About the property

La Plata Mountains Bunkhouse - Cozy/Comfortable/Economical

BUNKHOUSE/CABIN: This little cabin is perfect for a couple or small close knit family traveling on a budget. It was originally a one room log structure build in 1989 for the owners of the main cabin for sleeping quarters for grand kids and other visitors. In 2015 I refinished it inside and out and added a bathroom, kitchenette and covered deck. It is uniquely handcrafted, comfortable, cozy and cute as a bugs ear. Although, it is close to the main cabin, the separate parking, entry, deck and grill are positioned in an effort to achieve privacy even when the main cabin is occupied. The main room has a full sized bed with new mattress, twin bunk beds and a living area. The kitchenette has granite counter top with drop in cook-top and compact oven. Every bit of space is utilized to provide the well equipped cooking utensils and food storage for those who enjoy good home cooked meals. The patio table and chairs on the outside deck offer a great place to dine and relax but if you prefer dining inside a drop leaf table and folding chairs can seat 4. The bathroom (toilet and shower) is new and well appointed.

LOCATION/SETTING: This property lies in the foothills of the La Plata Mountain Range just 5 miles of paved country road from Mancos, Colorado. It sets on 3 acres of pine, juniper and gambel's oak trees. At an elevation of 7820 feet the summer evenings are generally cool and daytime temperatures are mild. The mesa top of Mesa Verde NP marks the horizon of the evening sunsets. A 30 minute drives gets you to historic downtown Durango. This proximity offers scenic beauty and too many outdoor activities and attractions to list. Take some time to relax on the deck and enjoy the resident birds, deer and maybe even a sighting of fox, bobcat or coyote.

About Rollin M. Lunders

We moved to the mountains of Colorado in 1974, fell in love with all it has to offer and have made it our cherished home. Here we raised our two children who are amazing young adults now. Over the years we built our house, 2-story garage with guest room and barn and have treated the land with care. Skiing, hiking, gardening, raising our own beef, landscaping the property and enjoying our dog and cat keep life interesting. To that, we add traveling both afar and near with all the variety that is in the Four Corners.

Yes, we find time to pursue our careers. Rollin is a self-employed consulting geologist and Robin is an educator.

Rollin M. Lunders purchased this cabin in 2010

Why Rollin M. Lunders chose Mancos

We purchased the cabin in fall 2010 from our friend George and his family who used it as a vacation getaway. George and his wife Margaret built this log cabin at the same time we created our home so we had a lot in common and enjoyed seeing them when they or their family members came to get away from it all. Since buying the cabin we have been working hard and having fun getting it ready to be a vacation rental. Much refinishing and insulating to make it winter worthy. In 2015 we remodeled the one room bunkhouse and added a bathroom, kitchenette, and deck, turning it into a compact uniquely crafted 2nd cabin. We live just a short walk away and enjoy offering this comfortable vacation property for your next getaway into nature. We are located in beautiful Echo Basin by the entrance of the San Juan National Forest with the Echo Basin Loop Drive. We are a five-mile drive from Mancos, Colorado with nearby Mesa Verde National Park, Ute Mountain Tribal Park and so many other exciting and interesting destinations.

What makes this cabin unique

We love to relax on the shaded porch with a cool drink while watching the deer, listening to the birdsong and watching a gorgeous sunset. In the fall the aspen and Gambel oak trees in the area afford an amazing color show. Whether you are in the area for outdoor sports activities, sightseeing or just relaxing, the cabin is a great place to stay.

Quiet, cozy, clean & comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We loved this place! My wife and I stayed here for a short getaway from Denver. It's in a great location with just a walk up the road to the national forest, 10 minutes from Mesa Verde NP, and 30 minutes to Durango. We saw several deer and elk roaming the neighborhood. The cabin is very well taken care of, and the owner is super friendly and accommodating.

Serenity

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was absolutely perfect . I enjoyed not having a television or internet. It was a true getaway. The location was great and not too far from town. In the morning we would see a few deer feeding outside our door. Rollin was a great host. Upon arriving there were a couple of delicious cookies on the table . (how thoughtful!) .We went horseback riding just around the corner. That was so amazing, peaceful and beautiful. We are looking to come back again!

Peaceful Mountain Cabin

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was beautiful and clean! The location could not have been better. Very close to lots of mountain bike trails and great food in any direction. An absolutely perfect place to unwind after a day of fun. We spent lots of time enjoying the deck. Horseback riding within minutes of the cabin. The owner, Rollin, was great and made sure we had everything we needed. We’ll definitely be back.

Quiet, charming cabin

  • 5 of 5

Had a very pleasant, relaxing stay here following a backpack trip in early July.

We really enjoyed sitting on the porch for meals and other times watching wildlife and birds.

The owner stopped by a few times to check in on us, we appreciated that.

Everything was in working order, we were able to prepare simple meals with the grill, 2 burner cook-top, toaster-oven, and fridge.

The cabin is very well maintained.

We climbed a few mountains in the La Plata range while staying here.

Saw the fireworks in Mancos.

Would stay here again!
