About Gina Johnson
I was born in the Upper Peninsula, after graduating high school went to the lower Peninsula to continue my education, marry, have my children and live on a fast track for some years. Always I hoped to be back home where I started from. Hence here I am, lucky enough to have raised my children in pristine surroundings, with good air, lots of lakes to play in, trails to walk or climb. I'm a gardener with a passion so you will have lovely grounds to enjoy. When I'm not on me knees in the garden I enjoy cooking, making bird baths or hunting drift wood. Paul and I keep ourselves very busy with our rental interests. We have met some of the most enjoyable people. What a blessing.
Gina Johnson purchased this Cottage in 1984
Why Gina Johnson chose Big Bay
This property was purchased because it was the perfect place to retire, plus there needed to be a home for our Caboose. We have our home on the property also so anything you would need would be taken care of right away.
What makes this Cottage unique
What is more unique then a lovely Caboose. Look out the front door and there is beautiful Lake Independence, go for a stroll in the garden, or just sit there and listen to the water fall. Grill out on your own weber grill, that fish which you might have caught that morning. You can enjoy some of the most wonderful 4 wheeler trails, Hiking, the fall colors are just beautiful!

Loved this place
My girlfriend and I stayed here for a couple of days on a trip exploring northern Michigan.
The location is perfect and there's a really nice park right down the road which has a nice beach and beautiful pine forest, which we unfortunately only realized on the day we were leaving.
We were exploring a lot, driving around so we didn't spend too much time other than at night when we were exhausted from traveling around all day, but we loved everything about this place.
The property is really nice and in an amazing spot.
I think the only thing I would change is to replace the cabinet with the dishes with a love seat or something.
Definitely a unique place and we would definitely stay here again in the future.
Beautiful just out right amazing place will definitely come again
What a wonderful experience all around! The accommodations, the setting, the grounds, the lake....good for the soul. I stayed for a week in mid July, mostly alone but a couple of nights had a teen with me and we both really enjoyed it!
Gina is such a pleasant host with genuine passion and concern for guests' comfort and well being. That being said, she gives you as much space as you want; available and not at all overbearing nor intrusive. Her communication is stellar right from the get-go. From the moment I inquired, throughout my stay right through departure Gina was readily available to email, texts or calls.
The caboose is so clean, well equipped and well kept. What a unique experience! It's a metal box so can get warm but there is air conditioning if needed and lots of windows to open for a cross breeze if cool enough out.
The area is safe, quiet and away from it all but within 30 minute drive to Marquette if needed. It was a tad challenging to find at first but in fairness, it was dark and pouring rain. Best to find out what the driveway looks like beforehand!
Lake Superior is a short walk or drive. Just a few steps out the door is Lake Independence, which is warm and clean and big enough that the little bit of motorboat traffic doesn't interfere with kayaking at all. There are a few kayaks to use, complete with paddles and PFD's - all well cared for just like the caboose and entire property.
Clearly a great deal of thought has gone into this property and accommodation; I hope they are very proud of their offering!
After a week of enjoying sitting by, swimming in and kayaking on the lake, breathing the CLEAN air, bathing in nature and truly feeling well cared for, I departed with renewed spirit ready to re-enter the world.
I would definitely stay again!
Perfectly Peaceful, Charming, Cozy and Fun!!
This property is a treasure! The caboose is cozy yet comfortable- we are tall and slept well in the double bed. The kitchenette is well-equipped, making meal prep easy. The lake is about 50 steps from the caboose, and the proprietors Gina and Paul provided comfortable lounge chairs to relax & enjoy. They also have canoes, kayaks & a BBQ grill available for guests. We were so well taken care of, from the moment we drove up to the property and were welcomed with a friendly wave. The gardens were in full bloom and Gina encouraged us to relax and enjoy in the comfortable garden chairs. She even made us a pie!! And it was SO delicious. We were invited to join Gina and Paul for two boat rides, which was extra special. Seeing the area from the water is incredible, especially the granite cliffs and caves. They gave us information about local hikes and eateries, too. We truly couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Our little dog Miss Pickles was also warmly welcomed by Gina and Paul and their two friendly pups. If you are looking for a unique property, enjoy lakes & hiking, this is it. 5 stars, all around. All VRBOs should be as delightful and welcoming!
We were delighted to have you with us
We are confirmed "caboose crazy"!
We celebrated a significant birthday with the caboose as our home base: we celebrated the local scenery, relished the regional food, and drank in the great hospitality of Paul & Gina! The caboose was comfortable and cozy and carefully appointed to meet all of our needs. We will return! Can't wait!
Clean, charming, and very welcoming owners. Will stay again and recommend to anyone.
Thanks. So glad you were able to have time to kick back and enjoy our beautiful lake. Also you left everything in great shape. Once again thank you
