About Nicky Lankester
We are originally from the UK but currently live in Tanzania. Felix is a wildlife vet and Nicky a freelance documentary film-maker. We have three kids….all boys with lots of energy so Cornwall is the ideal place for them! We try to come back to the UK every summer to see friends and family so Merlins Cottage is our base when we are there.
Nicky Lankester purchased this House in 2013
Why Nicky Lankester chose Tintagel
Merlins Cottage is an ideal home for us when we are in the UK. For a family there is always stuff to do nearby from surfing at Trebarwith Strand, sailing in Rock, cycling on Bodmin Moor to strolling along the SW Coast Path. But even on days when none of us feel like moving, relaxing at home while the kids play in the garden is our idea of a perfect summer! Cornwall offers us something so incredibly different from Africa and yet in ways it is also quite similar. In both places our children are permanently active and outdoors…I think the only thing that changes is maybe the clothing!
What makes this House unique
There is nothing quite like waking up and being able to see the sea from your bed! With lovely views across National Trust farmland, you can happily spend the morning sipping tea, watching the sheep grazing while gently planning what fun you are going to get up to in the day. The house, which was fully renovated in 2014, is situated along a very quiet, private farm track so you can very quickly feel wonderfully alone in the world and completely at peace. If someone is feeling energetic they can stroll over the fields to Tintagel to pick up fresh bread or have a coffee whilst others laze around the open plan house, enjoying the views from the sun room and the large garden.
100% refund if canceled at least 60 days before arrival date.
Great house in rural setting and well renovated
Very transparent and one feels as owner whilst tenented,,,Great!!
Only issue is as a couple renting total property and paying for six plus guests, only really catered for two ,toilet paper, dish washing liquid towels (which granted not normally supplied.
On that note we find the traditional ENGLISH experience of not providing Toelling ,let alone bed linen ,as part of rent!!!! I DI NOT know of most international visitors visitors ,travelling over 25 hours packing bathroom linen!

I have never stayed anywhere where the actual property and surroundings were BETTER than the photos but I have now!!! Rooms are bigger and better than they look in photos, there are 2 superb en suites and another bathroom with shower and a downstairs loo. Excellent facilities, generous amount of basic items provided. Very clean and comfortable (except sofa in children's snug but that was fine). Went the extra mile and provided a Christmas tree and lights - thank you. Wonderful area, brilliant for walking. We all loved our stay including the dogs!
40th at Merlin's cottage
We booked this getaway for my wife's birthday.
the cottage was exactly what we wanted, beautiful views and easy access to the coastal path.
We had a lively stay and would happily book again
Warm, comfortable and characterful house. Plenty of space to socialise or retreat to a quiet space. It worked perfectly for our family stay. The house was clean and the location was inspiring. We had fun just cooking and playing games. It’s in a convenient spot for the village amenities and culture. We were all really happy with it.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The property was just what we wanted. Excellent for 8 adults.
Area so interesting and loads to see and do.
We had beautiful weather which also helps.
A lovely house in a fabulous location.
We loved this place! Having booked it for a winter weekend break, I was not disappointed. The location was fabulous with wonderful sea views and easy access to the coast path. The house was beautifully presented and very clean, but it also provided all the comforts of home. We had relaxing evenings in front of the fire after blustery walks on the coast.
The kitchen was well equipped for self catering and there was enough space in the house for everyone to find their place to relax.
The bedrooms were all of a good size and three had wonderful sea views. We all had comfortable beds and lovely clean sheets.
I would not hesitate to recommend this place and will be very keen to come back myself. It would be an ideal summer holiday property, but, for us, provided a deeply comfortable and memorable winter stay.
You can walk to Trebarwith Strand surfing beach in 20mins along the SW coast path. For those wishing to get there by car it is a five minute drive. The beach is dog-friendly and at low tide is great for rock pooling.
Tintagel is just a short walk away across the fields. From there you visit the famous castle, a place inextricably linked with the legend of King Arthur. While you are at the castle you can explore Merlins Cave, an extraordinary 330ft long cave passing completely through Tintagel island. Tintagel is bursting with life and there are plenty of shops, bars and cafes to choose from.
For those wishing to go sailing / water skiing then Rock is ideal and only 25mins by car.
The nearest airport is Newquay, about 30mins drive.
Trebarwith Strand - 1 mile, Tintagel - 0.5 mile, Polzeath / Rock - 15miles / Wadebridge 20 miles.
