Here are some local attractions: https://www.visitessexny.com/directory
My house is surrounded by farms and farmland and some exceptionally beautiful homes. It has delicious views of the Green Mountains in Vermont, across the lake. The home is 3 miles from downtown Essex, NY, a town on the National Register of Historic Places. Essex is on Lake Champlain and offers lakeside restaurants, marina, the Essex/Charlotte ferry to VT and the quaint homes and shops that look much as they probably did 200 years ago.
It is easy to access Burlington VT by the ferry--a 25 minute ride.
From the Essex website:
With an abundant shoreline, wilderness and pastoral farmland; magnificent outdoor activities (Champlain Area Trails hiking, cross country skiing, biking, sailing, etc.); locally grown, farm fresh food (Essex Farm, Full and By Farm, etc.); and a surprising abundance of cultural and artistic resources, Essex offers a unique and enriching lifestyle. And yet, despite it’s bucolic, rural setting, Essex enjoys convenient access to ferry, airport and train transport making it convenient and accessible to visitors throughout the Eastern United State and Canada.
Located in New York State’s Essex County along the Adirondack Coast of Lake Champlain, Essex, New York is only 113 miles north of Albany, NY; 29 miles south of Plattsburgh, NY; 86 miles south of Montreal, Canada; and 17 miles south-southwest of Burlington, VT.
The home is beautiful and the area has so much to offer!

We stayed for a week in June and loved it so much that we came back for 5 more days in August. We love the home, the property, and the area! Audie is wonderful - responsive, delightful, and a great host.
The home was beautiful, and we enjoyed the magnificent sunrises and views of the Green Mountains. We loved watching the horses and Guinea Hen, as did our dog. The kitchen appliances and equipment were great, and the host was gracious and accommodating. We look forward to another stay in this charming house.
The house was lovely and we felt like we had stepped back in time. Audrey was extremely helpful and accommodating to our needs. It was an ideal location for us to visit with family that lived nearby. We enjoyed our morning walks on the quiet road, watching the horses and the goats and feeding the guinea hens. We would definitely stay here again.
We had a weeklong stay at the porcupine farm in Essex. We had a great week. Some of us hiked, some visited Vermont, and we enjoyed our time together after being separated by Covid for over a year. I would recommend this location for any visit to Essex or Willsboro. Thank you Audrey for your hospitality while we were there!
Porcupine farm is a beautiful retreat on a very quiet rural lane just a few minutes from Lake Champlain. The vistas of the nearby mountains across the broad hayfields are sublime. The kitchen is well equipped and easy to use. The stone house dates from 1811 and just oozes charm. Audrey is a great communicator and made our stay a relaxing and memorable one.
The farmhouse was a perfect stay with family and pets while my boys were day campers in the area. The kitchen was modern and suited our cooking needs. The downstairs shower was nice for scrubbing them clean after days of play. I was able to do laundry in the basement. The location was perfect for day trips to Lake Placid, The Great escape, Rulphs for blueberry picking, and Plattsburgh for family fun. Audrey is a perfect host who accommodated us wonderfully. She even brought us fresh corn on the cob one night.
Lovely, charming, wonderful home in beautiful setting
We had such an amazing stay at Porcupine Farm! The house is beautiful, even better than the photos. The host was incredibly responsive and made us feel welcome before we even arrived with lots of little tips and details. Kitchen was fantastic to cook in with good quality everything and a lovely space, bedrooms were cozy and sunny with super comfortable beds, and you could feel the history of the old house around you while still having all the modern comforts! Lots of nice touches. Absolutely lovely setting in pretty farmland near hiking trails, and the animals were so much fun! My family of animal lovers adored the friendly goats and the hilarious guinea fowl. Would stay here again in a heartbeat!
Well-appointed 200yr old stone home with breathtaking mountain views.
My husband and I spent a beautiful fall weekend at this stunning home in the Adirondacks! The house itself is beautifully furnished with 2 beautiful bathrooms, one with a claw footed bath tub! We especially enjoyed the fire place in the living room and the gas stove in the kitchen, which made this beautiful home feel even more comfortable and cozy. Audrey was incredibly hospitable and provided lost of excellent information about the house and local area. We enjoyed the local treats that she left for us and the selection of puzzles that we used during our stay. We were also able to bring our dog with us, which made our weekend that much more enjoyable. Stunning views and sunrise! We can’t wait to go for our next visit!
I traveled with four friends so we were looking for four bedrooms and two bathrooms which this house has. In addition, the house is charming and comfortable for a group. Our first two days there were very hot, but the air conditioner in the living room and the fans made the house comfortable. We choose to cook meals in: the kitchen is spacious and completely equipped. The town of Essex is close-by and the ferry is a convenient, inexpensive and fun way to reach Vermont.
For people looking for local foods, the Hub on the Hill and Essex Farm are close. I was looking for a charging station for an EV and found that Essex Farm has several which were regularly available at no charge. Thank you, Essex Farm. One day I was sitting in my vehicle while it was charging with another EV owner. A farmer said it was the first time two vehicles were charging at the same time.
Audrey Sparre earns her Premium Host designation. She is accessible and helpful. During our stay rain and lightning storms moved into the area putting the dishwasher out of service. Audrey identified the issue and got it working. We have all agreed that it was delightful holiday.
Por-Q-Pine Farm was an amazing property and gets our highest recommendation. It was perfect for our family of six adults and three children including our furry family. So much room to move about, inside and outside. It was a mix of rustic decor with modern conveniences. Another plus was it was only 5 minutes to town and the ferry to Vermont. Once you got the "lay of the land", you found multiple places to visit nearby for vegetables, fruits, organic treats and groceries as well as nearby restaurants and cafes. Audrey was an amazing hostess, available 24 hours via text if needed and offered many suggestions for enjoying the farm and exploring around nearby towns. Would return in a heartbeat. Thank you Audrey for making our family vacation a memorable one!!!
Really enjoyed our stay and Audrey was very easy to communicate and coordinate with. Property and house are beautiful and well maintained. The goats and guinea fowl were adorable. Highly recommend!
Hard to say what I loved most about Porcupine Farm - the beautiful stone farmhouse and endlessly interesting decor, the views and setting, the sweet and entertaining animals, or chatting with the host as she took care of the goats. I loved it all! Our stay was relaxing and restorative, and I can't wait to return.
The house was beautiful and the property manager was great!
The experience for my family and I was wonderful! We do not have animals at our home so it was some getting used to with the dog hair. Otherwise, very clean and would definitely stay again! The house is beautiful!
The property is beautiful. The house was well-stocked with everything we needed. The location is very quiet and relaxing. About an hour from Lake Placid and Burlington, so we were able to easily do day trips. Audrey is a very responsive host and made us feel welcome.
Audie's home was perfect for our family. It is beautiful, well-appointed, nestled on a quiet street in a rural area, but close to everywhere we wanted to be. We woke to bird song and the babbling brook, enjoyed great hikes and dining nearby, and were continuously awed by the gorgeous views out of every window!
We enjoyed our stay here so much. The house is beautiful and is located in a very peaceful setting. It was close to the ferry to go into Vermont for day trips. Very spacious house. Audrey has it decorated so nice. Would not hesitate to stay here again.
This is an absolutely beautiful property and very comfortable with all that you need for a relaxing stay. We enjoyed cooking in the very well equipped kitchen and dining both indoors and out. We all enjoyed the peaceful surroundings and all that the area has to offer. We highly recommend a visit to Porcupine Farm!
If you like peace at the end of the day this is your rental. Close to alot of hiking and places to visit. Audrey was very helpful and pet friendly. The home was excellent in size and facilities for our family. We picked a very hot week which without a/c was alittle tough. We really enjoyed Lake Placid and the ferry to Vermont.
This was our second visit to Porcupine Farm. The house and property are breathtaking. It’s the perfect setting if you’re are looking to get away and unplug. The town of Essex is quaint and there is wonderful hiking and fishing nearby. Audrey’s property has a stream, lots of wildlife and her adorable goats. We made wonderful memories and hope to return again!
