About the property

2 Bedroom, 2 Bath, Sleeps 6

Take a step back in time to the Old West. It doesn't get much more atmospheric than this, folks. A real piece of West Texas history, La Casa Vieja is a gorgeously restored home in Marathon, Texas that was originally an old farmhouse built in 1917. Now, nearly 100 years later, it is a beautiful little hacienda, complete with a casita at the rear of the property that can accommodate additional guests. Located at the foot of Big Bend National Park and just a few blocks from the world-famous Gage Hotel, this property is a stunner. With custom woodwork throughout, this delicately-appointed 950-square-foot home sits on a corner lot and offers a beautiful enclosed private patio/courtyard for privacy. Surrounded by pretty, native desert vegetation, the custom features of this home are far too numerous to mention. Here are a list of just some of them:

~ 10 ft. ceilings

~ Open floor plan

~ Latilla ceiling in living room featuring wood beams with corbels

~ Pressed tin tile ceiling in kitchen

~ Saltillo tile and original refinished hardwood flooring

~ Mesquite custom–built kitchen bar top

~ Kraftmaid hickory cabinets in kitchen

~ Pendant lighting

~ Tiled backsplash

~ Textured walls

~ Kiva fireplace in living room

~ Alhambra-tiled shower and Talavera-tiled sink in bathroom

~ Original, restored antique old Mexico wood church doors (1920) at front entry

~ Spacious closet

~ Private and tranquil courtyard w/additional, outdoor kiva fireplace

~ Shaded front porch

~ Flat-screen satellite TV

~ Wifi enabled

The home features evaporative cooling and heating units. A new metal fence adds privacy to this exquisite property. Other details worth mentioning include: Completely new electrical and plumbing, insulation in the flooring, walls and ceilings, gas stove and water heater, and a metal roof w/ original tin on sides.

Whether you're here for a wedding or event, are on an artist's retreat, are off to explore the surrounding area, or are simply here to enjoy the peaceful, gorgeous surroundings, La Casa Vieja is your home away from home in Marathon.

About Spencer Aaronson

I'm a long-time resident of Southern California who travels often to this part of Texas for leisure purposes myself. In my own travels over the years, I have been the beneficiary of incredible hospitality in the many unique properties where I've had the good fortune of resting my head, so I'm only too happy to return the favor and provide people with their own memorable vacation experiences.

Spencer Aaronson purchased this house in 2015

Why Spencer Aaronson chose Marathon

After taking a road trip through the Big Bend area several years ago on my way to Memphis, I was hooked on this area. Something about this particular part of the country really resonated with me. I'm not sure if it is the peace and quiet, the wide open spaces, the romance of a lost time, or, perhaps most likely, all of the above. I've been making routine trips to the region since then and finally took the plunge and bought this property. I have a major soft spot for carefully-restored historical properties, and this one definitely fit the bill. A lot of care went into this renovation. I fell in love with it the moment it popped up on a real estate website I refer to. When I made a trip out there and saw it in person, I loved it even more. I have no doubt you'll feel the same.

What makes this house unique

This is a serious step back in time to the Pancho Villa era. But with all the modern amenities and luxuries one has come to expect in these unique properties. Here are just some of them:

Spectacular!

  • 5 of 5

Walking into the courtyard at La Casa Vieja is like being wrapped in a warm, friendly West Texas hug! We thoroughly enjoyed spending the evenings outside in this space. The house has outstanding craftsmanship with special attention to detail in all the wood and tile work. We felt so at home here, and you will too!! Highly recommend this marvelous house for your stay in the Big Bend region.

Great place off the beaten path

  • 4 of 5

This was a wonderful find. Not so special until you opened the courtyard. Tons of privacy and plenty of space. This 100 year old home and casita have been lovingly restored with much attention to detail. The only drawback was a house across the street that had a lot of dogs in the yard. The first night they were very noisy but the other two nights we didn't hear a peep from them. Would recommend this pace to others.

Owner's Response: We're so glad you enjoyed your time here, Trudy! Thanks for the kind words. Sorry about the noise from the neighboring dogs. Because Marathon is otherwise such an unbelievably tranquil and quiet place, one does tend to note ambient noise a lot more than they might somewhere else. (And there are quite a number of pet owners in Marathon. So the sound of barking dogs is something of a given in town. Fortunately, we don't get too many complaints about it.) In any case, you're obviously welcome back anytime. Would love to have you!

Nice decor

  • 3 of 5

After some confusion on arrival time which was late afternoon,4pm we arrived at 3pm. Contacted owner and he said it would be open at 4 pm At 4:20,home was still not unlocked. After phone call to owner,he said property manager was on the way. Air conditioning was not up to par. If you are in any way handicapped, forget this unit. Four large steps to entry door, and no hand rail. No smoke or carbon monoxide detectors that I could see any where in this rental, and with gas fired heaters in bedroom and living room, this rental is definitely NOT up to fire codes. I would stay at the Gage hotel next time?

Owner's Response: Thank you for the feedback, Gordon. We strive hard to ensure our guests have a pleasant experience with us. I'm sorry the stay wasn't entirely to your satisfaction. Just to clarify, though, I must note for potential guests reading this that your party had arrived long before designated check-in time while our cleaning crew was still working to prepare the unit for your stay after our previous guests left. Check-in time was and is always clearly stated in both the listing and the welcome letter guests receive. As you can appreciate, our crew needs that time to prepare the unit properly for incoming guests. In any case, despite the fact that this was clearly an error due to guest oversight, as you'll recall, we diplomatically apologized for any misunderstanding and even graciously refunded a portion of the night's stay to compensate for any inconvenience you might have felt. As for these other issues you're referencing, please note we've been in operation since 2014 and this is the first time we've ever received any feedback of this nature. Pictures of the home and the entry are and have been since the beginning all prominently displayed on the website, as is all info about the (practically new) air and heating units. In fact, the home had an extensive remodel done in 2012 by the primary building company in Marathon which does all the work for the Gage Hotel. (In fact, the Gage often refers its overflow guests to us.) In any case, we're sorry you had these issues. We hope you'll come see us again.

A good visit.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed three nights at La Casa Vieja and enjoyed the stay very much. The location worked great for us. We got to the MacDonald Observatory, over to Alpine, and into the Big Bend National Park readily. The home and guest room are quaint and charming. We could not figure out how to work the television, which was an annoyance. But we didn't go to Marathon to watch television, so it was only an annoyance.

Owner's Response: Hi Don! Glad you enjoyed your visit. (Our apologies about the television. We weren't aware you were having problems with it. We always encourage guests to reach out when they're having any kinds of issues. We checked and it turned out it was simply the batteries in the remote control. They've been promptly replaced.) Anyway, hope you'll come back soon. If you do, we'll give you a 15 percent discount on any future stay to compensate for the inconvenience. (This applies to our properties in Nashville or Los Angeles as well.) Thanks, again, for visiting us!

Gem in West Texas

  • 5 of 5

Who'd have known? Great home, comfortable, well appointed. 2 couples traveled for a wedding at the Gage hotel - the way the home is set up with master in the house and another casita with master was perfect! Rental was easy - owner does a GREAT job with information up front - show up and it's ready!
