Vintage Beachfront Studio Apartment Right On Charley Young Beach

Bedrooms 1
Property type studio
Minimum Stay 3 nights

About the property

Vintage studio apartment overlooking the beach. Perfectly accommodates 2.

Say Aloha to this beautiful oceanfront property and charming 2nd floor studio perched on a bluff overlooking Charley Young Beach. An idyllic subtropical paradise for many but for some who prefer accommodations with a more modern twist, we ask that before you book, please read our listing description in its entirety so you can be sure that what we offer matches up with what will make you happy and comfortable during your stay on Maui.

We are direct oceanfront and situated in an old neighborhood with a mixed demographic and very local feel. The beach house has a rustic, weathered, vintage vibe truly remnant of "Old Hawaii". My husband and I live in the main house on the ground floor, the studio upstairs is a fully separate unit with it's own private entrance in back of the building.

The studio interior is beautifully decorated with heirloom-style bistro table and chairs, a relaxed seating area with couch & hand-painted coffee table, a comfortable Queen sized bed with very nice linens, a fully-equipped kitchen and a private bath with fluffy bath and beach towels.

Perfectly accommodates 2 guests but can sleep up to 3 using the couch that folds out into a full bed.

A beautiful sandy beach and calm blue ocean is a 30 second walk from the apartment, and a spacious grassy oceanfront area in front of the main house with a hammock hanging in-between the coconut trees is available to all our property tenants and vacation rental guests. The sunsets are always eventful, and in the winter season Humpback Whales can be spotted jumping and tail slapping. Check out our video of the front yard and beach access!

The studio also has lots of windows and a fantastic ocean view! And it now has a brand new air conditioning system to keep you cool and comfortable but it's also very pleasant if you want to turn it off, open all the windows to let in the tropical trade winds, scent of the ocean and sound of the waves. Other amenities include WI-FI and a flat screen T.V., 2 beach chairs and umbrella.

The Neighborhood

Charley Young Beach is a public beach park in a residential neighborhood. It is well known for it's gentle surf and perfect for swimming, snorkeling, stand up paddle, fishing, and there's miles of sandy beach to walk in either direction.

The studio faces the ocean but also runs adjacent to the street below, right next to the entrance of the beach park which can get energetic from visitors, bicycles, mopeds and vehicles coming and going to the beach. So factor in a bit of noise, if beach activity is what you are after, the location just doesn’t get any better than this, vacationing on the southern coast of Maui, you’ll feel removed from the ordinary and yet have complete access to all the "action", the center of bustling Kihei town. Most everything is within walking distance to the beach house- grocery stores, farmers markets, coffee shops, cafes, restaurants and fine dining, shopping, entertainment, and all the accoutrements you can think of to keep happy and comfortable during your stay.

A Few More Highlights & Services

is called Classic Beachfront Studio Apartment Right On Charley Young Beach,

Listing #781623. The floor plan of this studio is almost identical to this one but has more panoramic ocean views throughout and is set back further from the road so it offers a bit more peace & quiet from all the beach park clamor.

Other Things To Note

Remember that Hawaii is located in the sub tropics where plants, birds and insects are all a part of a thriving natural environment. Please be assured that we go through great lengths to clean and keep the studio bug free. Still, you may see an occasional critter. If you stay with us, you can help by emptying your trash everyday and not leaving any food out.

E Komo Mai! Welcome! It is our hope that our guests will also share appreciation for the studio's vintage charm and the incredible uniqueness of the property in it's magnificent, natural, beachfront surroundings. As many of our previous guests can attest, there is something really special about this place, it’s not your typical condo. To stay here is to have a very real, very local experience.

About Derrick & Arlene Salomon

Family owned, my husband Derrick was born and raised on Maui in this very house. He is a Real Estate Agent, an amazing Chef and has been in the hospitality business for many years, he loves people and really understands this business from the heart. To everyone who knows him, he is the 'prince of Aloha'.

I have lived on Maui for 30 years and am a mother, artist, Arborist, Massage Therapist and Pilates teacher.

We both love to hike & botanize, cook & entertain, farm & garden, and watch T.V. in each others arms.

Derrick & Arlene Salomon purchased this studio in 1940

Why Derrick & Arlene Salomon chose Kihei

This is the original Charley Young Beach House.

The property has been in the family for generations and is situated at the entrance to one of the best beach parks on Maui, Charley Young Beach, which is named after my husbands grandfather, Charley Young, who came to Hawai'i in 1932 as a military reporter to cover the infamous Massie Trial. Settling on Maui, he purchased this oceanfront parcel and built a house for himself and his wife, Betty, and became a well known public figure and reporter for the Maui News and Honolulu Star-Bulletin in the 1940’s and 50’s. The house still stands today, relatively unchanged with all of it’s ‘Old Hawai’i’ charm, telling generations of family history.

What makes this studio unique

We offer simple, authentic accommodations next to a busy beach park. This is the place to stay if you prefer to travel like a human rather than a tourist.

Amazing location and delightful hospitality

  • 5 of 5

We spent 4 lovely days at this place and had a great time. The apartment is clean and well appointed and super convenient to the beach and many other things in Kihei. We (2 adults and a kid) were very comfortable. But even better than the apartment was the warm welcome we received from Arlene and Derrick with whom we shared meals, games and sunsets. We felt like we made new friends and had that great experience while traveling, when you get a good feeling about what life is like living and working in that place. We hope to return soon. Thanks for a great vacation!

Misleading and disappointing

  • 2 of 5

I have stayed at a lot of VRBO properties and this one was disappointing for what I was expecting according to their description and pictures. This is an ocean VIEW property which is different than ocean front. The view from this apartment is mostly the roof of the owners home. You can see the ocean but if you're hoping to potentially see whales or turtles from your room then bring your binoculars. It is also not air-conditioned in which I was perfectly fine with except that you can't leave the windows open at night due to the street noise that is directly below the window. It is indeed located DIRECTLY above/beside the very busy entrance to Charley Young Beach therefore it is very noisy from 5 a.m. (garbage truck beeping) to midnight. Even with the windows closed, there is a lot of street noise. Perhaps their adjacent apartment is quieter but view would not be any better. TINY deck for standing only. If you sat you wouldn't see ocean anyway.

The owners view from where they live directly below would be amazing and that is where the pictures of the hammock are taken. You are free to use the hammock but I wasn't comfortable being in their front yard. It also would have been helpful to have beach chairs to take to beach. I didn't feel like they would want sand in the only 2 beach towels brought into the apartment. There are also very, very few amenities. No microwave. No paper towels. Only 1.5 rolls of toilet paper, 1/2 a small box of tissues. No kitchen washcloth. Only one dish towel and only one washcloth. There are also teeny, teeny, tiny bugs that you see occasionally running across the counter tops in kitchen and bathroom. I am not sure if that is common or just this particular vintage apartment. Many of these things can be improved except for the noise and view.

I felt we would have been better off staying at a hotel. The bed was the best part. The sheets were very quality and bed was soft. Depending on what time of year you go, you aren't going to see the sunset either. You will have to walk to an opening in the trees. Also, couldn't keep

counters clean because no washcloths and then used the one wash cloth that was meant for bathroom to wipe the counters. They were always dirty due to wind coming through windows even when shut because of their age and louver type). I love VRBO's but definitely NOT this one.

Owner's Response: We strive to make sure that every guest feels welcome on the property and is very comfortable in the apartment so in response to this review we stocked the bathroom with more toilet paper and the kitchen with more paper towels. And in all fairness to ourselves and our prospective guests I might add that we have over 87 positive, joyful 4 & 5 star reviews (here on VRBO as well as one other popular vacation rental platform that we use) boasting of the view, the beach, the property and the hammock, the apartment decor, the hospitality and on and on. Our listing description is very transparent, it’s detailed in all honesty, if it’s read through in it’s entirety there is nothing misleading; we offer simple, authentic accommodations next to a busy beach park. It all depends on what you are looking for, this place is best suited to those who interact with gratitude in the natural world and who value the island spirit of Aloha more than a long list of amenities offered by your average condo complex. There is no shortage of condo's in Hawaii but our place happens to be one of a kind. If your interest is peaked by our lovely photographs, please read all of our gracious reviews and read the listing description in it's entirety so you can make an informed choice. Mahalo nui loa.

Amazing and hate to leave, love the ocean so close it has been an amazing journey on this island. First time, not as much to see and do as Kauai where we are headed but good place to rest and take in the beauty.thanks for offering your home and all the extras and the nice clean island flare.

Ideal location

  • 5 of 5

We loved the Vintage Beachfront Studio. The owners were wonderful and full of knowledge about the area. You can lay in bed and look at the ocean and the whales breaching. We could walk everywhere and Charley Young beach was two seconds away from the apartment and it is a great swimming and walking beach. The little kitchen had everything we needed and we had tons of nice towels for the bathroom and beach.
