About Keith & Laurie Bratton
Keith and Laurie Bratton, owners of Cottage on the Creek and the adjacent bed and breakfast property, have their family roots in the San Luis Valley, specifically Del Norte and Monte Vista. Grandparents homesteaded just up valley from The Cottage on the historic Million Ranch, so there are strong sentimental ties to South Fork and the surrounding area.
Keith & Laurie Bratton purchased this Cottage in 2016
Why Keith & Laurie Bratton chose South Fork
Coming back to the San Luis Valley after being away for over 30 years, we chose the South Fork area in general and the property in particular because of its beautiful location. At the time of purchase, there was an existing house and a few outbuildings on three riverside acres with everything in need of great attention. Repaired, remodeled and redecorated, we opened a beautiful bed and breakfast facility in 2001 and have happily hosted countless guests in the years since. The house featured here on VRBO and now known as the Cottage on the Creek was built in 2007 as a private home and converted to a vacation accommodation in 2016. Upscale and intimate, it is designed to comfortably host small parties only--one or two couples or perhaps a small family. Combined, the main inn and the Cottage on the Creek can accommodate up to 14 guests.
What makes this Cottage unique
We love to share with our guests the experience of waking up to the sun peeking over the cliffs, the freshness of the crisp, mountain air, and the wake-up calls of the birds on the river -- a perfect way to start the day. And, as the perfect ending, we recommend relaxing around the glowing embers of a dying fire and toasting up a few sweet s'mores. As darkness falls, the silent show in the night sky is not to be missed. The star gazing is, well . . . AMAZING!

Charming cottage with beautiful scenic backdrop
The owners were very responsive and accommodating. The cottage is beautiful and has everything you could possibly need during your stay. The land that the cottage sits on is breathtaking. We hope to come back again next year!
We're always happy to hear that our guests have enjoyed their time at the Cottage. We're sorry your time had to be cut short this trip but absolutely hope that we'll get to have you back again. Cheers to lots of snow and cheers to next year!
Lovely house in South Fork
This house sits just off Hwy 160 next to the South Fork of the Rio Grande River, less than a mile west of the intersection of 160 and 149 to Creede. It is part of Arbor House Inn Bed and Breakfast. The owners live next door and are delightful folks. House was immaculately clean. Master bed has views of the river. Kitchen had all you need to bake and cook, including sharp knives. Deck just off the kitchen faces the river. It also has a small fire pit off the deck. There is a very good Mexican restaurant just across the road. House also has a good washer and dryer set up next to the kitchen.
Thank you for your kind words and thank you for staying with us! We're always glad to have happy guests and, of course, we would love for you to come back again. Looking forward to seeing you for Ride the Rockies this summer!
Perfect Christmas getaway
We booked the cottage very last minute for a Christmas ski trip to Wolf Creek. The cottage was very clean and had all the amenities we needed. The deer visited every day. The views out of the back windows were amazing. The cottage is about 17 miles to Wolf Creek ski area. This VRBO was pleasantly exactly as advertised.
Long-term planning definitely has its place, but the last-minute, spur-of-the-moment, spontaneous getaways can often end up at the very top of the first page in our memory books. We hope this was the case for you. : ) Thanks for staying with us over Christmas and CHEERS to tons of "spontaneity" in your new year!
I found the Cabin to updated and furnished with everything you could want or need.
I would definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a quite and well located place to stay. Loved it there.
We appreciate your recommendation, and we thank you for booking with us. Please come again!
Property is spectacular! Views amazing! Surrounded by nature’s beauty!
Nature is very busy this time of year. Colors are coming on quickly! Certainly one of the best times of the year to be here on the river. You scheduled your stay very well! Thanks for staying with us. Hope to have you back again someday . . .
South Fork, Colorado, had its early beginnings as a stop on the stagecoach line and later developed into a community supporting the local mining and timber operations. Over the years, tourism has taken over for mining and timber, and the welcome mat is now rolled out to outdoor enthusiasts of all kinds.
In our warmer months, activities include hiking, biking, horseback riding, geocaching, wildlife viewing, rafting, ATVing, 4-wheeling, and fishing. Lots of fishing. The entire area is a fly-fisherman's paradise with 47 tributaries of the Rio Grande River--500 miles of streams and rivers, we're told, along with 13 beautiful lakes and reservoirs. Great golfing at 8500 feet is also available at the beautiful Rio Grande Club right here in South Fork. Live theatrical performances at the Creede Repertory Theatre along with top-notch musical concerts at Wildwood Sounds in Del Norte are also super, summer choices.
Day trips to surrounding area attractions might include the Great Sand Dunes National Park, Wheeler Geological Monument, Monte Vista Wildlife Refuge, Pagosa Hot Springs, or the Indian ruins at Mesa Verde National Park. Experience the mountains "up close and personal" on a scenic train ride on the Durango & Silverton or Cumbres & Toltec Narrow Gauge Railways.
South Fork hosts over 17 events and festivals throughout the year including the Tucker Ponds Fishing Derby, Logger Days, Burris & Sons Rodeo, Little Britches Rodeo, our home-town Fourth of July Celebration, Rhythms on the Rio Music Festival, and the Annual Mushroom Foray. Festivals in surrounding towns include Covered Wagon Days in Del Norte, Mining Days in Creede, the Annual Crane Festival and Sky Hi Stampede in Monte Vista.
Not to be left out, snow and cold enthusiasts have excellent wintertime activities to choose from, as well. Miles and miles of groomed trails are available in the area for snowmobile fans and cross-country skiers. And for downhill skiers and snowboarders, Wolf Creek Ski Area, known for the most snow in Colorado, is just 20 minutes up the pass. (And, by the way, a tip for winter guests: when snows are heavy and avalanches occur, the South Fork side of Wolf Creek Pass generally remains open, making a great day to enjoy the slopes with lots of powder and very few people!) Ice skating, ice fishing, sledding, tubing, and sleigh rides in the snow round out the numerous wintertime choices.
