We loved our stay at Ted's oceanfront home in Matapalo in CR. Listen to ocean waves, howler monkeys, macaws. Caretakers Chillia and Everitt live in the house behind the one pictured. The Jungle House is behind their house along the driveway and would be great if you had a second couple or teenagers. We had Chillia cook for us 4 days --her food is amazing and worth the $18 per person per meal. And we had leftovers! Everitt took us on a waterfall hike and frequently pointed out sloths (sleepy bears, he calls them), monkeys and other sights. The waterfalls he took us to reviled King Waterfall and Corcovada which I'd been to before. Back Wash Bay is a 7 min walk away and best for swimming. We arrived at night and could NOT find the house without Everitt driving to meet us near Matapalo Lodge. We got so lost in the dark. Highly recommend you arrive in daytime or pay Everitt to pick you up from Puerto Jimenez. Unless you plan to explore beyond Matapalo, don't bother renting a car, just pay Everitt to pick you up and drive you back when you leave. It's much cheaper than car rental. The roads are not roads, but rocky paths people drive through and two rivers you drive THROUGH so you need 4 wheel drive and a strong constitution. His waterfall hike was the highlight of our trip and took about 4 hours. We swam in 3 waterfalls! And hiked and saw leaf cutter ants, so many monkeys and animals. He knows all the good places. Tip him well when you leave. Inside the house, the beds are super comfy (and I am picky). The kitchen is well stocked with ample tupperware, stainless pans and many utensils and spices. The oven does not work, but we managed with stove and a BLENDER for smoothies! Relaxing, peaceful, natural. Not a place for spring breakers as only 1 bar a long drive away, Marina's. Surfer paradise, nature lover paradise and well worth the cost. We spoke with others that stayed at nearby houses and they did not have it was good without Chillia and Everitt, the comfy beds and lush landscape. Pura Vida!
