Dolores House Rental Photos and Description

Spacious 4 bedroom home in the beautiful Dolores Valley.

This two-story, four bedroom home provides you with a comfortable and convenient location for all your fun in Southwest Colorado. Great outdoor sports and interesting destinations lie in all directions and when the day is done, come 'home' to relax in comfort. Sleeps 6 comfortably in each of three fully loaded bedrooms and then there are extra beds enough for 2 more and we can accommodate extra children that love to 'camp out'. Fully loaded kitchen, two bathrooms, an outdoor patio and a fully accessible balcony. The Pony Expresso coffee shop next door can get your caffein needs and breakfast burrito ready to go.

All four seasons are a wonderful time to visit the Southwestern United States. Spring weather can have a few storms but generally we have sunny days and the national parks are open, and the weather is beautiful for exploring. Summer days are for bike riding, hiking, boating, and adventures. Fall is a wonderful time in the Southwest region for your color watch - seeing the trees change into their glorious new wardrobe before winter. Hunters can have all the amenities and still be close to a multitude of good hunting spots. Wintertime equates to great skiing at either Purgatory (formerly known as the Durango Mountain Resort) or Telluride. Cross country ski almost anywhere when the snow is good. The Dolores River is literally 300 yards from your front door. Go skiing in Telluride or Durango, great mountain biking can be found at Boggy Draw (3 miles away) or Phil's World (12 miles away) just to name a few. Visit Mesa Verde or check out the Ute Mountain Tribal park to fulfill your archeological dreams. Truly there are too many things to do in the area to list them all.

About Roberta Henes

Steve is a true local, born and raised here and Robby is an 'almost local' having moved to the area when she was 5 years old. After working overseas for almost 15 years, Robby came home to take a break and met Steve who convinced her that life in Dolores was worth sticking around for! Steve currently continues his furniture restoration business in and amongst restoring old cars and improving on some mountain property. Robby is deeply involved in a seed company providing native grasses and wildflowers for reclamation. Pickle ball is the newest addition to their lives adding more exercise and fun. Beware if you stay very long we will try to recruit you.

Roberta Henes purchased this house in 1990

Why Roberta Henes chose Southwest

201 is one of the older homes in Dolores. In its day it was considered a luxurious home (although by todays standards it was very small) and built by a local doctor. Before Steve purchased the home in 1990, it was a day care center. With Steve's construction skills and artistic vision, the home has been updated and modernized including raising the roof and turning the head knocker second floor into a relaxing and spacious master bedroom. Influences from Mexico grace the kitchen and bathroom. Funky spaces that would make most people scratch their head have been converted into great storage or interesting architectural features. Robby and Steve live in an upstairs flat next door with a huge open air plan. We don't need the space of 201 and are always excited to share it with new people.

What makes this house unique

As you can probably see from the photo's this house makes you want to explore it. With interesting dormers and porches, it calls for a good book and cup of coffee, or supplies a haven after a long hike. It is a landmark in Dolores and if you have the good sense to visit in December, we normally have a sailboat out front decorated from head to toe in lights.

Guestbook comments from the owner

As is usual for the guests that visit here in Dolores, we enjoy meeting them and getting to know new friends. Agi and her family were no exception. Except they felt so comfortable to be around and interesting, we sort of wished we could be adopted into the family and join in the vacation fun. They left the house in amazing condition and will be welcomed back any time. Of course if we could shorten the distance from here to Denver we would - just for you! Although it might not have quite the same charm as it does being so far from all big cities.

Exceeded all expectations!

  • 5 of 5

In late September, my family (two sisters, my husband and I) planned a last minute trip to Mesa Verde and the Four Corners for early October. During our search for accommodations, the house in Dolores got our attention. Dolores is a lovely little town located at the gateway to many attractions in the four corners area. The 4-5 bedroom house was very roomy and comfortable. The older house has been lovingly renovated by the owners, and it retains the essence of an old home (large wood doors, arches, nooks, wood floors) with modern updates in the kitchen and bathrooms. Most everything in Dolores is within walking distance of the home. While Dolores is a small town, it has many amenities, the best being the local grocery store with its variety of offerings including fresh baked goods (try the turkey pot pie for dinner!), organic produce, and very friendly staff. Steve and Robbie are great hosts. They made sure that we had everything we needed, and shared their advice about things to see and experience in the area. We all felt very fortunate to have stayed in their home for our vacation. I highly recommend this property to anyone in search of a convenient base for visiting the Four Corners area.

Owner's Response: We love it when people get turned on to Dolores and the Southwest and all the treasures we have around here AND like their accommodations as well! Half the fun of having a vacation rental is meeting great new people! We enjoyed you and your gang mightily and still hope it works out to meet up with Carolyn in Florida in December. Also mighty glad that you could be enjoying life in Colorado but your homes were spared during Hurricane Matthew. You were great guests and we wish you all the best.

Owner's Response: LOVE IT, when our guests enjoy our home and feel comfortable so that they can enjoy their vacation. So Glad you enjoyed it. And very sorry we did not connect earlier in your stay to make sure everything was okay. We will address the sticky/tough lock on the front door so that future guests don't get in trouble. Thanks

Everything we were wanting and more!

  • 5 of 5

The property is easily accessible and conveniently located in this beautiful little town. Everything that we could have thought of was available in town. Cortez is a little bigger city and only 15 minutes away if we needed it.

The house was very nice and well decorated. We felt very safe and everyone of our 6 person group had plenty of space to relax. Even our almost two year old felt immediately at home. Every amenity that was advertised was provided.

Robby and Steve were very gracious hosts and went out of their way to make the stay as enjoyable as possible. I could not have asked for a better place or owners than 'Fort Dolores' offered us for our Rocky Mountain Getaway!

Owner's Response: Beau and Family. We wish that we could have managed the hunting conditions as well - but as you said - that is why it is called 'hunting'. We enjoyed meeting you all and are glad the home lived up to everyone's expectations. That makes us feel good. Best!

Hello there,

It is difficult to describe the property and our landlords. Both were unusual and welcoming! The four of us stayed at the Henes/Hill house in Dolores for 6 days!

The house is built in a charming manner with lots of nooks and crannies to hide in. It is strikingly different from the outside. There is no other like it in the village. Two spacious and light floors. A lovely kitchen and a cute breakfast nook near the kitchen. The living room welcomed you with soft leather furniture, had a TV and many DVDS to choose from.

We had our separate bedrooms and even one room to spare. Most of the rooms had their own deck and an extra large one downstairs facing the street. The furnishings were comfortable and the beds lovely. The whole house is airy and seems to welcome you with open arms. The bathrooms were modern and had everything we needed. Our landlords were charming and didn't intrude. As a matter of fact they were difficult to find. :-)) We would certainly tell if anyone asks that they should stay there.

We wish Dolores were not 8 hours driving from our home. We would certainly stay there again. And perhaps we will. We can in all good conscience say that we had absolutely no problems with anything. Oh, and I forget; the house is near a lovely creek and faces a Coffee shop! Isn't that heaven! Dolores is quiet, friendly and near to several natural wonders such as Mesa Verde et all....

I hope that this helps!

The Molnar Family from Denver.

Lovely home with everything we needed !!

Robbie and Steve were a pleasure dealing with. I needed a package delivered to us on our stay. Robbie was so great in helping me out to ensure we got the package. Thanks again for that Robbie. I just love staying there it truly is a home away from home. I look forward to going back.

Located in the heart of the Ancient World of the Anasazi, there is a wealth of archeological adventure in the area. You can visit three different National Parks, each as a days adventure. Mesa Verde, Canyonlands and Arches National Park. Hiking, biking and fishing are the reasons locals live here! National forests and BLM lands on many sides guarantee adventures in the outdoors. Come to Dolores if you want to experience the great outdoors and its many glories and then retire to your comfortable 'home' for the night!

If hiking makes you happy, there are a few good trails right out of Dolores and then innumerable hikes in all directions, take your pick: alpine lakes, geyser hot springs, 14,000’ peaks, indian ruins, desert wildflower hikes, aspen tree adventures, ghost towns, the variety is limitless.

Our region is renowned for archaeological ruins. Mesa Verde National Park enjoys the greatest fame, however, you can go exploring on your own at Canyon of the Ancients or Cedar Mesa (Utah). The Ute Mountain Ute tribe has tours guided by members of their tribe on reservation land, taking you to places not seen by many.

Mountain bikers have many options to choose from including Phil’s World and Boggy Draw close by and Alien Run in Aztec, New Mexico. Skiers will find Purgatory ski area in Durango or Telluride ski area meet all their ski expectations (given that we get snow) and cross country skiers won’t be disappointed either. Chicken Creek is one of our favorite locations.

Sport Fishermen will find the Dolores River a wonderful challenge and many other tributaries and high mountain streams offer trout to the intrepid.

There are so many more opportunities for adventure and exploration in the region. Moab, Utah, Canyonlands National Park, Arches National Park, Canyon of the Ancients, Durango – Silverton narrow gauge Railroad, Monument Valley and more.

We have assembled a pretty good library of brochures and articles on many of the attractions of the area so you can plan your vacation from your home away from home. As you may have noticed, you come here for nature and adventure and sport. We are not a shopping mecca – although there is some world class American Indian Jewelry in the region.
