Guestbook comments from the owner

Hello Jim and Marie,Our stay at your cabin was fantastic and we are certain to return. We searched and searched for the perfect place and yours stood out as the only one that had everything we were looking for: authentic log cabin nestled in the woods with a crackling fire and a hot tub. Being located so close to Bozeman was a real bonus. The web site looked great but we were impressed when we arrived to see it was even better than the pictures posted on VRBO. We loved the way you decorated and noticed your attention to the smallest of details and especially appreciated the bear theme! Baths were well stocked with high quality soaps and shampoos and the softened water made for a luxurious shower. The bedroom had such nice sheets and a very comfortable mattress; the kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed and there was a bookshelf with current brochures of any activity one could want from Tours of Yellowstone to skiing at Bridger Bowl.A flock of wild turkeys strutted past our window every morning and white tail deer were abundant. Best of all, it was incredibly quiet and the perfect place to relax!I had hoped to post these comments on VRBO but they don’t make it easy to navigate their web site. Please feel free to use any of this on your comment page.Thank you for your incredible hospitality.KC Denham, CWESouthwest Region ManagerColeccion Internacional del Vino2033 Hillside DriveNapa, California 94559Cell 707-738-6247Fax 707-265-9466

Loved Bear Creek Log Cabin

  • 5 of 5

My husband, 2 boys (excuse me, young men), and I stayed at the Bear Creek Log cabin at the end of August, 2016. We drove in to amazing Bozeman (the nicest people we have ever met – everyone, every time we have been there) to bring our youngest young man to start college at Montana State. We really enjoyed our time at the cabin. It was incredibly peaceful and quiet and still just a short drive from Bozeman. We had no problems with bats or rodents, but our sons probably would have enjoyed a good bat chase! That’s part of living in the woods, really, though I wouldn’t like to sleep with them either. We also observed the overgrown foliage going down to the creek, and set our youngest young man to the path with a machete, which he enjoyed (all boys love to play with machetes). Then my husband went down to the creek and did a little fly fishing (No luck - the fish are wild and wily.). The creek at the end of August is not running hard, but you can hear it from the cabin, which is nice, and you will be surprised at the size of the fish in the deeper pools. We also enjoyed daily visits from a flock of turkeys (hens) and saw a buck a few times that I affectionately named “Ghost” for his ability to come up the driveway and then completely disappear into thin air.

The cabin is indeed quirky with its sloped floor and no bathrooms upstairs, but we didn’t think it took away from the overall charm of the place (but I agree with a previous reviewer that the steep stairs might not be good for an elderly person). But a log cabin in the woods with an outside fire pit and a hot tub, how can you go wrong? Who wants to come to beautiful Montana and sit in a sterile hotel room in the city. Sprawling in the oversized chair in front of the wood stove with a glass of wine in the evenings was my idea of heaven. The washer and dryer were also great and much needed for a longer stay like ours. We had a little trouble at first with the wifi but got it worked out. Marie and Jim were very responsive and helpful in getting it fixed. The cell service was not totally “non-existent” … we could get it for an hour or two in the morning and sometimes late afternoon if we walked up the driveway, lol.

We will be back in Bozeman frequently and would definitely stay at Bear Creek Log Cabin again. The cabin and property are currently for sale though, so we hope whoever takes it over still rents it as a vacation home.

Quaint and adorable little cabin in the woods

  • 4 of 5

This cabin is very unique in it's features and a quiet place close to Bozeman and Yellowstone Park. It gets you away from the hustle and bustle of crowds and traffic.

That being said, there were a few issues. First of all, let me tell you, there was absolutely no evidence of bats or rodents. Part of the beauty of this cabin is that it is rustic in nature and a true log cabin. The only problem for us was that the top logs were recently sealed and left behind a terrible chemical smell. This lasted for about four days into our stay and made us nauseated and gave us headaches. (I'm highly allergic to chemical smells) There are fans provided and the windows do open, so we were able to have constant air flow, which helped tremendously.

On the VRBO site it listed the cabin as having air conditioning, which is particularly one reason why we chose this one instead of others. In July/August it is very hot in this part of the country during the daytime... it cooled down at night, so it wasn't terrible, just not what we were expecting. I was concerned for my elderly mother who wasn't used to the heat.

Both bedrooms are upstairs. Both bathrooms are downstairs. I must have overlooked that when I booked this cabin. It was awkward for an older person to manage the stairs, at night especially.

The wifi worked wonderfully. The cell phone service was non existent. Again, not necessarily a bad thing.

The hot tub was working great! It was just too hot to use it very much.

One of our plans was to go fishing on the property in the Bear Creek. The creek didn't have much water in it that we saw. Again, it was hot and dry this time of year. The land itself could use some tender loving care. A lot of growth and made the creek not accessible from the cabin. We saw a picnic table down by the creek but the weeds were so overgrown it was impossible to walk down to. You do however, hear the creek babbling in the distance, so there was water somewhere! We just couldn't find it.

It is probably a better place for the other seasons. Great area for a little cooking fire to make s'mores or hot dogs.

The owners, Jim and Marie were great! Communication was sufficient and they are very nice. It was very private and clean.

Thanks for sharing your cabin with us!

Unfortunate Poor Experience July 1 - 6, 2016

  • 1 of 5

We cannot recommend Bear Cabin based on our very poor experience. The bottom line is that our vacation time was cut short and disrupted extensively due to rodent and bat problems at the cabin that made it difficult to sleep or relax. It looks like this property would be a nice place to stay if it were effectively maintained, but our experience was that it is not being maintained well and there are significant problems with rodents and bats in the place. The foundation is settling extensively (and/or just originally done poorly) as there is a significant slant/tilt to the cabin that is somewhat amusing at first encounter, but a problem given that it introduces a lot of gaps and openings in the woodwork such that the cabin isn't sealed against rodents, bats and pests. The simple facts are that on our second night (July 2, 2016) a bat began flying all over the cabin and buzzing us once the sun was down and it made it impossible to eat or go to sleep. Cell phone coverage is spotty (mostly non existent) at the location and we were unable to get a response from Jim (who we were told to contact by the owner) until the next day. I ended up trapping and killing the bat myself that night after a few hours of battle. Jim suggested the doors may have been left open by prior guests but this was not the case with us. We had already been careful, but were especially careful about doors and windows after bat #1. A few nights later (July 6) another bat began flying around the kitchen and cabin during dinner, buzzing our heads. I was unable to catch this one after several hours and we ultimately bailed out late at night and had to search out a hotel. The owner (Marie) again asked us to contact Jim which I attempted several times during all this. Jim did not respond until the next day to report that he had found a bat in our former bedroom and disposed of bat #2. Based on the noises in the roof/ceiling and walls, and the poorly sealed exterior of the cabin, it sounded to us like the bats were nesting in the roof/ceiling and coming into the cabin through gaps from all the settling.

We also encountered rodent issues with mice droppings in various places including the kitchen (even after vacuuming droppings only to find fresh droppings the next day). Jim reported catching a mouse in one of the traps set out when we asked him to investigate the rodent problem also. Jim did attempt to do some sealing but this didn't seem to help (nesting noises). Buyer Beware.

Bear Creek Cabin Perfection

  • 5 of 5

This cabin was just perfect for our stay and only about 3 miles from Bozeman. With rippling water sounds from little Bear creek nearby and tall pines trees right next to the cabin it was everything I had hoped Montana would be! The beds were very comfortable, kitchen well-stocked, and the hot tub wonderful to use after long drives. It was very private and we had deer and turkey visit the yard. Owner was very helpful also. We would return for sure!

We had a great time

  • 5 of 5

This cabin is loaded with character and charm, the owners are friendly and attentive.

We felt it is the perfect distance out of town as to feel secluded without feeling isolated. We were visited by deer, wild turkey and an extremely friendly kitty.

Will definitely recommend this place and hope to stay here again.
