristos for any length of time. I love falling asleep to a view of snowy peaks under starry skies with coyotes howling in the distance. Once I experienced the magic of Crestone's crazy wild nature, I never wanted to live in a city again.

What makes this house unique

We knew this house was THE ONE when we first pulled into the driveway and saw a charming Southwestern-style house tucked into the trees and backed by mountain peaks. The inside of the house has quality finishes and special touches: concrete counters in the kitchen, a zia sun symbol etched on the front door window by a local artist, solar tubes in the kitchen and bathroom that stream natural light into the rooms, and knotty pine doors. While living on the property for 7 years, we added a few touches of our own, including a solar-powered geodesic dome greenhouse. This is a special house in a beautiful area, and we can't wait to share it with you.

Just What I Needed!

  • 5 of 5

Arriving late in the evening, my friend and I were so pleased to step into the warm quiet of this lovely home. The beds are so comfortable, the kitchen and house immaculate and stocked with everything we needed. Enjoyed each morning just lazing around. (Super dog friendly.) Hiked in the area one day, enjoyed the hot springs the next. People in town are friendly. The brewpub's beer top quality. The sights are stunning. The night skies breathtaking. Saw wildlife ranging from chipmunks to coyotes and antelope and owls. I highly recommend this beautiful, secluded home. I'll definitely return at the first good opportunity!

What a lovely house and place to stay. Description of house very accurate including how it is stocked. If you are looking for peace and quiet with wonderful views this is your place. Ruth is wonderful she responds to your emails promptly. She provides great customer service. We will return. The house was nice, clean and ready for our stay. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to get away and unwind. I love cooking so having a well stocked kitchen was fabulous.

A great cabin on a beautiful location nestled against the mountains

  • 5 of 5

We spent Labor Day weekend at the Starbright Retreat House and had a wonderful time! The yard and surroundings were perfect for our kids, ages 4 and 2, and the front and back porches were great for Mom and Dad. The cabin is stocked with everything you need and well appointed with other nice amenities you may not have thought to bring from home. It's comfortable, clean and modern. It's the San Luis Valley so of course the stars are amazing! We do missions work in Alamosa each September, so we'll definitely be back in years to come.

Is there a word beyond perfect?

  • 5 of 5

For us, it was like Shangri-la with a fully equipped kitchen. Looking for peace and quiet, yet with plenty to do and see? This is it. Ruth couldn't be kinder or more helpful. The house is a place where we felt comfortable and at home right away. I guess our best recommendation is that we're hoping to return to Crestone next year and really hoping Ruth's house is available to us then.

Very clean and plenty of room

  • 5 of 5

The listing is just as described, and the home was very clean. The owner provided excellent service and responded immediately to my questions. The two of us stayed for three nights and had a wonderful time. The bedrooms and bathrooms were large and well appointed. The kitchen had everything we needed to make our stay comfortable. The hummingbirds are a delight and come right up to you on the front porch. It was so quiet and the views of the mountains and the valleys were exceptional. Since there was no TV, we were glad to bring our sketch pads and pencils. Touring around Crestone and seeing the spiritual centers was not what we expected, but was a good experience. The highlight was going to the Great Sand Dunes which are very close by. Be prepared for the mosquitoes in the mountains! We would recommend this property.
