About the property

Mountain and valley views, fenced yard, high-speed WiFi, modern kitchen, clean

Starbright Retreat House is a delightful vacation home for travelers looking for something special. Nestled near the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Crestone, Colorado, the retreat house is the perfect vacation rental basecamp for exploring the San Luis Valley, our state's best-kept secret. After a full day of hiking, biking, roadtripping, visiting Crestone's many spiritual centers, or having your mind blown at the Great Sand Dunes National Park, you'll love coming home to modern amenities.

The master suite features a king-size bed and private adjoining bath with tub, shower, and vessel sink. A sliding glass door leads to a deck overlooking the fenced back yard. Gaze at Challenger Peak, which is absolutely breathtaking on clear nights when the stars are bright. (Those nights inspired the name "Starbright Retreat House.") A second bedroom provides a double bed and a window with valley views.

Love to cook? We do, which is why we take pride in offering our guests a modern and well-equipped kitchen, featuring a gas stove, Bosch dishwasher, concrete countertops, and a farmhouse sink. We stock the cupboards with tea and organic Fair Trade coffee beans.

Would you rather relax and stay in instead of venturing out and about? The house is located on a cul de sac, so there is no through traffic. Catch up on your reading in a quiet setting, watch the sun set over the valley, count the number of birds you see, start that novel you've been thinking about, or just sit back on the front porch and breathe the heavenly scent of pinyon and juniper (especially after a rainstorm). You may see deer walking across the driveway. They're not in a hurry, and you shouldn't be either.

Have you stayed with us before? We offer loyalty discounts to returning Starbright Retreat House guests; please inquire.

About Ruth Baranowski

I'm a traveler, writer, editor, dog mom, tree-hugging nature lover, fan of renewable energy, wine drinker, pretty good cook, and an enthusiastic amateur photographer. After staying in VRBO houses across the United States and in several countries, I think I know what makes a vacation stay in a home special. I am thrilled to be hosting guests from around the world, helping to make their precious vacations more memorable.

Ruth Baranowski purchased this house in 2008

Why Ruth Baranowski chose Crestone

"The mountains are calling, and I must go." John Muir's statement sums up how I feel if I'm away from the Sangre de Cristos for any length of time. I love falling asleep to a view of our snowy peaks under starry skies with coyotes howling in the distance. Once I experienced the magic of Crestone's crazy wild nature, I never wanted to live in a city again. We originally purchased this house as our retreat from our busy lives on the Front Range and visited it every other weekend for two years. Finally the Sunday afternoon trips back to the urban corridor became too much to bear, and we moved to Crestone full time. Best thing we ever did.

What makes this house unique

Starbright Retreat House has a great vibe. It's a charming Southwestern-style house tucked into the trees and backed by mountain peaks. It has quality finishes and special touches: concrete counters in the kitchen, a zia sun symbol etched on the front door window by a local artist, solar tubes in the kitchen and bathroom that stream natural light into the rooms, and knotty pine doors. While living on the property for 7 years, we added a few touches of our own, including a solar-powered geodesic dome greenhouse. This is a special house in a beautiful area, and we can't wait to share it with you.

A Wonderful Experience!

  • 5 of 5

The house is delightful and Ruth is so thoughtful -- from a personal thank you card welcoming us to fresh flowers on the kitchen table. She has everything you would need, including tupperware bowls for leftovers after you cook in her well-stocked kitchen. Our dogs loved the fenced backyard and walking through the neighborhood with us. Nearby hiking trails are fabulous. We will definitely be back!

Lovely Getaway

  • 5 of 5

On our return visit we spent our downtime enjoying the front porch admiring the expansive views and cooler temps. Very much enjoyed fresh vegetables from the wonderful greenhouse. The house is well stocked with teas, coffees, and all necessities making the visit very carefree. Our days were spent hiking in the spectacular Sangre De Cristo Wilderness and it was great to come home to such a relaxing and well taken care of place. We look forward to our next visit!

Breath-taking Views, Lovely Home, Wonderful Owner

  • 5 of 5

My 17-year-old daughter and I stayed at Ruth's beautiful Starbright Retreat for 15 nights, along with our 8-year-old dog Addie. Our lives have been forever changed by our trip to Crestone. Our stay encompassed two painful anniversaries.... One year since the passing of my Daddy, and ten years since we lost someone very dear to us.

From the moment we walked into the Starbright, we felt at home. We were greeted by the owner Ruth, handpicked flowers, and a lovely note. She is such a sweet soul.

Her home is peaceful, tranquil, beautiful. Sometime during our explorations of the sacred lands, cooking wonderful organic meals in the clean and well-stocked kitchen, or admiring the breath-taking view from the back deck...We began to laugh again... create... heal. Even Addie enjoyed her stay at the Starbright. There is a lovely fenced backyard that she explored several times a day. We also found her sunning on the back deck daily.

Ruth, your kindness, and hospitality were so appreciated. Words could never express our gratitude for such an enlightening and life changing adventure. ** Also, being Carolina girls, we couldn't help but leave a small Welch shell in your sand garden.

Thank you so much!!!

Great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

The home is clean, beds comfortable and everything that might be needed is supplied (other than food). Much better equipped than all the other rental homes we have stayed in. We hope to stay again for a longer period.

One note; don't follow your phone or vehicle navigation as the main road (Camino Baca Grande) is washed out close to the home and basically a four wheel drive road. Stay on the paved roads via Wagon Wheel.

Owner's Response: You are so right about not using GPS, Don, and thanks for reinforcing that for future guests. I provide detailed directions so that people do not try to drive through on Camino Baca Grande, especially in the winter. It looks like it's the quickest route, but in this case looks are deceiving. There's a better way that involves paved roads. ;) Thanks and hope to host you again soon! You are a terrific guest. ~Ruth

Quiet, private retreat house

  • 5 of 5

Ruth is a fabulous host and her attention to detail shows everywhere. Bathrooms are lovely and she equips them with quality towels. The surrounding piñons provide almost complete visual privacy from other houses. Easy hikes with dramatic views abound, and you can start from the house. Highly recommended!
