Soundfront 4BR 2BA; Sunday to Sunday rental;
Why Theresa Hajost chose Frisco
After decades of renting cottages on Hatteras Island, we knew what we liked and set about finding/creating a house with great common space, a little reading nook, great views that bring the outside in, a big kitchen and a spacious deck with lots of furniture. That is Swing Belly's Roost (we never found out the genesis of the name & so created a apocryphal pirate to fit the image -- you'll find him out front on the cottage sign). The cathedral great room with kitchen & island face the sound with a wall of windows. The loft is the ideal place to read with 2 chaise lounges, book cases, mini-fridge & great sound views of the pelicans & ospreys. We have a collection of local history and nature books and other books by local authors. You'll recognize lots of art from local galleries on our walls. The deck is large enough for everyone to have their own chair or lounger. & the whole cottage is nestled in a grove of live oak trees some of which are over 100 years old! The ramp out front winds through this same grove & is wonderful for wheeled luggage, wheeled coolers and older dogs. The sunsets are phenomenal whether you're on the deck or at the end of the boardwalk to the sound. We've yet to see the green flash, but some of our local friends have -- so we'll keep trying. Other favorite activities are sitting in the hot tub as the sun goes down while the lights of Hatteras Village come on to the south. There are no houses to our south for about 1/2 mile so SBR is extra private. Also star gazing is great and you can also see the beam from the Cape Hatteras lighthouse (north in Buxton) sweep across the sky. We love to cook; our kitchen is equipped with pretty much everything you need for prepare gourmet meals. If there's a kitchen gadget that you consider essential and we don't have -- let us know! We started a tradition of eating our steamed clams on the deck & throwing the clamshells into the trees -- you'll see our mini-midden if you look down
What makes this Cottage unique
The sound, the sound, the sound! There is so much to do on the sound: windsurfing, kiteboarding, kayaking, SUPing, clamming, crabbing and fishing. You can even anchor a small boat! The beach, the beach, the beach! Our cottage is in Frisco (south of Cape Hatteras) where the ocean is warmed by the Gulf Stream and gets warmer faster in the spring/summer and stays warmer later in the fall than the beaches north of the Cape. There are multiple beach access points close to our cottage, but our favorite is the ORV accessible National Seashore beach a few miles south near the Billy Mitchell Airport -- it is wide and flat and tucked in a curve that makes it perfect for families! It's great for boogie-boarding, beach volleyball, campfires and cookouts. There are also several additional National Seashore beach access points within a 10 minute drive where you can park and walk over the dunes via a boardwalk -- and some have bathrooms and showers to rinse off sandy feet. The seafood, the seafood, the seafood. Our favorite places are to buy seafood Are Buxton Seafood, Risky Business and Harbor House Seafood. History, history, history. From the iconic Cape Hatteras lighthouse to the numerous shipwrecks exposed and then re-covered by storms southern Hatteras Island has it all. The Graveyard of the Atlantic Museum has interesting exhibits and offers programs on the unique history & culture of the OBX. We've learned everything from the latest on the "Lost Colony" to how to make clam fritters from a renowned cook!

A lovely home on the sound side. Perfect for birding and enjoying the beach. Connor's grocery is not far away. Super clean with a well stocked kitchen. Remember to bring laundry and personal soap. We loved our stay!
House on one level was wonderful. I wish I had know ahead of time that the ramp was not accessible. But. I understand that the owner can't control storm damage or the amount of repairs needed due to storms. But, having a bad knee and hip made the house with a ramp more appealing. We survived anyway.
High tides at Swing belly's Roost.
Another interesting visit. This was our third visit and first experience with storm aftermath as well as a tropical depression and ocean over wash while we were there. The cottage was cozy and the views of the sound were spectacular nun the less.
My husband and I stayed here along with our two dogs. Theresa was a dream to work with and we found the perfect spot to relax for the week. I feel like we had the entire sound to ourselves. Our dogs loved the boardwalk to the sound and we enjoyed swimming and kayaking on the bay. There are no words for beauty we experienced each night sitting out on the deck or beach area watching the sun set. Truly magnificent!
The house has everything you need for the week, we only needed to bring food and towels. There is an outside shower to use so you don’t track in sand and just to clean up. The beach areas are close and we visited most of them.
We have been wishing to return for years and feel like we stumbled upon a gem when we located this home. Thanks again, Theresa!
Peaceful getaway to The Outer Banks
This was our first visit to The Outer Banks so we didn’t know exactly what to expect. We arrived about a week and a half after the area was hit with Hurricane Dorian and sustained damage. Despite experiencing several days of pretty significant gale winds from a tropical storm we had a fabulous time. The days that the winds didn’t allow for much beach time we were able to get out and enjoy tourist spots. The location of Swing Belly’s Roast is convenient for exploring up and down the islands. For the time we didn’t want to get out in the weather the house was comfortable to lounge and relax in. Having our own area to explore the sound was great, we seen lots of wildlife...deer, cranes, geese, several kinds of crabs...lots of different birds...it was awesome. Thanks for sharing your home away from home with us!
