About Katherine Shegrud
We have always been St Thomas enthusiasts! We moved from Northern Virginia where we had lived for 15 years, and had lived in the Bay Area of California and Puerto Rico previously. We wanted a peaceful, private and ocean view setting for our villa, and Joie De Vivre is perfect for indoor and outdoor living that provides us with the exceptionally serene and exquisite ocean viewing tapestry. We completed construction and finishing of Villa Joie De Vivre in 2014, and are the original owners.
Katherine Shegrud purchased this Villa in 2014
Why Katherine Shegrud chose Estate Peterborg
You will wake in the morning and bring your coffee to our grand lanai to join the sweet air from the fresh ocean breeze, Caribbean warmth and the many types of birds flying or singing within view. The usual sounds from you and your party will be silence at the natural beauty and everchanging seascape, and laughter as you recount yesterday's events and plan to do more today. We looked at lots all over St. Thomas and on both sides of the Peterborg peninsula, and fell in love with the ocean and down island view, fresh ocean breeze and tranquil setting of Joie De Vivre. We could not have picked a better place to live or to vacation. We also enjoy swimming, paddle boarding or just talking while using noodles in the calm, clear ocean water. Magen's Bay is just a one mile drive from our villa. The crystal clear blue water is amazing, and most times we are in the water, brown pelicans dive nearby to catch little minnows and we usually see a leatherback turtle or two swimming just 20-30 feet away.
What makes this Villa unique
Every day we are home we feel caressed by the quiet and peaceful setting -- gentle waves washing up against the coastline below us, lush tropical plants and palms that provide bountiful color and sway in the breeze, and a fabulous 'one in a million' down island view -- all soothing to the soul. We rest and play here like no other place on earth. The fresh, soft air that flows to us from the ocean will help us live until we are 110, it is virgin air! We also like the feel and friendliness of a small community and Sydney's Fancy and St. Thomas are just that. We are just a few miles drive to the ferries that go to St. John, the BVIs and to Water Island, all amazing islands and great day trips. We have three great kids and three grandkids, and the trips they and their families take down here are wonderful and memory makers. They can't wait for their next trip to ' their villa' :-)

Beautiful Villa and Stunning Views... with great customer service
Such a beautiful property!!!! Our trip would not have been as special if we stayed anywhere other than "Villa Joie de Vivre".
The villa was perfect. It was definitely private, quiet, and serene. We only saw one or two neighbors driving by when traveling to or from the villa.
The villa sits mountainside/cliffside so be prepared for a drive up (it's worth it). After the first/second time you should know your way without an issue (or use GPS to get near Magen's Bay).
As soon as you turn onto the driveway you are met with stunning views of the ocean, landscaping, and the island across the way. Once you enter the home everything is in its place. The décor is appropriate for an island villa and you immediately notice the upkeep. Each room was comfortable and accommodating. The bedrooms and bathrooms are spacious. Everyone in our party remarked on the comfortable beds. Though each room has an air conditioner, try sleeping with the windows open to hear the waves. Each room has a gorgeous view of the ocean and opposing island. The fourth room took a little getting used to because you could hear one of the systems (maybe water heater or gas) turn on but once you're aware you don't notice as much.
The veranda allows you to enjoy the waves anytime of the day. And the pool was perfect for a quick dip and making a splash.
Though our trip started a little bumpy, Ms. Katherine was there to save the day by honoring our stay request on a short notice. She openly communicated with us before, during, and after the trip to make sure all of our needs were met. While at the villa, the guest services manager was extremely accommodating and ensured we enjoyed our stay. She briefed us on all the events taking place during our stay and encouraged us to see Saint Thomas, to get out and explore. On the way to the property she gave us a brief tour (pointing out places to eat and places to visit) and when we had any question she was there with an answer.
Needless to say, we enjoyed out time at the villa and look forward to staying here for any future Saint Thomas trips.
Family with grown kids
We have rented many villas on the island. Really loved this house!! It is high end and all bedrooms are in the main house. The balcony is awesome!!! We spent a lot of time relaxing on the balcony after beach days! There is a generator which kicks in automatically in case of a power outage which happens a lot on St Thomas. Loved hearing the waves hit the rocks below. the owner called to check in midweek which was nice. We always rent homes that are owner managed. I am sure we will rent this villa again in the future.
Stunning Views! Spacious! Clean! Exceptionally Equipped!
Pamela, the property manager, was a joy to work with! Met us at airport, helped us acquire our rental car and got us settled in quickly! The house is outstanding! Very spacious! You will also never want to leave the outdoor areas! Their view will never get old! The pool was the perfect spot for the kids to keep playing while the adults could enjoy the beauty! Beds were comfortable! Kitchen had everything we needed! Also, the laundry room was well equipped with towels and chairs for the beach! After adventuring all day around the island, it was so wonderful to come back to such a clean home, take a nice hot shower, and then relax on the balcony! This home is very close to Magen’s Bay Beach, one of the most beautiful beaches in my opinion! They’ve done such a wonderful job rebuilding after the hurricanes there! You won’t be disappointed in this house for your next family vacation.
Paradise Found At Villa Joie de Vivre! A 6 Star Property!
Our family of six just returned from 7 nights at Joie de Vivre. Our trip was planned for Thanksgiving, but after two historically unprecedented hurricanes the owners were very understanding- advising and accommodating a delay to ensure the best possible experience for our family trip.
The villa's local manager was quite helpful with pre-trip planning, and was also a well-connected asset throughout our stay. She gladly ensured all our questions, wants and needs were attended to.
Having lived on-island, and since then, stayed at or visited many of its most exclusive properties, I can tell you these glowing reviews are correct.
As others have said, the location is perfect: Set within the very best area of St Thomas at its most prestigious address. Joie de Vivre is a spectacle of layout and design, beautifully decorated both inside and out. The home is close enough to anything, yet far enough from the bustle to give you utmost peace and quiet, security, and privacy.
The views and exposure are truly beyond words or capture. Joie de Vivre's positioning, architecture and decor act as a seamless tribute to the surrounding beauty that so typically defies the hand of man.
As our days passed, this feeling didn't fade, as it often does, but rather; the sense of wonder and fascination grew. Regardless of how late I'd stay up, each unique sunrise lured me from my comfy bed, guiding me with coffee-in-hand onto the grand lanai or exploring the varied perspectives of so many different perches. The morning's light revived me as it unveiled St John and played upon the vast spread of islands up through Drake's Passage washing over me with its unmatched dynamic splendor.
I often alternated from feeling god-like upon this magical perch, to a more peaceful state of humbled appreciation gained in witness of this continual unwrapping of such creation gifted in each new moment. Joie de Vivre is the perfect easel to capture this work of art; where those lucky and wise enough to engage and embrace all their senses, are not mere spectators, but are a part of it- within it!
Even if it were to mean delaying your trip for an entire year to meet your villa budget-do it-For you will not be let down!
Thank You to Katherine and Steven for having us. It is clear that you truly care for your guest's well-being, and thus forged a sense that this was more than a business transaction, but rather you acted upon a devotion.
Until next time- Still drunk on paradise!
We thoroughly enjoyed working with the Nicholas family in every phase of the inquiry, booking and during their vacation time at our villa. They are model guests that appreciate the natural beauty of St Thomas and place their values at the very top - quality family time. We are so fortunate to have established this relationship and welcome the Nicholas family back anytime. Quite unexpectedly to us, they 'spic and span' cleaned our entire home prior to checking out. Thank you to both of you, and for your service to our country and being the stand-up family that you all are. All the Best, Steve & Katherine
A Week We'll Never Forget!
When we arrived in St. Thomas, we were greeted at the airport by Keyanna, the property manager. She escorted us from the airport to the home, showing us how everything in the home worked. She then made a great suggestion of a local restaurant for dinner and showed us where the grocery stores were located. The home was as beautiful as the photos and the views were out of this world. It was well stocked with essentials in the kitchen as well as pool and beach gear. Our family of eight settled right in, ready to enjoy a wonderful week in paradise.
As we traveled to St. Thomas, we knew there was a small chance that a tropical storm which was forming in the Atlantic might approach near the island. Both prior to our visit and during our first few days on St. Thomas, we were in communication with the owners, Steve and Katherine. We started communicating several times a day as the storm approached, and Steve and Katherine's first priority was our safety. The onsite staff was outstanding, preparing us and the home for the upcoming storm. The home is solidly built and we felt that our family would be safe riding out Hurricane Irma there. Irma hit on Wednesday morning. At 6:00AM the island cut off all electricity, but luckily the home has a generator with over 200 gallons of fuel. The entire time we had power, air conditioning and water. We sheltered in the downstairs bathrooms during the peak of the storm. Irma hit as a category 5 hurricane with sustained winds of 185 mph and gusts of over 200 mph. When we exited the bathrooms after about 5 hours, the home was totally intact with only minor water leakage around the windows and doors. Generator still running, power, air conditioning and water all working. Outside, the power of the storm was evident, power lines were down, trees were toppled and older homes were heavily damaged. The next day, the gardener, Napolean, was at the home with a crew to assess damage and clean up the yard.
Our intention was never to go into harm's way, but at every turn the storm took the least probable route and ended up hitting the island.
Steve and Katherine have a lovely home and as it turns out, a very safe home. We look forward to returning again for a more relaxing week.
Fabulous home and beautiful view!
The pictures of this home and view tell the true story! The home is very clean, stocked with essentials and well kept. You can tell the owners take great pride in sharing their home not only from this but from their timely, courteous and helpful correspondence start to finish. Their house manager was just as accommodating. Both made for easy planning and a more enjoyable stay. We found the location of this home to be perfect for exploring the island. The best part was being so close to Magens Bay. But it is also just a short drive to grocery stores, Red Hook and mid-island restaurants. We can't wait to stay at Villa Joie De Vivre again!
Spectacular Atlantic Ocean and down island views. You can see and hear the ocean and the waves breaking onto our property coastline just below our villa. Multiple bird viewings anytime of day - brown pelicans fly past just a few yards away, small native green/yellow parrots the same, hummingbirds visit our firecracker, hibiscus and other flowers near pool. Famous Magen's Bay Beach Park is only a one mile drive from our villa. Zip line 3 miles away.
