About the property

Mountain and valley views, fenced yard, high-speed WiFi, modern kitchen, clean

Starbright Retreat House is a delightful vacation home for travelers looking for something special. Nestled near the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains in Crestone, Colorado, the retreat house is the perfect vacation rental basecamp for exploring the San Luis Valley, our state's best-kept secret. After a full day of hiking, biking, roadtripping, visiting Crestone's many spiritual centers, or having your mind blown at the Great Sand Dunes National Park, you'll love coming home to modern amenities.

The master suite features a king-size bed and private adjoining bath with tub, shower, and vessel sink. A sliding glass door leads to a deck overlooking the fenced back yard. Gaze at Challenger Peak, which is absolutely breathtaking on clear nights when the stars are bright. (Those nights inspired the name "Starbright Retreat House.") A second bedroom provides a double bed and a window with valley views.

Love to cook? We do, which is why we take pride in offering our guests a modern and well-equipped kitchen, featuring a gas stove, Bosch dishwasher, concrete countertops, and a farmhouse sink. We stock the cupboards with tea and organic Fair Trade coffee beans.

Would you rather relax and stay in instead of venturing out and about? The house is located on a cul de sac, so there is no through traffic. Catch up on your reading in a quiet setting, watch the sun set over the valley, count the number of birds you see, start that novel you've been thinking about, or just sit back on the front porch and breathe the heavenly scent of pinyon and juniper (especially after a rainstorm). You may see deer walking across the driveway. They're not in a hurry, and you shouldn't be either.

Have you stayed with us before? We offer loyalty discounts to returning Starbright Retreat House guests; please inquire.

About Ruth Baranowski

I'm a traveler, writer, editor, dog mom, tree-hugging nature lover, fan of renewable energy, wine drinker, pretty good cook, and an enthusiastic amateur photographer. After staying in VRBO houses across the United States and in several countries, I think I know what makes a vacation stay in a home special. I am thrilled to be hosting guests from around the world, helping to make their precious vacations more memorable.

Ruth Baranowski purchased this house in 2008

Why Ruth Baranowski chose South Central

"The mountains are calling, and I must go." John Muir's statement sums up how I feel if I'm away from the Sangre de Cristos for any length of time. I love falling asleep to a view of our snowy peaks under starry skies with coyotes howling in the distance. Once I experienced the magic of Crestone's crazy wild nature, I never wanted to live in a city again. We originally purchased this house as our retreat from our busy lives on the Front Range and visited it every other weekend for two years. Finally the Sunday afternoon trips back to the urban corridor became too much to bear, and we moved to Crestone full time. Best thing we ever did.

What makes this house unique

Starbright Retreat House has a great vibe. It's a charming Southwestern-style house tucked into the trees and backed by mountain peaks. It has quality finishes and special touches: concrete counters in the kitchen, a zia sun symbol etched on the front door window by a local artist, solar tubes in the kitchen and bathroom that stream natural light into the rooms, and knotty pine doors. While living on the property for 7 years, we added a few touches of our own, including a solar-powered geodesic dome greenhouse. This is a special house in a beautiful area, and we can't wait to share it with you.

Wonderful getaway & 5-Star Hospitality

  • 5 of 5

A perfectly-appointed getaway with hotel-quality personal touches greeted my husband, me and our 2 dogs when we arrived at this retreat home. It truly is a comfortable and special getaway in which we felt welcomed and at home, without feeling like we were in "someone else's" personal space. It was very easy to settle into, relax easily, live and cook in, and use as a home base.

Comfortable king-sized bedroom with ensuite bathroom faces the backyard with a sliding door onto the back deck, and the second bedroom with queen bed and sitting chair faces the front. A second bathroom serves the second bedroom along with the living / dining room area. The kitchen is nicer than mine at home and stocked with newer, clean pots, pans, utensils, plus lovely dishes and glassware, storage containers for leftovers, and a fun selection of unique coffees and teas which was a nice touch. No a/c necessary if you're mindful of opening windows in the cool of the evening. Thankfully no TV. Wifi works perfectly, although we made a point to stay off most of the time.

The back door opens onto a deck and well-fenced landscape of fragrant pinion pines in which all cactus has been cleared from the sandy desert soil and perfectly safe for any exploring dog or kid. Past the fenced area, the owner tends a lovely greenhouse which was inspiring to look inside. The area, roads and home are very quiet and encouraged us to slow our minds and bodies, listen to the hummingbirds call to each other, appreciate gorgeous conglomerate rocks, and remember what's important in life. Looking through the guest book, this rental sees visitors coming from points all across the country, repeat occupants, longer-term stays. It is no wonder why!

There's also quite a bit to do, but if you're looking into this rental you probably have that part figured out already and you just need a place to land. This is a great spot and we hope to be back again ourselves in the future. Thank you for the opportunity indeed.

The stay was wonderful

  • 5 of 5

Had a great time in Crestone, and the house had everything I needed. The wireless internet access worked great, as did everything in the house. I only wish I had booked a longer stay.

Perfect Crestone retreat

  • 5 of 5

This house was perfect for a 3-day getaway from the city. It was well-equipped for us to make breakfast & dinners, impeccably clean, and open to gorgeous views from both the front and back decks.

Ruth obviously takes pride in being a great host. She met us when we arrived and gave us advice about the area and some of the must-see local attractions.

Crestone is beautiful town nestled right up against the Sangre de Cristo mountains and allowed us easy access to the Sand Dunes and some incredible hot springs.

Spacious, well-maintained house is perfect get-away

  • 5 of 5

We loved our relaxing stay at Starbright Retreat House near Crestone Peak. The attentive owner, Ruth, met us and made sure we had everything we needed. The house is extremely clean and well-equipped--a lantern for an evening walk and more kitchen supplies than I expected. It is very dog-friendly with a fenced-in back yard area and tile floors. There is no TV but excellent WIFI for devices. We were sad to leave.

Two adults and a "City Slicker" dog

  • 4 of 5

We stayed at Ruth's house in April. The house itself is beautiful and I cannot say enough about how much we enjoyed the house. All the little touches Ruth has - the decorating, the layout of the home, the bathroom and kitchen amenities, were worthy of a 5 star hotel suite. Her responses to inquiries were immediate and the privacy we enjoyed was exactly what we needed.

So, why the 4 instead of 5 stars? The yard. We are not hikers and neither is our dog. For me, there was not enough information about the "natural" yard on the website or prior reviews. It has a significant slope to it, which would not be a problem if it was not so incredibly rocky with low hanging branches. Navigating it during the day was an adventure and at night was scary.

My "city slicker" dog, who is a big shepherd, was used to a yard with grass. I didn't see one blade anywhere. Dog owners be aware. For some it may not be an issue, but for me it was.

I would certainly stay here again and recommend it highly to others - but I would have my dog vacation elsewhere.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the feedback, Mary. I will add text to our listing description to make sure prospective guests know that it is indeed a "natural" mountain yard and not a manicured yard. Glad that you had a great stay in the house, and I'm happy that Charger got to see his first deer! ~Ruth
