Our spacious ocean side outdoor decks and seating, the tiki bar and pool entertaining area around our large in-ground pool and full sized sandy volley ball court, coupled with our large lot and semi-ocean front location, makes this one of the nicest homes in Duck.

About Mike and Mary Hayward

We have been coming to Duck for almost two decades to vacation. Each time we were here we would fantasize about owning a little something of this wonderful island to enjoy whenever we could. Finally, just this year we took the plunge and now own OBX BOX. We love its beach and town of Duck location. It is just the right size for our family gatherings and is our special haven to escape to when the pressures of real life get to us and we need ocean beach time to regroup. We hope you too will find that peace of mind and sense of rejuvenation that we get each time we come to OBX BOX. We look forward to sharing it with you and your family. We hope you will select OBX BOX as your beach vacation get away and that you will make great beach memories to cherish in the years to come.

Mike and Mary Hayward purchased this house in 2016

Why Mike and Mary Hayward chose Duck

OBX BOX is located semi-ocean front on one of the most beautiful east coast beaches in the U.S. It has the best view and is 2 minutes to the beach, right across the beach access walkway for year round beach front enjoyment! Spectacular sunrises and moon rises greet you daily! We have had so much fun making OBX BOX a comfortable place to relax with many details we enjoy for our own comfort and down time. We enjoy our morning coffee on OBX BOX's ocean views deck and our lovely sunsets from our top side deck. We love the pelican drive-bys and enjoy the wildlife (deer! foxes!) that scamper near by.

OBX BOX is located 10 minutes by foot to the town of Duck, which is a very walkable, bike and dog-friendly quaint coastal village with super friendly folk and wonderful shopping, dining and many fun things to do for you and the family. You can rent kayaks, canoes, bikes, tandem bikes, etc., to enjoy the walking/biking trail and many water activities Duck has to offer. Take yoga classes on the Duck green in the summer or in the winter practice yoga at Village Yoga. Watch family friendly free movies on Friday evenings on the town green in the summer, stroll the sound-side boardwalk for ice cream, Duck Doughnuts, and watch the ospreys nesting. We love it here and come all the time.

What makes this house unique

-Your own private pool large (12x30) and the beach just a short walk away

-Lovely home interiors with comfy sleeping, modern kitchen and little places to retreat

-Great shopping, restaurants and boardwalk within walking distance

-Outer Banks special sights:

There are four great lighthouses that are worth seeing - the Currituck Beach ighthouse in Corolla, Bodie Island Lighthouse, Cape Hatteras Lighthouse and Ocracoke Island Lighthouse which you have to take a ferry to get to the island. The Whalehead Club and Wildlife Educational Center are interesting. The site of the first airplane flight by the Wright brothers is a National Park in Kill Devil Hills. The park displays replicas of the original Wright Flyer. Jockey's Ridge, the tallest sand dune on the east coast is in Nags Head. Climbing to the top to view the sunset over the sound is memorable. Keep driving south on Rt. 12 and you reach Cape Hatteras National Seashore and Oregon Inlet. A visit to the Manteo Waterfront and the Elizabethan Gardens is a great trip. Don't forget Jeannette's Pier in south Nags Head for fishing and aquariums.

Notes:
Fall and winter bring their own charm to the Outer Banks. The big crowds are gone and long walks on the beach often have one set of foot prints - yours. September and October are warm and golden; the sea oats are full and heavy, waving over the dunes. The traffic is gone, so a trip to watch the fish come in or just to go out to dinner is a pleasure - no waiting. If fishing is your passion, the piers and the surf off of our beach have produced fantastic catches. Golf is another activity that is more pleasurable during warm days in fall and winter. There are many courses to choose from and again - no waiting. Most of the shops have 'end of the season' sales and the restaurants are happy to see you without reservations. Shells on the beach appear more plentiful. Many people - including the owners - prefer this slower season.

Moments of Perfection

  • 5 of 5

At the risk of alerting all to this gem, this house is perfection. It is 30 second from the beach, a good 10 minute walk to shops and restaurants, in a lovely neighborhood, and on a perfect plot. The house is beautifully decorated, has a great kitchen (high quality pots and pans, great upgrade on the fridge), and the pool is perfect. We have stayed in this house for 6 years, and we will keep coming back. We really, really love this wonderful home.

Another great year.

  • 5 of 5

Our 4th year at this gem of a house. We love everything about it. It has so much charm and such a nice floor plan.

Too bad it rained the first 1/2 of the week...unusual for the beach.

Great Location and Comfortable Home

  • 5 of 5

This was the first time for our family to stay in the Outer Banks. We selected the town of Duck, and it was the perfect choice for us. This house was so close to the beach and we could easily walk back and forth for lunch or the forgotten beach toy. The pool was nice to have on the one windy day we had. Just half a mile down the road we were at Duck Doughnuts and lots of shops! We ate at a different restaurant in Duck (or within 5 miles) every evening and they were all wonderful!

Location location location!

  • 4 of 5

This is a great home that is literally steps to the beach. (Quick and easy to run back from beach to use bathroom or grab a bite to eat.) There is a lifeguard stand directly at the bottom of the steps leading onto the beach. Also nice location wise is that it is a flat and easy 1/2 mile walk from this home to the center of town in Duck, (shopping, boardwalk, restaurants, Duck Donuts!, etc.). We enjoyed walking to town and back multiple times during our stay. It was also a nice quiet neighborhood during our visit.

The pool and hot tub were sparkling clean and clear. They were serviced the morning we arrived and again mid-week. One end of pool has a large seat which is perfect for just sitting in the water and hanging out!

Our guys were pleased to find the property had a decent basketball hoop in the driveway.

Our kids also enjoyed connecting their phones/music to the outdoor speaker system... a nice perk! We LOVED the upstairs loft and desk area and deck... perfect for morning coffee and reading. MANY positives about this place. Especially the owners who were super responsive and very helpful with any questions we had. VERY nice to have keyless entry and not need to go somewhere to pick up keys to get in. It's also decorated in a cute, homey and beach style through out. Beds and pillows were comfortable.

The reason for 4 stars instead of 5 was mainly the bedroom setup: 2 king bed rooms with no ensuite, and 2 queen bed rooms with ensuite. It seems it would be more logical to have the king beds in the rooms with ensuites. (But we did know that ahead of time as per the listing). Also, there was no comfortable place to sit or lounge on the 3 lovely decks as all the lounge chairs and outdoor chairs were a very hard/solid plastic material... not so much an issue for dining chairs and rockers but the loungers were just too uncomfortable to lie on when hanging out and/or tanning by the pool. Grill and backyard picnic table in need of replacement. Seating is a bit limited around main level TV...comfortably seats 4 adults... we had 6. (Awesome lower level with plenty of room for several kids and a much bigger sectional sofa and TV viewing area but our crowd all gravitated toward hanging out on main level).

We had a truly enjoyable visit and hope to be able to return. Would consider this same unit b/c of owners and location!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the note...and we are so glad you had a good time at OBX Box. We'll be sure to take a look at the bed configuration when we're there in the off season. The closets may be different sizes which "forces" the size of beds..but not sure. We are glad you liked the basketball hoop and music hook up (there is one in the living room upstairs also). The music hook up was easy...the hoop was difficult!! We are already planning on a new BBQ grill and also repairs/replacement for the table/bench on that side of the house. See you next year!

This is our second season at this great property so that says it all. Clean, well equipped, and right across the street from the beach. Great pool. We like to walk and it is only 1/2 mile to town.

Highly recommend.
