About Rod Larkin

This cabin was built in 1963 and has been in our family since 1970. We moved to Grayling in 2010 and we live less than 10 minutes from our cabin. We love living in the Grayling area and especially on the Au Sable River. This is God's Country for sure!

Rod Larkin purchased this cabin in 1970

Why Rod Larkin chose Grayling

My parents bought this property when I was 13 years old and I've been spending time here for 47 years and counting. I purchased this property from my parents in 1986.

The Grayling area has so much to offer from pristine rivers and lakes to Hartwick Pines, endless miles of hiking and ORV trails. It's a great place to stay and a great place to play!

What makes this cabin unique

Our little log cabin is nothing fancy so if you are looking for a posh resort-- keep looking. We cater to people who want to get away from it all. We cater to families with kids and pets. We cater to sportsman who love to fish and hunt. People come here and return here more for the outdoors and all it has to offer more than the indoors.

With both the Au Sable and Manistee river systems in the Grayling area-- it's a fly fishing, canoeing, kayaking, float tubing meca!

Everyone who stays with us says-- "You have thought of everything we might need or want to have during our stay." We love helping people make great memories Up North!

We offer all this at a price that's hard to beat-- less than just about any motel/hotel overnight price you'll find.

Awesome cabin in the woods!

  • 5 of 5

Owners are very friendly and have the cabin stocked with everything you need for a memorable vacation, from games and movies to a fully stocked kitchen indoors, to all kinds of activities for the out of doors, including an awesome fire pit. All you need to bring is food for your meals! Just a short 500 yard walk to the Au Sable for fly fishing, kayaking and swimming. Due to storms in the area, the fishing was a bust, but the hiking trails and wildlife kept us busy. The cabin is made for making memories with your family and friends. What a great place for dogs to run and swim!

It was indeed a cozy cabin in the woods

  • 5 of 5

It was a 3-1/2 hour drive to get to the cabin. The last few miles were on dirt roads, so that tells you that the cabin is in a remote area. The cabin has neighbors a few hundred yards on either side, but they are blocked by trees. Across the road is state owned land that goes for miles. Behind the cabin is federal land that also goes on forever. There is a short trail carved through the back of the property where sogns of wildlife may be observed. The property is walking distance to the Au Sable river, and Rod offers two canoes for renters to use. Wakely Lake is a short drive east on 72. There are tarails there to explore. Unfortunately, we didn't get a chance to visit there.

The cabin is an older structure, but well maintained. The water is from a well, but tastes like city water. There is no internet, Rod said that Verizon, or Sprint and can tether, or hotspot. We use Metropcs and were able to get and send texts, as well as use our tablets. So, if you use any of those three services, you may be able to reach out a little.

There are literally hundreds of movies and tv series on dvd and vcr tapes, mostly dvds occupy your time there, as well as many board games and outdoor games. There is a big fire pit and two grills. You may want to bring an ax to cut the supplied logs into useable size.

All in all we had a nice stay, and enjoyed the solitude. Grayling is about fifteen minutes away, and there are some shops and eateries there. We bought supplies at Family Fare. It is a really nice supermarket. You'll fond everything you could need there.

Lastly, the cabin has everything that you need except food. The cabinets in the kitchen even had a supply of spices. There is an air conditioner, heater, stove, microwave, toaster, tv, vcr, dvd player and radio in the cabin. It's a nice getaway.

Adorable Cabin in the Woods

  • 5 of 5

This was our second stay in this lovely little cabin and once again we enjoyed it very much. We appreciate that most everything we need (other than food) is already supplied with the cabin so we don't need to pack quite so much stuff into the car. Most of all, however, we appreciate being able to bring our two pups here with us. The yard is spacious and well-kept with both sunny and shady areas and when we're not off exploring the surrounding area, they love sniffing around or just hanging outside with us while we relax.

During the day we played games in the shady area of the yard and even though it was pretty warm (mid-80s), it was pleasant under the trees. At night it's very dark and there is a good clear spot in the yard for watching the stars or meteor showers. We weren't bothered much by insects during the day or at night, but that may have been partly due to how dry it's been.

Overall, we highly recommend this cute little cabin and look forward to returning sometime for another pleasant stay.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your great review of our cabin. Yes-- pretty much all you need to bring is your food and clothes because our cabin has everything a person needs--- and then some. The huge yard is a big plus for kids, pets, outdoor games, etc... At $89 a night it's one of the best values a person will find!

Perfect location to enjoy a quiet place in the woods.

  • 4 of 5

Rod is a great host. The place was nice and clean and just as advertised. The river is within walking distance and there was a nice spot to jump in and cool off. I would come again.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review of our cabin. There are no surprises when guests arrive. Everything is exactly as pictures and described on our VRBO listing. The Au Sable River is a true gem and the landing at the end of our road which is just 500 yards from the cabin is a great spot to swim and cool off, fish, and put your kayaks, canoes, and float tubes in and out.
